MUC-BRU-MUC On SN

Hi guys,
This is my first TR. It doesn´t include any pictures, yet I hope you enjoy reading it.

Friday 14th April

As our flight departed early in the morning, we had to wake up at 4 AM and leave at 4:30 AM. Although I hadn´t slept all night because I was excited about the flight, I wasn´t tired.

The 100 km drive from my home to MUC took an hour and we left our car at the holiday/long-term parking lot and hopped on the shuttle bus to terminal 1. As the bus didn´t exactly stop at section D, we had to walk 10 minutes to get to the check-in hall.

The 2 SN counters were empty and as we had only 1 piece of luggage, check-in was a breeze.
The same goes for security: Put my jacket and my backpack into a box for x-ray, stepped through the metal detector and that was it.

As boarding time came closer, the waiting area at the gate started to fill up.

Departure: 7:05 AM
Arrival: 8:35 AM
Aircraft: BAe Avro RJ85
Load: 95-100 %
Seat: 11F

A bus took us to one of the famous midfield gates at MUC: You enter a small building, go up an escalator and board the aircraft through a normal jetbridge.

I entered the cute Avro and settled down at my window seat. The seat covers were very worn and desperately needed replacement. Pitch was OK, however seat width was good as this aircraft was 5-abreast.

Announcements were made in Dutch, French and German, some also in English. Safety instuctions were English only.

Soon the door was closed and a long taxi to the northern runway followed. The take-off roll was short and the climb a bit less steep than I had expected.

In no time we were above the clouds and "meal" service started. A snack box was handed out, consisting of the following: A roll looking like a croissant but tasting like a sweetened soft American roll, some jam, a small muffin, a MICRO fruit juice (50 mililiters !) and refreshment towel as well as milk and sugar for coffee/tea.
Drink service was coffee, tea, water or juice. I opted for an orange juice. There was one refill, but only for tea or coffee ! Shame on SN !  Wow! Small (Belgian ?) chocolates were handed out as well.

Rubbish was collected and the remaining cruise was smooth.
All too soon we started the descent into BRU. Deploying the flaps was quite noisy and some pax were scared of that noise !
From my window I could see the mechanism driving the fascinating flap system of the Avro. If there hadn´t been a window, I could have easily thouched the flaps.

We touched down, quickly exited the runway and were already at our gate, right next to a parked DAS Air Cargo DC-10. Immediately our aircraft was fueled for the next flight.

As I had left the aircraft, I looked back into the jetbridge which had windows and saw a man photographing, the DC-10 I guess. Maybe an a.netter ?  Smile

The A-gates at BRU are very modern, but the walk to the baggage claim was quite long, yet we had to wait sometime for the luggage to arrive.

We then went to the train station and took an "Express" train to Bruxelles-Midi.




Monday 17th April

Again we took the train to arrive at BRU.

This time check-in took a while. We went straight to the departure area. A check of passports and boarding cards followed. Where is security ? I asked myself. Should BRU really be a dream for both pax and terrorists ?

We walked back the long way that we already knew. But then security came. I went through the metal detector and beep, off it went. The security guy said: "We´ll do a search with you" and it was done quite properly. My parents could hardly prevent laughing. I wanted to ask the guy how they could even consider a 15-year old boy a terrorist, but then I thought I´d better shut up.  Wink

We bought some Belgian chocolate and went to our gate. As we still had much time and as I was hungry, I looked for some food. I ended up with 2 hotdogs for 2,45 € each, but they were ridiculously small. Next time when I´ll be at BRU, I´ll look for another place to eat.  Embarrassment

I then wandered around in the terminal and watched countless SN Avros landing, taking off or simply sitting at a gate. I walked to the deserted end of the terminal where there was a good view on the runways. Another man came and looked at aircraft, too. Maybe another a.netter ?

The thunder of a DAS Air Cargo DC-10 which was taking off could be heard in the whole building.

As I walked back a 763 took off, maybe an AT example ? Boarding was in process at a Vueling A320. As it was full, it took endless. Several times the cargo door was opened again and luggage of delayed pax was loaded. The last pax ran into the aircraft, but the gate agent also going to the aircraft was in no hurry. Finally the aircraft was "pushed" back at one main gear. I created a topic about this in Tech/Ops.

Boarding was quick. This time, the seats were in a better condition and the pitch was ample. Together with the 5-abreast this could have made me enjoying the flight even more, but the seat itself somehow was less comfy than the one on the way to BRU. Soon we took off. Once above the clouds, the flight was smooth. Again, snack boxes were distributed, consisting of the following: Small piece of cake filled with cherries, milk and sugar, refreshment towel and a cup of mineral water. Drink service was the same as on the MUC-BRU sector, again no refill for juice. The small chocolates were passed out, too.

After the meal, it was time to visit the toilet. It was occupied, but the friendly FA told me I could sit down in the first ro which was empty. Once inside, it was hardly possible to stand upright. I´m 6 ft 1 in/1,82 m tall. Additionally, I thought the lav must have been designed by a woman. An advice to all men taller than 6 feet: Sit down !

Soon the descent into MUC was started. I could see the airport about 8 minutes before landing, but we made a large circle to allign with the runway.
Landing was smooth and the sun was shining. Once at the gate, impatient pax stood up before allownace was given, just like on almost every flight.

From the gate to the baggage claim it was only a short walk. I grabbed a MUC timetable and we got our luggage, went to the bus and we were on our way home.

Interesting report, especially because I'll fly BRU-MUC on SN next week.

What they serve is not really bad - at least they offer a refill for coffee and tea. Not very common in these days.

Good to hear, LH Cityline has six abreast.

Good to hear, LH Cityline has six abreast.

Yes. I should have added that I liked the armrests between the seats. They were wider than those on the outer side of the seat, not like the normal ones which always have the same width, whether they may be between seats or not.
