Hell Trip AKL-LAX-YYZ-LGA; JFK-LAX-AKL

Tue Jul 04, 2006 3:45 pm

Not a single uneventful leg on the above round trip!

1. NZ6 16th June, ZK-NBU. Lovely Y+ seat (25K); trip spoiled by an extremely agressive Australian couple in the seats behind who maid life miserable for crew & passengers alike. Whatever drug they were on - they needed more! Crew handed out free Koru club passes at the end of the flight to compensate. Otherwise - Y+ on Air NZ - excellent, and well worth the extra $$.

2. Connecting flight LAX-YYZ on a ratty old AC A320; flight took off on time but landed an hour later than scheduled - with no explaination from the crew. The 'estimated arrival time' just kept getting later & later. Weird.

3. YYZ-LGA on 22nd June - at check in I got sent by ground staff to use the automated machines - which would've been fine, were it not for the fact I got stuck behind two people who were completely clueless and took half an hour to check in. By the time I got to the front of the queue, the flight had closed. When I explained staff had sent me to the machine, and I got held up there, I was let on.

4. JFK-LAX 26th June, UA 757. Taxiied for departure, then stopped. Thunderstorms in area had halted all departures west. Waited on the ground for two hours before receiving departure clearance. New route took us over Canada, which added an hour to the flight time. So I had more than 8 hours in a cramped 3+3 757. Not nice. Arrived at LAX terminal 7, sprinted across to Terminal 2 for my connection NZ1 which had (fortuitously!) been delayed, and made it with seconds to spare. Unfortunately, my suitcase didn't - and on arriving in AKL after quite a turbulent flight, I had to wait an hour for the next flight which had my bag on it. First taste of new Business class though, which was out of this world.

There! It feels good to get that off my chest! Comiserations appreciated.  Smile

Not really a detailed report. A little hard to commiserate with so little info about the flights.

In future trip reports, try to discuss the flights at least in some detail, it would probably help us understand how your flights went.

Um, not really a good report. And I am glad that I wasnt on any of your flights as I could see I would be upset with you. Take a chill pill man. An extra hour flight is nothing. You make a big deal out of the smallest things

What more would you like to know? Gate numbers? How many pages in the inflight magazine? If so, you really need to get out more.........

Hmm. I've carried bigger burdens.

Fat, when life becomes more complex than eating pizza, mastering X-Box 360 and learning to shave you might begin to understand that reliable travel schedules are important to some people. But somehow, I doubt this'll ever happen.

I don't do any of these, and I didn't really like the TR at all. You sensationalize in the title of your thread, 'Hell Trip' which would make it sound like somebody threw up on your lap in the first hour of a 13 hour flight or you crashed into an ocean, while in essence all that happened is you got stuck in a line and your flight was delayed by some WX.

If you want us to feel bad for you, we won't. Some people would be happy to be able to fly that trip.

Yep, fair cop.

No, not really.

12 hours in front of people who are bordering on clinically psychotic (yes I'm an expert), to the extent the airline immediately hand out compensation isn't exactly routine. Neither is it for a flight to take 25% longer than scheduled without any explanation. Stuck in a line - yes, happens all the time; weather delays actually don't happen to the average traveller as much as you might think, especially when the outcome is spending three extra hours on the aircraft. Missed connections/bags, yes, happen all the time - my point is that all these things happened on one trip; there wasn't a single leg that went completely smoothly.

True enough - however like many things in life, the reality is never as good as the anticipation, and if you're making trips like this as I am as part of your job, it's nowhere near as fun as if it was pure indulgent hedonism...... you're too busy thinking about where you need to be and what you have to do.

Probably  silly

Given the content of the 'report', photos are out of the question I'm sure.

14,000 posts in just under two years?

Well - sorry, but I have a life.

Gotta say I'm astonished at the unfriendly reaction to my initial post. All I wanted to say was that I had a bunch of flights in a row which all had frustrations of varying significance. If somehow this is offensive, or insufficiently entertaining to those of you who rely on this website for gratification, I apologise.

Sorry, I don't really see whats so terribly bad about this report. It was shorter than most, but I've read longer reports that say less than this report did...I don't really see where all this backlash is coming from?

That sucks about the long flight from AKL...I wouldn't be happy in that situation either, and the fact that the crew felt compensation was warranted does say something about the situation he was in. The AC flight taking an hour longer without any say from the flight deck or cabin crew IS odd...any time this has happened on any of the flights I've flown, there has been an explination. I don't exactly call being stuck for an extra hour on a ratty AC A320 trans-con flight a great time either.

gasman, think you were in line with your observations, and don't mind the reaction you've got thus far; dont let it discourage you from future posts.

Sounds like you should have logged onto the actual airline's websites to send in a complaint rather than do it on here. I doubt you're going to find a whole lot of sympathy from an aviation enthusiast's website (airliners.net) unless you provide extremely detailed information.

Cheers!

Australian couple - him late 30's I'd say, "Van Halen" look-alike & her slightly younger. Trouble started on on boarding, when they found an elederly couple in their seats who'd misread their boarding passes. They were very rude to the old couple "f' word used which set the tone for the rest of the flight. Then they got upset at cabin crew for closing the overhead bin before it suited their lordships. Three 'f's' in that little outburst.

After takeoff....they argued with each other over whether they should have stayed in New Zealand (no thanks!), she stormed off sobbing a few times, then they'd make up, then another argument....... all the while getting frustrated with everything around them, literally trying to damage the seat & IFE because they couldn't make it do what they wanted. At one point the woman screamed at the person next to me for putting her fingers over the back of the headrest.

During the night someone somewhere had headphones on (it WAS a bit annoying, but only a bit) which also promted a bout of shouting and abuse around the cabin. Two hours before arrival someone close to these people opened their window shade (it was a completely appropriate time to do so) and got called a 'prick' in return.

So not exactly pleasant people to be around for 12 hours! And because they weren't exactly being physically violent, there wasn't a lot the crew could do........... but did recognise the plight of the people around them and handed out Koru Club passes as a small gesture.

I'm puzzled by the magic disappearance of time on your flight to Toronto! Leaving on-time yet arriving over an hour late! That **might** be explained away going west, but not coming east. If anything, you gain time coming east because of the jetstream.

Me too!

Nothing to do with the jetstream though; that's taken into account by the schedulers!

Prior to take off cabin crew gave the ETA as scheduled. Shortly after take off, the flight crew gave the ETA 15 minutes later than scheduled. Prior to descent another 20 minutes had been added on, and we arrived at the gate a full hour later than the scheduled arrival time.

I guess it must have been a combination of en-route weather & traffic, but some explanation might've been nice...

While the report wasnt long, it wasnt bad. Short, and to the point. Gasman, I thought it was a fine. Dont give a second thought to the comments above and please dont let them discourage you from posting future trips or messages, as stated above.

Good report, as far as im concerned you adressed the points that made and didnt make your flights good, and this is good. Some people dont have time to write 10,000 word reports and it is a nice change reading a small report every so often!!

Thanks
