Hi there, welcome to this very detailed trip report.
It will contain 8 flights on 6 different aircrafts, three different airlines and even one aborted take-off.
It will lead us from Germany to London to San Francisco and finally to Hawaii were I also did some flights between the islands and back again. Airlines were LH
for the intra european flights, UA
for the intercontinental and Hawaii flights and Aloha Airlines/Island Air for the flights within Hawaii.
It was done for vacation and I did this trip with my mum who gave me this trip for my eighteenth birthday.
Lets get started…
Registration: D-ABEK (football-nose)
This flight departet HAM
at 8:45 in the morning so we had to get up at 5:15, we took a taxi to the airport and once we entered the terminal I was shocked to see, that there was a huge line in font of the Lufthansa Check in Counters. We joined the crowd and to my relieve, the ticket agents worked efficient and many travelers were families who went to one check in desk with 7 or so people, therefore we were waved to a hispanic looking lady quite fast.
After she entered our name in the computer I told her that we had reserved seats for the LHR
flight and I also asked her if it is possible to get a window seat for the flight to LHR
. She confirmed that we have our reserved window seats for the two UA
flights but she apologized that there are no window seats left on the 737
We got our passports and miles and more cards back and made our way towards security were many people were waiting. I just went through without beeping and so did my mum, that saved a couple of minutes which I could use in order to get a glimpse at the parked airplanes. Once I looked out of the window I realized why there were so many passengers for LH
, there were two A300-600 bound for FRA
, which departed like 10 minutes apart, so nearly 500 passengers had to get checked in for those flights assuming they were full.
We had to go through passport contol again since this was a flight going to the UK and once we got through this procedure, we were finaly at our gate, there were three 737´s waiting, one for CDG
, one for CPH
and our flight to LHR
which was the only plane with a soccer-nose
Boarding started 20 minutes before the planned departure and looking at the amount of people waiting at the gate, the flight seemed to be 100% full.
Passengers were greeted by a very young F/A who seemed to be a little nervous, maybe she was new in the business, nevertheless she smiled and that is something I do not always get on LH
flights. I took my seat and since I was not seated at the window, I left my camera in the backpack, but no worries, there will be plenty of pictures for the other flights
Pushback was on time and we made our short taxi to runway 33 were we were given immediate take off clearance and with no time to waste we started accelerting and soon we took of into the cloudy sky.
Once the seatbelt sign was switched off, the F/A´s sprang into action and prepared the meal and drink service. By the way, this 737 did not have the old Y-seats but also not yet those new seats which made their round through the discussion forums quite recently, they were still grey, looked quite modern and hurt my long legs… I liked their old seats better and I hope the new seats are different from those I had on this flight.
Soon, the drink and meal service began, we had the choice between a cheese or ham sandwich, I opted for cheese which I got with a coke.
The sandwich was OK
, it was not very big but it tasted fresh and it had lots of cheese.
After the trash was collected, I settled back and read my book, since I was not able to look out of the window. After 30 more minutes we started our descent which was quite bumpy due to clouds over england. The F/A´s came around and checked if everyone had put on the seatbelt and soon we were on approach into Heathrow. We came down really fast and the ground came narer and nearer alarmingly fast, and just when I thought we would smash this plane into the ground, the pilot pulled up and we made an extremly smooth landing… I was really impressed since I never experienced such a landing.
We exited the runway and made our way towards the terminal, were we arrived ten minutes ahead of schadual.
We deplaned and made our way towards th bus which would bring us to the terminla were our flight to SFO
Conclusion: It was a nice flight with quite nice F/A´s, they were friendly and professional but still a little roboticm the food was OK
, and the best part was the landing 7out of 10 for this flight.
After the bus dropped us off, we had to go through security again which took a little longer since there were so many flights going to the U.S.
After we were checked we made our way towards our terminal were boarding had just started when we arrived. Our bags were checked once again and then we made our way to the mighty 777.
Airline: United Airlines
We were greeted by two F/A´s who also checked the boarding passes in order to tell the passengers which aisle they´ll have to use to get to their seat.
My seat today was 33A and my mum had 33B, I found this great about UA
´s 2-5-2 seating, I know it can be a pain in the butt but if you travel with relative or friend, it is just great if nobody sits next to you for the next 11 hours.

