This is my trip report for ORD
with United on May, 13, 2006.
We proceed from BIQ (our hometown airport in France) to CDG
on May 12 with AF
. I will also maybe post a trip report for this leg. Anyway, I’m here to report for our flight to Anchorage: here we go!
It was our first time in ORD
, and it was an almost perfect experience. After a taxi ride from downtown (expect a $35 ride), we headed a Terminal One with plenty of time to have something to eat and be sure to be one time at check-in
United 1049 is supposed to fly us to Anchorage with an almost 6 hours trip. It’s pretty long, considering the fact that we will fly a narrow (Boeing 757 200, N561UA). Departure was scheduled at 12:15 PM
. it as on time from the begining to the end!
The reservation was maid with Expedia. With E-ticket and no Mileage Plus account, we supposed we have to check-in with United crew. We used a kiosk, witch was convenient, easy and available in French! Congratulations for that straightforward process United! In less than 10 minutes, we have our boarding pass and our two big bags checked, the opportunity to select a seat and even to upgrade to Economy Plus for a $54 fee. We did not choose it at that time.
Now, we have to clear the security. A very enthusiast TSA
agent ask us to proceed by removing all stuff that could trouble the security machine, to remove belt, shoes, laptop computer from the bag and so forth. We did it, and cleared the security very quickly (maybe 2 minutes). The TSA
guys said “Good job, guys”, with a big smile! Really good experience with that guy!
Now within concourse B in T1, we took a general look over stores and food court. Our gate is C17, but we are far from a rush, so we take a general overview of this terminal. We found it modern and comfortable with plenty of natural light. The underground path between Concourse B and C is amazing.
We thought it could be a good idea to upgrade to Economy Plus, considering the fact that we will stay almost six hours on the plane. We headed to a United Customer Service desk. After a 10 minutes wait on the lane, the women told us that it’s not possible anymore (full flight), but that we have to ask directly at the gate, just in case. So we moved to Concourse C to have something to eat and proceed to the gate. United crew told us that we could upgrade with no problem at all. Unfortunately, we could not secure two window seats. Well, it’s not a big deal! The crew manages to secure the same row and suggest swapping during the flight.
Boarding process began at 11:45 (on time) and was pretty fast. The 5 extra inches is excellent for your leg room, so I personally think the upgrade worth it.
Take off was uneventful. Twenty minutes after, the complimentary drink service began. You also have the opportunity to buy “snack box” or “fresh food”. I’d choose a $5 chicken salad. It was fair and worth the $5. After this light meal, I’d proceed to the rear galley to exchange with Flight Attendant. I ask her the aircraft registration. She was curious to know the reason why I need it and was very very friendly. She’d offer to write it for me on a piece of paper. While she do that, I had the opportunity to exchange with her colleague and another PAX. Everybody was very friendly and glad to exchange with a French tourist that will explore other things in the US than New York and Las Vegas. There was an extra complimentary beverage service, not to mention coffee.
There was no PTV but regular CRT monitor with movies and other radio channel. Channel 9 was up, witch is excellent.
The view was amazing thanks to the outstanding weather. Alaska from the sky: a perfect introduction for us! We used runway 14, and I was able to enjoy Channel 9 to the very end of the flight.
As we proceeded to the baggage claim, we meet as expected ANCFlyer: it’s now the beginning of a fantastic trip in Alaska!
As a Skyteam Elite member, I found the experience very good, well above average. I really have to congratulate United crew, from ground staff to FA
