Iberia ACE-MAD-GVA-MAD-ACE

Sun May 07, 2006 1:41 am

Hi all
First time writing a trip report so bear with me.

Recently flew Iberia Lanzarote to Geneva and back to visit the
EBACE show, have noted the good and bad bits...

Checked in at ACE, 2, 1/2 hours before the flight, no problems.
Got through booked for both flights.
Requested and got a window seat, but found it was row 10
on a A321 so next to the door...

IB840 started boarding 1445, due out 1500. Normal mad
rush to get on...5 staff at the door checking tickets!

Having got on, plane (EC-HUI) clean, bit tatty otherwise ok.
As already said sat next to the door, but at no point was
I asked if I was happy to assist in an emergency..

Service on the way to Madrid consisted of a sales trolley.
2.50 euro for a can of coke. Plane full.

On approach to MAD connecting gate numbers given out over the PA
for the applicable passingers onboard. Nice touch.

Having changed to T4S at MAD, then flew on to Geneva on EC-EYY
MD87, nice and clean, very full. Again sales trolley, Expected a free
drink on this flight at least...

Arrived early into GVA..

Returning Friday 05th May, flight due to depart at 0830, check in finaly
opened at 0640..Anyway once open, booked straight through again without problem.
Boarded at 0800 and departed at 0832, arrived early in MAD. Again a Sales trolley, flight about 80% full. Connecting flight info again given out, but not mine.
At MAD drected to M gates in T4S, gate not showing at that stage, perhaps this is why it was not given on the plane!
Finally got on a bus 1210 for a ride to a remote ramp, not sure why when so many gates where empty on the new terminal....
IB840 taxied at 1240, then waited for 30 minutes for its turn to depart off
36L, why we did not go off 36R when parked next to it I don't know...
EC-IGK A321 very tatty and dirty inside, service again a sales trolley.
Cabin crew all then headed to the back with food trays from First class
to eat!!! Not seen again until we started decending...

All in all ok, but nothing special to write home about, perfer flying Air Europa
I think.

Not one of the 4 flights had the inflight TV screens working, not even with a map on them!!! All planes where fitted mind so why?

cheers

In-flight entertainment is not offered anymore on Iberia's short-haul and European flights. It's one of Iberia's cost-cutting measures: it's expensive to have this In-flight entertainment well maintained and working properly on every plane. Costs are saved as well by not producing/buying documentaries and/or short movies.

The new short-haul Iberia planes won't be fitted anymore with fold down LCD screens.

Video screens are not even used to show the safety procedures. They are now shown manually...

And of course...according to what was announced last year, the new IB short/medium haul aircraft are not fitted with video screens anymore.

The first one of those new aircraft has just been delivered. It's an A321 (EC-JQZ) and 1 more A321 and 4 A319s will arrive during this year.

These new aircraft feature the new interiors (grey leather seats & new carpets) IB has chosen for all their short/medium haul fleet, and the current A319/320/321 fleet will be retrofitted during 2006 and 2007.

I hope that now that Angel Mullor is gone things will get better inside IB...although Fernando Conte is still there...trying to sell whatever he can in order to post good economic results at the end of the year thus making the most out of his shares on the airline. According to the press, his shares gave him more than €80,000 last year thanks to the "good" results obtained by IB after selling the company's shares in Amadeus.

Which European Airlines still offer free food/drinks during the flight then? Seems to be getting less and less.
Would not want to fly Iberia to Moscow or simalar then with no tv's
working, would need a good book I guess!

cheers

Even numerous LCCs (e.g. Air Berlin, Condor, HLX) do have and operate IFE, so it's interesting that the "legacy carriers" claim they can't afford it.

Most large "legacy carriers" do so, and even some LCCs. It's a shame that Iberia as a full member of oneWorld has moved to such a level. They haven't had a competitive longhaul product, now they have also dumped their European product (which I once considered as very competitive). What's next?

Hi all

what a pity that an airline with a potential as IB are showing the MD´s
(for example)in a terrible state
I hope sincerelly that things be changing for better.
