TRS-MXP-JFK-FCO-TRS On AZ

Mon May 29, 2006 9:05 pm

The 20th of may i flew to New York due to business reasons.

I live in Koper (Slovenia) at 5 km from the Italian border. I woke up at 4:30 and jumped as soon into my car to avoid lines at the border. I passed it easily in a few minutes and after 20 min i arrived at the airport of Trieste.
Easy and quick check in and i got even my boarding card for my Milan MXP New York JFK flight.

After the security i had the time for a quick espresso at the bar before to be boarded in the Alitalia's MD80 through the airbridge.

Trieste - Milan MXP flight AZ1336 dep. 07:00

We took off in perfect time and i saw the wonderful view of the Gulf of Trieste and my city Koper just in the other side.

After a few minutes we passed over Venice while the F/A offered us a quick snack (biscuits and coffee with orange juice). On my right i had the wonderful view of the Italian Alps with still a lot of snow.

After to have passed the Garda Lake the captain gave us some info about the flight and a few minutes later we started our approach to Milan MXP were we landed a few minutes in late because of the traffic at the airport.

Once landed we were parked at the Pier A of Terminal 1.

I walked for some minutes to the Pier B of the Terminal 1 where the Alitalia intercontinental flights are parked. I saw some B777, B767 and a Delta B767 and a Varig MD11 and some other widebodies.

I passed the passport control and i moved to the gate of my New York flight.

Milan MXP New York JFK flight AZ 604 B777 dep. 10:00

At 09:30 the boarding begun. I had a 33 A seat by the window.
The plane was completely full, in economy and in business.
At 10:10 we were pushed back and after some minutes in line (we were in the 8th position to take off) it was finally our time. On our right in the parallel runway it was another Alitalia plane a B767 that was ready to take off in the same time of us. While in the sky we turned on the left and the B767 turned on the right.
Once again a wonderful view of the Italian Alps with the screen in front of my seat that showed me the route.

A few minutes after we took off the cabin crew started to pass to serve us a snack with a drink. I got some nuts and a beer (Nastro Azzurro).

A few minutes later i started to watch a movie. The Alitalia B777 are equipped with a tv screen with tv on demand. Nice. And comfortable even their seats.

50 minutes after we took off the cabin crew started to serve the meal: hot pasta with olives and tomato sauce, salmon with toasted bread and cheese, vegetables, an orange juice, and an apple cake. Later the crew passed also serving more bread and a slice of pizza that was very good.
I got a bottle of Chianti, a whisky and a coffee.
After the meal i continued to watch my movie while on the right i had the first view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Next to me it was a Swedish guy who was going to the USA on holidays and we discussed a bit.
I slept then 3 hours after the movie was over and i must say i love to sleep while flying!   The AZ chairs are very good even in economy for sleeping.

When i woke up i walked a bit and i've been at the self service bar where it was a selections of drinks with nuts and biscuits.

I came back to my seat and i watched another movie.

While over Canada, the crew passed once more with a snack, a cheese or chicken sandwich with drinks and a few minutes later with the application to enter in the United States.

The we started our approach to New York JFK where we landed 20 minutes ahead of scheduled.

25th may

After 5 days in the wonderful New York it was time to go back home.

I took a cab to JFK. Once arrived at Terminal 1 i went to the Alitalia check in area where the flights to Rome and Milan are located.

I got my boarding card for the Rome FCO flight and my flight to Trieste. After shopping at the JFK duty free area i moved to the nice renovated Alitalia lounge. I'm an Ulisse member.

New York JFK Rome FCO flight AZ 611 B777 dep. 21:10

Boarding started at 20:30 and we were welcomed on board by the crew. It seamed even a F/A not european on board.
This time i got a 28 A seat.

The flight seamed full at 90%.

We took off at 21:25 and the crew passed soon again with a snack and some drinks. I watched again a movie while after 30 min later it was served us the dinner: pasta with pesta (basil sauce), roast beef, vegetables and a chocolate cake. This time i got a white wine, a Pinot Grigio.

After the dinner i slept and i woke up when on my right i saw already Europe.

After to have passed the French and Italian Alps the crew served us the breakfast, a selection of croissant with biscuits, coffee and orange juice.

Then it was a great landing with the sea on my right.

We were parked at Rome Fiumicino Terminal C where there were several widebodies, Alitalia B767 and B777, Delta, American Airlines, Thai, Emirates and others.
I took the little train that connects the Terminal C to the other Terminals.