We had to wait until this beauty cleared the way in order to start taxiing
I plugged in my headphones and listened to channel nine, it is always nice listening to all those airlines from all over the world. After a few minutes we requestes push-back clearance but had to wair for a Cathay Pacific 747 taxiing behind us. When we got permission, the F/A´s also started their safety demo, something I don´t pay attention to anymore because I see it like 25 times a year.

The runway was not far and taxiing could have been over after 5 minutes but it took 25 due to the take-off line in front of us.

We were number 8 for take off and behind us were 9 more aircraft.
When the BA
747 before us finaly took uf we got permission to line up and soon after that we were cleared for take-off. We started accelerating and I really had the impression that the 777 has a lot more take off power than the for engine jets sucha s the 747 or A340-600.
Anyway, we airborned quite soon and I saw the terminals of LHR
and even the retired Concorde. We banged to the right and ATC gave us clearance for FL
210 which war extended to FL
360 later. We climbed through heavy clouds which caused moderate turbulence, but nothing the 777 couldn’t handle.

We leveled out and the seatbelt sign was switched off, I looked out of the window and listened to Channel 9 for at leat one more hour, it was just so fascinating
The first round of drinks was served and of course the well known announcement was made “due to federal aviation law, it is prohibited to open or consume any alcoholic beverages not served by a flight attendant”. Since I only wanted a Pepsi I did not really care and one nice thing about United is that you actually get a whole can, not just a cup. After the trash was collected the first movies started and I watched Harry Potter since I did not see that one yet. I got really bored after half an hour and was glad when lunch was announced. We got hot towels and soon the service started, the choice was chicken or pasta, I had the chicken which looked like this.
It was served with potatoes topped with cheese, vegetables, two buns with cheese, crackers and ice cream for desert. It was quite good and the Ice cream was a nice change to the usual cake.
After the meal was finished and the trash was collected I made my way to the back of the plane, because I wanted to stretch my legs a little bit ( The movie was just too boring). When I looked out of the window at the last door, I noticed that we could see our own condensation trail, something I always love to photograph.
After a few minutes of stretching I returned to my seat in order to watch another movie (walk the line) which was a lot better, I watched for the whole two hours switching to the moving map from time to time. Soon after the movie finished the lights were dimmed and most of the passengers dosed of including me…
I usually don´t sleep on flights but I guess the early wake up exhausted me a little bit, so I slept for three hours straight. When I woke up we already left Greenland behind us and were near the canadian border.
By now we cruised at FL
. 380 and when we entered the canadian airspace, we had a nice view at the scenery below.
I watched yet another movie (Mr. And Mrs. Smith) which got me entertaine for the next 2 hours. By the time the movie finished I went to the back again in order to use the lavatory and to stretch my legs once again. When I settled back into my seat, I listened to channel 9 and witnessed a very interesting conversation, it was like this:
ATC: You are cleared for FL
600, you have enough space for your exercise up there
Flight XXX.: Thank you, proceeding from FL
450 to FL
I was astonished, why would you want to go that high, does anybody have a thought? Maybe it was a military flight…
Anyway, after one more hour we passed seatle and made our way down the west coast to San Francisco, and now Chanel 9 started to get interesting again, many airlines tuned in either going in or out california. It was nice to hear the LH
747 heading to FRA
since I took this flight a couple of times.
The cabin crew came around and distributed the forms passengers who are not S citizens have to fill out. After that the snackbox was given out which consisted a sandwich, a twix chocolate bar and a bag of chips/crisps.
The sandwich was quite tasty and by the time I finished it we started our descend into SFO
The weather was cloudy and therefore the descxend was quite bumpy, when we overflew San Francisco we had a nice view over this great city and actually saw some parts of the Golden Gate Bridge poking out of the clouds.

We got landing clearence for 28 left I think and while getting lower and lower the crosswind seemed to become more and more, the plane was shaking and when we were over the runway I saw that it was one of those crosswind landings, since I was able to see nearly to the end of the runway due the landing procedure.

