20 Years Ago: BA Domestic B737-200 (with Pics!)

Thu Apr 06, 2006 1:54 am

Inspired by this report
http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/74862/
I thought by myself "That can I also" Big grin so here's a short report about a
flight STR-TXL on BA back in 1986 - when I was six years old, by the way.
Searching through old-times photo albums, I even found some pics. So here it
goes.

Back in the days of the cold war, German airlines were not allowed to fly
into Berlin, so BA, PA, TW and others were operating those so-called
intra-German shuttle services. This time my parents decided to book us on BA
- and there's no better way to fly than on BA, if you ask me.

Passenger receipt and boarding pass - thanks to my mother for putting them
into the archives:

Stairway to heaven - my father, my brother and I climbing up the rear stairs
of which looks to me like a B737-200. Aaah, the good old Landor-days...

*singing* Soooomewheeere over the GDR...

We landed at TXL after I guess about one hour in the air, maybe a bit
longer, who knows.

Waiting for our baggage to arrive. And waiting. Waiting even longer. So my
brother and I decided to place some of our soft toys on the belt - the other
passengers were not amused:

No pics of the return flight unfortunately (shame on my parents for the lack of
inflight pics Big grin ) so this is the end of my report, hope you enjoyed it.

Regards, Alex.

Nice report - makes a change to see something a bit older!

Fun report, thanks for that journey back in time, Alex!  Smile Maybe, if I get my act together, I'll publish a trip report about an LTU trip on an L1011 I did back in 1991 sometime later thios year - I have both extensive photo coverage of plane and airports and even an old hand-prepared boarding pass stemming from that time.

Hi Alex,

nice report, brings back some memories from the old days. How flying has changed since then...

What a pity that there are no pictures of the meal - I think they were still serving hot meals on domestic flights in those days.

Great report, nice to see how German shuttles were. Weird flying BA on a German domestic flight.

Hi Alex,
funny idea.
I remember my first years of spotting at STR with planes like those in your report.

Same here  Smile , and thanks Alex for the nice idea.... I flew STR-TXL-STR one year later, outbound on PanAm (727-200 "Clipper Endeavor"), return on BA 737-200 G-BGDS... ah, the memories...

Cheers,
Thomas

Thanks for your replies very much!

Well in fact it's not that bad - having had a second look at the photo, I thought "We need a resolution!" (if you know that old song by Aaliyah), so here's the same photo again in a higher-resolution scan, which shows that at least some passengers appeared to be amused:

Now that would be interesting to read and watch! I'm definitely looking forward to it, as I really like those retrospectives about trips that have taken place so many years ago. Even if it might not be as detailed as usual (at least I fail to remember every detail about trips I have done when I was a child) it's certainly much more interesting than reports about recent flights.
Btw, watch out for my Northwest report, including B747-100, DC-10 and -of course- DC-9!

Quoting Contact Air (Reply 5):

Though the meal is one of the details I have forgotten over the years, I'm sure that it was usually much more and higher-quality than what you get today. The times, they're changing..

Quoting BA747YYZ (Reply 6):
Weird flying BA on a German domestic flight.

It is, but it was kind of normal back then. When BA was no longer allowed to fly domestic flights from TXL, they simply founded Deutsche BA, which is today knows as DBA.

Thanks for your reply. By the way, do you also remember the old Terminal 3? I found an old photo of it, well actually the photo is not that old, it was taken in 2000, a few days before they closed the terminal. Those seats look so 1970ish Big grin

I can only repeat myself: Those were the days, my friend! And it's a pity I didn't write down the registrations back then  Sad

Hi Alex,
great pic.
I remember a sub-charter for LTU operated by an Aviaco DC-9 to PMI, the gate was in that oldfashioned T3 area.