I passed the passport control and i walked to Terminal A where my flight to Trieste was leaving.

Rome FCO Trieste AZ 1359 A319 dep 13:10

We were boarded on the new A319 from the airbridge at Gate A10 at 12:40 and the cabin crew welcomed us on board.

Safety instructions were showed on the screens while we taxied to the runway to take off. A few minutes in line and we were again in the sky.

A few minutes later the crew passed serving a snack, biscuits, coffee, water and orange juice. After 1:20 minutes since the take off we landed at Trieste airport where we were parked in front of the terminal in one of the airbridges.

I got my bags quickly and i walked to take my car at the parking in front of the terminal and then i took the highway A4 to the border. I entered in Slovenia and finally i was home.

In my experience, it is easiest to get to neither!

EWR and JFK will both present their own problems depending on the time of day you intend to try to get to the airport. Traffic will be your worst issues.

Personally, I would take a taxi - that would be a bit expensive, but that would be my choice - and it would cut down on the headaches of getting to/from the airport - either airport - from/to downtown.

There are airport busses as well.

JFK

From downtown Manhattan to JFK in 8 minutes... it just costs you 159$
http://www.flyush.com/

More seriously, I was told that it's easier to go to EWR, better train connections, less traffic,... (Just what friends told me as I have never been in NYC)

Next flight: hopefully soon...

Here's a NY'er who cares. Let me see if I can answers the question 1 at a time.

1. EWR and JFK have improved public transportation to Manhattan. At EWR you can take a train that will bring you into Penn Station (34th Street and 7th Avenue). First you take an intra-airport sky link train to the train station which is a 5-10 minute ride. The train from EWR to Manhattan is about 20-25 minutes. There are agents available to direct you if you feel lost.

At JFK we now have a Sky Link Rail program that can take you to Jamaica Train Station to catch the Long Island Rail Road into Manhattan Penn's Station or you can take the Sky Link Rail to the Howard Beach stop of the New York City Subway system and catch the famous "A" train into Manhattan. Depending upon where you are going in Manhattan and the time of day would make up which I would recommend. If you're arriving at JFK or EWR in the morning I'd strongly recommend the train and not a taxi, same applies for late afternoon arrivals.

2. The closest 6 Flags to NYC that I know of is about 1.5 - 2 hour drive in Southern New Jersey. It's a lot of fun and worth the day trip if you like 6 flag parks. Especially on a nice day.

Koper in my opinion JFK is a much more pleasant airport than Newark. Also the taxi is a bit more expensive to Newark, especially from Newark to Manhattan. In regards to time, it takes about as long to either airports.

Thanks for the report. My cousin usually flys on AZ from TLV to JFK via Milan. However I hear they often lose connecting bags.

Thank you for your suggestions. I also think that JFK is better than EWR (probably in terms of transportation) to the downtown.

About my AZ experience, basically i always flew well with AZ. About the fact that it can happen to lose connecting bags, the problem was not of AZ but of the services at MXP. This anyway it can happen everywhere.

It's an interesting place. I was there once back in early 1988.

Thanks guys.

Thanks Aleksandar. Koper is a nice little city. Capodistria, as the Italians call it.

In this days it's a nice weather and the Gulf of Trieste is really wonderful.

Thanks for photos, Koper!
The first picture is actually how I remember Koper. I was passing by on my way from Porec to Trieste and had very little time to see your town. Unfortunately, the weather was horrible (it was February, so you know well how the weather can be nasty at that time of the year in the Gulf of Trieste).

Koper, great trip report and thanx for sharing those pics. My whole family, from both sides are from Trieste (actually, they are from Umago and Lussino, but because of WW II they went to Trieste and spent there most of their lives) and I have been there hundreds of times. Now with my dad gone, every time I see anything related to Trieste, I remember my dad and grandparents and the rest of family and friends that are no longer in this world, so again, thank you very much!

regards  Smile

btw, Umago and Lussino, they are now called Umag and Losinj, correct?

You're correct, Ezeiza, but in Instria all signs are bilingual (Croatian and Italian or Slovenian and Italian). Actually, the whole area is a great mix of cultures and something unique too.

Thanks for the pictures of Koper. Before 1918 I believe this area including Trieste was part of Austria. In those days there was an Austrian Navy. I was in Bled a few years ago which was very nice but missed Lubjana unfortunately.