We touched down with a little thud but it was still smooth. We exited the runway and made our way to the terminal, were we arrived like seven minutes later.
When we disembarked the whole crew thanked us for flying United.
Conclusion: The flight was good, the cabin was clean but the IFE was not up to date, the screens are smaller than in other aircraft of other airlines but for me service counts more than IFE and that was very good, the F/A´s were very nice and quick with collecting the trash, some just did their job and did not smile much, but most were really nice.
Channel 9 was great and once again I was pleased with United´s service on this flight.
I give this flight 8 out of 10.
We went to emigration which was done very quickly, something I love about SFO
, no matter how full it is, I never wait longer zhan 20 minutes. This times it was just 5 minutes and after we got our passports back, we collected our bags and brought them to a belt which was located between the international and the domestic terminal were some airport employees checked the destination and heaved them onto the belt. After that was done we had to go through security and after that we had 1 hour to kill.
I phoned my girlfriend, looked at some aircraft and went to the gate in order to check the registration of our next plane.
Airline: United Airlines
When boarding was called we lined up and soon we were in the jetbridge. A male F/A greeted us at the door and after waiting behind a very huge guy who tried to heave his back into the overhead-bin in slow motion, I settled down into my seat. I had a nice view just behind the wing and while I was not too tired I took some pictures.
After everyone was seated the doors were closed and I heard our captain request push back clearance, which was granted right away. A nice surprise was when a UA
777 requested taxi clearance and the ATC told the captain that they hould follow us to the runway. We therefore accelerated since the 777 was a little ahead of us and when we passed the big guy, I noticed that it was exactly the 777 which brought me from LHR

We lined up and take off power was applied right away, we rocketed down the runway and airborned very soon. We flew through some clouds and after we were above those I could just see a little bit of San Francisco.
We made a left turn and soon there was nothing but water below us.
We were given clearance for FL
360 and after the seatbelt sign was switched off, the F/A´s came around with some pretzels and drinks.
I choosed a pepsi in order to stay awake and while drinking I watched a bit of the movie (Harry Potter again L)
Soon the F/A´s came around again and the passengers had the opportunity to buy some food.
Since I was not hungry I did not buy any and after the trash was collected I dosed of. When I woke up, we were at FL
110 and the very last rays of sun were visible just at the end of the horizon.
After 10 more minutes we were in contact with Maui tower which gave us landing clearance behind a landing Delta 767.
I did not see much since it was dark and while approaching I noticed that we fought moderate winds.
Final approach was therefore quite bumpy but the pilots still managed a very smooth landing.
When we disembarked, the F/A´s said foodbye again and soon we made our way towards the baggage claim area.
Conclusion: This flight was nice again, but I found it strange that we had to buy our food in a flight which is over 5 hours. In Germany you get free food at charter airlines even if the flight is only 2 and a half hours long!!!
The F/A´s were very nice and one thing was very funny, it was a game called “halfway to hawaii” were every passenger had to guess at what time we would have travelled exactly 50% of the route. The closest guess would earn a price. I thought this is a nice touch.
Anyway, I give this flight 7 out of 10.
We got our luggage quite fast and 5 days on this great island lay before us which were just great.
Hawaii is such a great place, and I really liked Maui and therefore I was a little sad after 5 days that we had to fly away, but since it would be to another island I was also very excited J
Airline: Aloha Airlines
Route: Maui-Kauai via Honolulu
I was very excited about the fact that we would fly with a 737-200 since it is very rare nowadys. Check in was withou complications and after doing some shopping we headed towards the gate and soon boarding started.
We were greeted by a female F/A and since it was free seating we choosed two seats in front of the wing. After everyone was in, I noticed that the flight was maybe 60% full and thankfully the seat next to us was left free.
We pushed back on time and our engines were started. We taxied to the runway and when we started accelerating I noticed tht the take off power on the 737-200 is vey weak. Maybe the pilot just did not apply full power but I certainly was not pushed into my seat which is usually the case.
We still managed to airborne and after leavin this great Island behind we made our way towards Honolulu.
We passed some islands during this flight and when the pilot came on she said that we leveled out at our cruising altitude of 10.000 feet!!!
Wow, I never flew this low an entire flight but it was great, since this would mean that we would have a great view over the other islands. The F/A´s came around with some drinks and after the trash was collected we started our descend into Honolulu.
While getting lower the scenery was just stunning and shortly before landing when we were still over water I actually saw a whale!!! Seconds after that we flew over land and a few seconds after that we touched down gently in Honolulu.
After we exited the runway we made our way to the terminal and the passengers who were booked for Honolulu left the plane. The passengers ongoing to Kona stayed in the plane even when it got refueled. After 10 minutes new passengers arrived and after 20 minutes we pushed back again.
We made our way to the runway were we had to wait for a landing Hawaiian 767.
We lined up and once again this weak take off power was applied. After take off we had a nice view over the airport before bangin keft for the flight to Kona.
This time we passed yet another island at an altitude of 10.000 feet and after drinking a second drink we started our descend again, it was a very ahort flight. A tape played over the speakers, explaining the island of Kona which I thought was a very nice idea.
Approach into Kona was bumpy due to cross winds and this time the landing was harder, we touched down with quite a thud and after making contact with the pavement, we braked really hard.
We made our way towards the terminal and when I left the plane I was sure that this was one of the best flights I ever had, sure the service was nothin to write home about but the scenery was just awesome, I never saw anything like it on any of my flights and I hope the pics can show a little of the beautness.
I just have to give this flight 10 out of 10
Our bags were already waiting for us and we were told that they were just send with an earlier flight from Maui. That saved us time and soon we were on our way towards our Hotel.
After we spend five great days in Kauai, it was time for us to fly to Big Island via Maui.
We arrived at the airport and when we stood at the Aloha Airlines counter, we were told that this flight would be operated by Island Air and therefore we would have to go to their counter.
We walked over their and saw that the counter was still closed. It say it would open at 9 a.m. what would be in 10 minutes, so no problem. When the counter openend, we were the first to check in and soon we were given our boarding passes.
We strolled around the airport and since it was free seating on this plane, I insisted to be at the gate at least ten minutes prior to boarding in order to get a window seat.
Airline: Aloha Airlines (operated by Island Air)

