This is my first post so a bit of leeway guys!
Travelling on Business to NY with a colleague (he a BA
Gold member - me a puny Blue), for a few days, we opted for BA
against my usual VS
as he has Gold status.
60J Top Deck.
Drove to LHR
from Elstree in Herts via the Magic Roundabout and got to T4
in 40 mins in peak time which is a personal best. Arrived 2 1/2 hrs before and got one of those guys who meet you there and disappear with you car for a few days! £30 for 4 days is brilliant.
Checked in at BA
First desk as my mate's gold card helps although both WT
lines were deserted. Must be quiet in T4
on a Thursday 6pm.
Check in took 3 mins and through security in 2 mins (thanks to fast track). Wondering why we checked in so early.
A bit of shopping and off to the lounge complex at Gate 10. Went to the FIRST lounge (gold card again). However anyone flying CW
can use it - so why use Terraces?? On entering we asked about kosher food in the lounge and a wonderful lady appeared with Smoked Turkey Bagels from the Concorde Lounge and we washed it down with a bit of Blue Label!
Flight was called but no separate boarding for CW
or First???. Upon enquiring, apparantly if there are less than 200 pax, they dont do priority boarding. We had 179 pax so there wasnt any. First time I heard that but then again first time I flew a 744 half empty.
Top deck CW
is the best for quiet so we booked that at the start. With 62k and 64k taken, I opted for 60J. I am not sold on the CW
layout - climbing over and being climbed over (not on VS
) doesnt do it for me. So 60J has neither and as there are only 20 pax up there and one toilet at back, front one serves only 10 people so hardly any traffic.
We are kosher and the CW
meal was superb. Not the usual stogy food, but lamb, sandwiches before landing were served on china with metal cutlery and very impressive.
Push back on the minute and landing 45 mins early did it for me with BA
's exemplery service.
They did lose one of our bages - an outsize containing an exhibition poster but with delivery to where we were staying within 12 hrs, you cant fault it.
No top deck of course so into the climbing over routine and the rear facing but at least a window! Check in again a breeze in FIRST and no one - thats absolutely NOBODY in security queue - just 4 bored TSA
staff. So in lounge 7 mins after arriving in airport (how did we do that.....)
BA114 suffering a 2 hr delay looked pretty bleak in the terminal so went to FIRST lounge. Claustrophobic so went into the airy and great Terraces. Kosher pre flight supper on offer but US kosher leaves a lot to be desired so we ate before at one of Brooklyn's 300 or so Kosher joints.
On board CW
was full and the 8 accross is pretty tight. I am sure the middle of the 4 on a 777 isnt anywhere near VS
which has windows and aisles on almost every seat. Here you have neither!
But with mine, a window I got 5 hrs sleep but did the climbing thing over Mr Sleep who didnt budge the whole flight.
Great kosher 'nightcap' of hotdog and salad - fantastic and I take back what I said earlier. Breakfast a bit mean - fruit and bagel. Would have expected something hot (other pax also didnt get anything hot).
Took off and landed dead on time, no bags lost so great.
Would do BA CW
again but only on Upper Deck. If not VS
, but not on the poor A340-300.
All in all CW
is worth it but would never take middle of the 4 on 777. Even WT
+ is better than that!
