CDG-JFK-LAX: AA And AF

Thu Aug 31, 2006 8:20 pm

Hi all, this is my first trip report!!!I will try to be short, avoiding the annoying details, and to give you my impressions.Sorry, no pics!!!

CDG-JFK:
Airline: Air France
a/c: Boeing 777-200ER
Registration:F-GSPB
Scheduled at 08:25 am
Departed at 09:00 am
I flew in Y class(Tempo)

When I entered the a/c, I was really impressed by the new seats in F and C class, I though I was in a Space Shuttle!!!Everything seemed as new in F and C class, the fitted carpet xas new, the projectors are replaced by LCD screens, there are blue lights in C class. All in all, a very smart cabin in F and C class.Anyway, I am always impressed when I enter a 777, my favourite a/c!!!

However, I was disappointeed when I saw that the Y class still had the old seats. These seats seem really old and should have been replaced.Indeed, my seat(38K) was broken,as well as the armrest,my PTV(N VOD, each film is supposed to start every 15 minutes, but I could not watch films!!!!) did not work well, the cup holder was broken!!!The strange thing is that I really enjoyed the flight in spite of all this!!!I enjoyed the power of this brilliant a/c!!!
The F/A were nice, but nothing extraordinary. My meals were kosher meals(breakfast and lunch), it was below average.
The flight was smooth, except one hour before landing when we went through a turbulence area during 15 minutes(moderate turbulence, I think). The flight lasted 7 hours and 15 minutes.

I will post the following later on
Flown:717,727,732,734,735,738,73W,742/744/748,752,762/2ER/763/3ER,772/77E/773/77W, 788, D8,D10,L1011, A3B2,A320,A321,A332,A343,A388

JFK-LAX
Airline: American Airlines
a/c: Boeing 767-200ER
Scheduled at 12:00
Departed on time
I flew in Y class(seat 29E)

Check in was really easy at JFK.The attendants were nice at the airport.
We boarded at 11:25.My first impression when I entered the a/c was:"This plane looks so old!!!".I think I was right, it seems that AA never changed the seats of the plane. The seats in F looked so ugly, I would never pay for a first class loke this one!!!In Y, the seats seemed narrow, the legroom was by far the worst I have ever experienced. The cabin was dark. The F/A were rude(except from a stewardess who was really nice and friendly), and did not care about their passengers(nothing to see with AF!!!).The service was really bad.Only beverages were offered during this five- hour flight(really disappointing):we had to pay for a sandwich (of course, no kosher sandwiches),we had to pay for the IFE.I told me:"Am I on a charter flight or on AA?".Really horrible. The flight was quite bumpy, we experienced some moderate turbulences due to thunderstoms. The landing was one of the worst I have ever had in spite of the nice weather in LA: at one point during descent, I thought we were going to crash, the descent seemed too sharp.I must say that I did not feel safe during the whole flight, I was OK only when I got off the a/c!!!A lot of people told me to avoid AA, but I wanted to see by myself how it was. Those people were really right.I will always try to avoid AA. I am happy that I did not choose AA for the Transatlantic flight(of couse, I know that AA must be different on international flight).
Anyway, I did not enjoy my flight. No comparison possible with AF.

LAX-CDG:
Airline: Air France
a/c: Boeing 777-200ER
Registration:F-GSPJ(old configuration)
Scheduled at 18:25
Departed at 18:40
I flew in Y class(Tempo)
Seat 41E

Security measures were really strict during this flight.
The attendants on the ground were not nice, some were even rude.
Our plane arrived at 16:05, I saw it landing, really graceful.
The plane had the old config. This time, I was not impressed by the cabin, I don't like the old seats in F and C class, the cabin looked darker but it was fine. There are still the old projectors, which look outdated. There was no empty seats on this flight. My seat was OK, everything worked very well, I enjoyed the IFE system. The legroom seemed less generous than on the CDG-JFK flight. The footrest were useless. The F/As were really nice, they made their job perfectly, very professional.I did not enjoy the meals(dinner and breakfast), but it was not AF food as I eat Kosher.I was only disappointing with the GéoVision system which displayed on this flight only one map(no info about the altitude, the speed...).
Our ten-hour flight was smooth, except from light chops when we were above the Great Lakes.Take off was really smooth, unlike descent due to the clouds.

Finally, I had a great time during this flight.

Now, I would like to compare AF 772s with LY 772s as I have flown both:

1-Exterior aspect:LY is the winner, the planes are always very clean.I prefer the GE engines though(they look bigger!!!)
2-Cabin general aspect:LY is again the winner, the cabin seems more modern.
3-The seats:I will talk about AF new seats:
-in F: AF is by far better
-in C: AF is also better, I simply love the new seat
-in Y: I prefer LY seats, the remote looks better!!!
4-The IFE:no comparison: AF is much better.LY PTVs are bigger though
5-F/As:both are great
Flown:717,727,732,734,735,738,73W,742/744/748,752,762/2ER/763/3ER,772/77E/773/77W, 788, D8,D10,L1011, A3B2,A320,A321,A332,A343,A388

AF is better than AA on transatlantic in Y. However about 5 years ago AA was better than AF when they had 34" seats and better food than now.

Nice report, very interesting to see your views.

- Looks pretty poor to me, AF should maintain their aircraft in a better than this, I would have written in to complain.

Quoting LY777 (Reply 1):
My first impression when I entered the a/c was:"This plane looks so old!!!".I think I was right

- Yes, it was the AA 762's are pretty old!

Quoting LY777 (Reply 1):

- AA are ok, nothing superb, I've used them transatlantic on 763,M11 & 777 and if the price was right, would do so again.

Look forward to more reports in the future.

Regards

Mark

AA used to fly 5 years + ago: MD-11. The B777 replaced them. Also 767 like now. A few years ago they reduced the legroom from about 34" which was fantastic to 32" or 31" not sure. Seat Guru lists legroom as 31" to 32".

The legroom was enough reason to chose them.

No, it's exactly the same on international. I flew CDG-ORD-CDG on AA in Y last december on a 763ER and had exactly the same impression as you : old tired plane, narrow and used J class seats of "the last century", poor service, no PTV, lack of space in Y (even if I'm not a tall guy), horrible food, etc

because only AA used a wide body a/c from NY to lax; furthermore, as I have the El Al Matmid card, I won points with AA

I just flew AA JFK-BRU and LHR-JFK and frankly I'm ashamed to be American. Awful awful food... and almost non-existent on-board service. Not one water run, only drinks run at the beginning with no nuts... did I say miserable food, I can't say it enough. Cheap cheap cheap. And there whole Flagship service is a joke.

Why ? Is it the A/C you don't like (as AA also serve CDG with this A/C)

that's because I dont like the "classic interior" of the 767, I don't like the old bins, and furthermore, there are noPTVs!!!
I prefer flying CDG-NY with an AF 77W !!!