Route: Kauai-Big Island via Maui
When it was time for boarding we had to walk down some steps and then we stepped out onto the airfield. I took some photos and after that I was one of the first to enter the tiny aircraft .
I settled down in a window seat. The window was dirty and had lots of scratches and the rest of the cabin did not look very appealing either, everything was worn out, the ceiling was dirty, the carpet was dirty, the overhead bins were dirty or broken.
Soon the propellers were started and with a loud Roar we started moving.
We were given immediate take off clearance and soon we took of into a sky full of turbulence.
After we leveled out at 10.000 feet the same drinks were given out as on the Aloha 737 flight, some sort of juice or water. There was just one F/A on this flight but he was very friendly.
On this flight we were not able to have this great view over the other island due to low hanging clouds and every here and then we hit quite heavy turbulence.
After 30 minutes we started our descend and after a wild ride in the clouds we were on finals for Maui airport.
The gear was lowered and the flaps retracted, we were swingin from the left to the right, flaired over the runway and then touched down quite smoothly given the circumstances.
We taxied to the terminal were passengers would deplane and others would board.
After 15 minutes that was done and were again ready to go. The propeller was started and we made our way to the runway. We taxied onto the runway and waited for like 30 seconds…
Then the propeller sped up but we never accelerated fot take off, we just taxied on the runway and everyone was wondering what was going on. Suddenly the pilot came on and said that they had smoke in the cockpit and therefore could not continue the journey now, we would head back to the terminal and a group of technicians would observe the damage.
So we taxied back and when we came to a stop, everyone left the airplane and once I was outside I took this opportunity to get some photos.
We then went back into the terminal were we had to wait… noone told us anything so we had no clue weither there is enough time to buy a coffee let alone when we would continue our flight.
After 25 minutes however we were told back onto the airfield for boarding, everyone took their seat and soon we were on our way to the runway again.
We took of without incident this time and after 10 minutes of flying time we started our descend.
The pilot apologized for the delay during th edescend but everyone in the cabin did not really mind, since they were all making holidays and therefore 45 minutes delay do not hurt really much.
We entered the clouds yet again and soon gear and flaps were lowered.
We flaired over the runway and suddenly we just dropped onto the pavement and several overheadbins flew open (mostly the broken ones). After this hard landing we were on the way to the terminal were we deplaned after saying goodbye to the crew.
Conclusion: The plane was in a bad condition, everything looked worn, it was dirty from the inside, the seatpitch was not the best and I felt very cramped.
On the other hand, the F/A was really nice and he tried his best for our comforts.
The aborted take off was nice for me since I never experienced that before and it gave me the opportunity to spot some more planes.
The nonexisting information when we were waiting in the terminal was not nice…

