Sydney Cairns Sydney & Holday Pics

14 July 2006
SYD - CNS
QF 167
B 767 338ER Reg: VH-OGH
Seat: 3K
Depart time, scheduled 08:05 Actual 08:07
Runway 34L
Arrival time, scheduled 11:10 Actual 11:14
Runway 12

A few months ago my girlfriends parents decided that they would take their caravan to Ellis Beach for their July holiday, and invited us to stay at a bungalow at the same park where they would be. We booked early our tickets as that time is very popular for travel to the warmer climates.

The day finally arrived, a rather grey and dismal day, but that didn’t really matter, it just made for some dreary photographs!
Check in was quiet – very different from the last time I flew to CNS. We went to the business class line as I am entitled to as a Qantas Club member, and after a few keystrokes from the agent, heard the words every flyer likes to hear, “We are oversold in economy, and you have been upgraded to business” Fantastic, my very first operational upgrade! I have had upgrades before, using FF points, and through “other means”, but never this way.
After passing through customs, as this was a domestic leg of an international flight, we headed to the lounge for a needed coffee.
Boarding started on time, but first I had to take a few photos much to the frustration of my girlfriend.

We then quickly boarded and started to enjoy our business class experience. It then became obvious why we were upgraded – many large parties of American school kids! Thank god for status with QF!
Pushback was a few minutes late, and together with a long taxi to 34L and then a wait in the holding position we didn’t get airbourne until 08:35.

Breakfast was similarly very late, which was disappointing as all I wanted is some more sleep. We had a short night sleep as we stayed up to watch the live feed of the Tour de France, and then got up early to make this flight.
Although it was late, breakfast wasn’t too bad, bacon & eggs and a croissant, quickly consumed and then reclined the seat and went to sleep.
The dreamtime seats are very comfortable for sitting in, but I have always had problems sleeping in them. For some reason my arms kept [ironically] falling asleep, and then resultant tingling wakes me up.

We made up a lot of time during the flight, and landed just after our scheduled arrival time, in sunny warm Cairns.

After a restful 10 days holiday it was time to depart and go back to work. Check in was very busy and no operational upgrade this time. It was so busy even the Qantas Club was full, so we didn’t stay.
The incoming flight was very late so we expected, and were told of a 20 minute delay, however at 13:30 the PA announced boarding was due to start immediately, so we promptly got up and headed to the gate.
Pushback was a few minutes late, but a quick taxi took us to runway 12 and an immediate departure.

A hot lunch was served, unfortunately I can’t remember what it was, it was that inspiring!

Arrival into Sydney

Thanks to a good tailwind we arrived very early into Sydney, and out of the airport before scheduled arrival time – love that!

Nice report and great pics, which ride did you prefer; the A330 or 767?

Although I am a Boeing person, overall the A330 was better, being quieter and more spaceous. Having said that, my biggest gripe with the A330 is the curvature of the windows - makes taking photos without reflections harder.

Cheers

You said that you had American kids on your flight, do you by chance remember the name of their tour, was it People to People? I was in Cairns while you were and went on a Great barrier Reef cruise with kids on that tour, they said they flew QF on a 767 around that time.

BTW, great pics and nice report.

Very nice trip report QFFlyer! I enjoyed reading it a lot.

Funny. Same thing happened to me in February. I flew JFK-MEX in MX 0001 (the redeye) in business class and I was unable to sleep well because of my arms falling asleep. I even thought I had some sort of circulation problem, but now I see I am not the only one. Any explanation?
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738
