LGB-SFO Via SLC On Delta ; SFO-IAD Via UAL

Mon Jun 26, 2006 8:40 am

458am- Wake up and started the day by packing a few last minute items. Also made sure the place was clean before I left; trash emptied, dishes washed, all electrical outlets were unplugged, etc. I made an attempt to log on to delta.com and print out my boarding pass. I wasn’t unable to print out the boarding pass for some unknown reason. Oh well, just have to wait until I get to the airport.

710am- Made my way to Long Beach Airport ( LGB ) via taxi. My original plan was to take a DL flight from LAX to SLC. Instead, I changed it to leave from LGB…which is also closer than LAX.

730AM-Arrived at LGB. Check in was fast. Nobody in the security checkpoint line either… At about 830am, it started to pick up a little bit in the terminal. At Gate 21, there was an American West ( I mean US Airways ) flight to PHX.

917AM-My flight ( Skywest 3863 ) would leave out of gate 23. This was also a full flight too. The aircraft was N453SW or something like that. The entire flight was nice and smooth. There was a bump or two upon arrival at SLC…nothing out of the ordinary. First time on a CRJ as well. I felt cramed on the CRJ…very very small aircraft. I opted to sace the restroom break until I arrived at SLC.

1210am-Touched-down at SLC. Upon arrival, I got something to eatat Burger King, and also a much needed restroom break.

1pm-Arrived at Gate C12, where I would wait … and wait … wait some more … take some pictures of airplanes and wait some more. My connecting flight ( FL 1440 to SFO was delayed leaving from LVG. It finally arrived in SLC around 345pm.

345pm – Flights were arriving from everywhere … and the C concourse was packed on this father’s day.

430pm-DL 1440 was ready for boarding to San Francisco. The aircraft was a MD90 … sorry didn’t record the reg ( for those that like to keep up with it ). The flight was about half full. At least I wasn’t crammed in on this leg.

441pm-We start rolling into the skies. Takeoff was normall. It vibrated like crazy though. It was smooth for the entire duration…even the landing

Arriving in SFO

After Landing in SFO, I decided to go over to the UAL Terminal and get my boarding pass for the flight I would take the next day ( SFO-IAD-PHL )

So after I got my boarding pass, I caught the hotel shuttle over to the Best Western Grosvenor. This is prolly the nicest hotel in San Francisco that Ive stayed in. Its located in South San Francisco… not far from SFO itself. My room was 817. It had the nicest view of the 101 hwy … in addition to good views of airplanes departing from Runways 28L and 28R. I ordered room service and watched the Simpsons before calling it a day. It was kinda hard to sleep at this hotel. Wanna know why ??? because of all those departing 747s  Smile

5am swings by … so I decided to get dressed after I managed to get some more sleep. Those 747s are sure loud …

615am-I finally leave the hotel on the shuttle bus back to SFO Airport. I check in by bag with curbside checkin, proceeded through security … and by time I get there, they were already boarding first class for my flight ( UAL950-Boeing 744 … N177UA ).

United 950 ( Callsign United 8154 ) to Washington Dulles. My first time on a 747

723am-Finally boarded the aircraft with the rest of Zone 2 passenger. My seat for the next 5 hours is 58A. I regret getting this seat, because it was very vey crammed for me. This was a full flight … and upgrade options were sold out .This is the row where the aircraft starts to curb inward.

753am-The flight was pretty much smooth until we were flying over Missouri and bumpy the rest of the way. I found myself getting up every 20 minutes or so … to relieve the pain that I experience in that crammed seat. I shouldve traded somebody for the Aisle seat but anyways. I killed time by listening to Ch 9 on this flight. Keep in mind this flight number operated daily out of IAD to BRU utilizing a Boeing 763. On weekdays only it operates from LAX-IAD as a B744. Our Callsign was “UAL 8154 heavy”.

Our altitude was FL350, and then we gradually increased up to FL370. It was bumpy on the way down to IAD…due to a few thunderstorms in the area, we had to do a holding pattern. Although it was bumpy on the landing, We made it down in one piece. We arrived at the gate around 410pm. I was for once happy to stretch my legs again . My connecting flight would be UAX 7126. The flight was delayed due to the weather here. The plane itself originated from PIT … so it was held on the runway in PIT.

It is a nice little airport. Emphasis on little...it can get VERY crowded sometimes.

Great report, I've seen all the DL planes you mentioned at least once  Smile

Glad to hear you liked the MD-90, and, as usual, bad ratings for CRJ-200s.

I also find it interesting that, yet again, a United Express CRJ2 is at the SkyWest Maintenence facility. Yes, I know UX is SkyWest too, but usually it's only DL Connection there, or so I thought.

I think I'm one of the few that do not like the MD-90s. While I love to see lots of different types, I wouldn't be upset at all if DL got rid of all of them. Anyway, Shadow's right about SLC. Show up between 9 am to 12pm, or 4-6pm, and it is a nightmare. Especially at the end of the C and D concourses where there are 6 gates right next to each other.

SLC IS a maintenance base for them, after all. Besides, they can send the aircraft to SFO, LAX, DEN, and even ORD from there on scheduled flights if they need to swap out planes.

Usually not. As the MD88 has real problems getting out of SLC in the summer, we're pretty much restricted to MD90s. They're perfect for SLC and they were nice for DFW. Thus you don't see many MD90s in ATL, they're very very busy in SLC (someone told me yesterday he saw all 16 DL MD90s at SLC at one time  eyepopping  )

Yes, looking at Delta's July 2006 timetable there are 3 MD-90 flights out of ATL..