After we collected our luggage, we made our way to the alamo rental car station and the last four days of this great holiday laied before us.
After those four days which were just great it was time to head beack home and so we drove to the airport, gave our car back and soon we were inside the terminal.
The line in front of the United counters were long but since we reserved our seats I did not expect any problems.
When it was our turn we gave our tickets to the lady and I told her that we had reserved seats.
She nodded and soon the machine spat out two boarding passes with the seatnumber 32 J and 32 H. I looked at them and wondered how a 757 could have 32 rows. It occurred to me that there must have been an equipment upgrade from a 757 to a 767 and I was really happy about that since my last 767 flight was several years ago.

Route: Big Island-San Francisco
We made our way through security and boarding started right away.
We had to walk to our plane and if you board from the ground, the plane looks a lot bigger.
Once inside, we were greeted by two F/A´s who smiled and soon I was seated comfortable in my seat.
I pluged in the headphones and sure enough, channel 9 was available J
We had to wait for 15 more minutes for boarding passengers and then the doors were closed.
I listened to our pilot requesting taxi clearance which was granted right away. We pushed back, started our engines and soon we were on our way.
We requested take off clearance and when that was given we lined up on the runway. We actually waited some seconds even though we had tke off clearance but soon the engines spooled up and we began our rather long take off roll.
Once we airborned we banged to the right due to traffic to our left and climbed to FL
250 and after that to FL
I looked out of the window for a long time until drinks were served, they came with a bag of pretzels and shortly after that the meal service started.
Since we did not eat any breakfast, we took a salad for my mum, two wraps for me and a box containing tuna, crackers, Toblerone, chips, cheese and raisins.
All in all we spent 15 bucks which was not all too bad since the meals were quite large.
After we finished I felt so full that I had to stretch my legs, so I went to the back of the cabin.
I stood their for like 45 minutes and chatted to a couple from california who were both pilots for UA
, he flew the 777 and she was liscensed for the 757/767 family.
After that I went back to my seat and soon the sun started to set, providing a nice view.
I read for a long time and soon it was pitch black outside and we only had one hour to go.
I listened to channel nine were all the traffic in- and outbound from/to SFO
We were given clearance for FL
210 and soon the seatbelt sign was switched on.
We hit some turbulence during the descend but nothing special, soon we were on FL210 were wecruised for some minutes before descending further to FL
Suddenly we overflew San Francisco and soon we were established for a 28L landing.
The flaps came out and soon I felt the gear going down. We made some last second corrections and landed smoothly.
We vacated the runway and made our way towards the gate.

A343 and wondered were it came from because I thought they fly with 747 from FRA
or A340-600 from MUC
, but maybe this changes during the winter.
We arrived at our gate but before leaving I was allowed to make a shot of the cockpit, it is dark but you can still see something.
We then headed to the baggage claim area and after that we took the shuttle to our hotel in order to get some rest before continuing our journey to the old continent.
Conclusion: Uneventfull flight with good service. It is sad that one has to buy mels on such a long flight but the meals were at least good.
The equipment upgrade was great and the visit in the cockpit was nice.

The next day we took a shuttle to the airport which dropped us off at the international terminal.
We headed to the check in counters which were deserted, a fact I was veray happy about. It took two minutes before we were waved to a mexican check in agent who yet again confirmed our reservtions. The mashine spat out our boarding passed and we went to security, which was a breeze.
I walked around the terminal and looked out of the windows, Sfo is just great for watching planes.

After killing one hour by spotting and eating it was time for boarding which started on time.
Airline: United Airlines
We entered the plane and were again greeted by two F/A´s.
I settled down in my seat and looked out of the window.
Boarding was completed soon and the door was closed. I tried to listen to channel 9 but it was switched off L
We pushed back on time and then made a very slow taxi to the runway.
We saw some planes during taxiing and when we ariived at our asigned runway (28L) we had to wait for a landing UA
After that we lined up and our engines spooled up. We accelerated down the runway and just a few seconds after take-off we banged hard to the right which gave me a nice view over San Francisco.
We were given a pretty low altitude at first which continued until we left Oakland, therefore I was able to take some pictures of that too.
After 20 minutes we already had the first snow below us and sure enough some minutes later everything was covered in snow.
The first movies and beverages service started, I choosed to watch Mr. And MRS
. Smith again since I was really in the mood for that one. I ordered a Pepsi which came along with some pretzels and after the trash was colected I switched between the movie and the airmap in order to know how fast we are and were we are. Flight time on this flight was calculated with 9 hours 50 minutes which seemed pretty short for me.
Occasionaly we had 150 mp/h tailwind and therefore we were really fast.
Soon the first meal service started and the choice was beef or chicken, I opted for the beef which came with roast potatoes, spinach, ome salad with vinegar, grapes, crackers and a chocolate cake as a desert.
It tasted really good and I washed it down with another Pepsi (everyone got a whole can again).
After that was finished the trays were collected and I reclined my seat after asking the person sitting behind me.
I looked out of the window and was treated with a nice view over northern Canada and soon the sun started to set.
When it was dark, I tried to get some sleep but after dosing for about 30 minutes we hit moderate turbulence and the rush of the people returning to their seats woke me up.
I watched some cartoons and listened to some music before climbing over my sleeping mum in order to stretch my legs and maybe get some sweets at the back of the plane. I was not disappointed, such as on every United flight there was a big basket in the kitchen which contained sweet, crackers and cheese, one was alos allowed to take as many drinks they wanted, something I find really great. I used the lavatory and chatted with some people which took over one hour. When I returned to my seat we were near Greenland already and only 5 hours left until planned arrival in LHR
I settled back into my seat and watched some documentary about snakes in africa which was quite interesting and too 45 more minutes.
The F/A´s came around every 30 minutes with water and sometimes with coffe or tea.
After passing Iceland the sun started to rise in the distance and I was thrilled by the great sunrise that followed.
After the sun was almost fully risen we had two hours left and the cabin lights were switched on and the smell of breakfast filled the cabin.
Breakfast was a croissant stuffed with egg, ham and cheese and it tasted really good for my taste, since I love melted cheese and ham.
While I chomped on the croissant I still looked out of the window in order to watch the gorgeous sunrise.
When the trash was collected we had 40 minutes left and soon we started our descend into LHR
Due to the cloud layer it was a bumpy approach but nothing special happened.
Once we broke through the clouds, we had only 2 minutes left until landing and while getting lower I saw a nice looking castle and soon we were flairing over the runway.
We made an incredible smooth landing and the made a slow taxi to the gate.
We pulled into the gate next to an AA
777 and soon the engines were turned of and the jetbridge was connected. We left the aircraft and made our way towards the connection terminal.
Conclusion: The crew was very nice on this flight and the food was good. I liked the fact that the passengers are able to grab sancks and drinks by themselfes if they want to. The IFE was good but a little outdated. All in all I was pleased with United throughout the whole trip because I really noticed that they tried their best.
I give this flight 9 out of ten.
Now we had to go to the terminal were LH
departs and now everything went wrong.
is the worst airport in terms of organization I have ever been to, there was a huge line all the way to the bus which would bring us to the terminal and it took 45 minutes just to get on the bus!!! Then we had to wait another 45 minutes in another line and then 10 minutes at security. We waited 90 minutes just to get to our connection terminal, I never thought that this could occur at a major airport. I have been to many airports and sometimes I had to get to another terminal during the peak hours were hundreds of people were going in and out but it never took that much time.
I was really disappointed with LHR
I will make this one short sine I did not take any shots, we were greeted by a nice F/A, pushed back on time and also did not have to wait long for take off.
During the flight we got a sandwhich which I did not take since I was not hungry at all.
The plane was equipped with the same seats as the the one from the HAM
flight had, and therefore my knees hurt a lot.
The service was good but I dosed off quite often.
Landing in HAM
was very smooth and we arrived 10 minutes ahead of the planned arrical time.
