LCY-MXP-FCO-LHR On BA + AZ (let The Trouble Begin)

Thanks for reading my trip report  Smile I'll try and make it as interesting as possible - lets just say.....there are a few occurrences a little out of the ordinary.....
There are plenty of pictures and some videos too so it should be a little bit interesting. It is long so don't be bored  Smile

I decided to take a trip from LCY-MXP-FCO-LHR in one day, with a 6 hour stop in Rome in which me and my mate Rob wanted to meet up with a pal for dinner at his flat. Our flight schedule was as follows:
LCY-MXP BA Connect flt#BA8743
MXP-FCO Alitalia flt#AZ1039
FCO-LHR Alitalia flt#AZ210

Our first flight of the day was scheduled for 9:30AM so we left our houses and got to the train station for 5:50AM. Yes. 5:50AM. Not nice.
45 minutes and £6.50 later we were in London Paddington, "thanks" to First Great Western Link. We then caught a tube to Baker Street, then another Tube to canning town, and finally the DLR to London City Airport. All in all, the traveling took us about 90 minutes, which left about 2 hours to our scheduled departure.
Having never been to LCY before, I was amazed by the petite proportions of the terminal compared with LHR  Smile It was a really nice change. We were in the airport and through security within 5 minutes. We both grabbed a coffee and sat down at the windows with a brilliant view of the apron. Plenty of VLM F50s and Avros from Swiss, BA, SAS and Air France/Cityjet. It was great to see them taxiing around, taking off etc and all the ground ops were clearly visible.
Time flew by watching this, and soon our BA Avro had arrived and was being unloaded, refueled and cleaned.





The departure time had been shifted back by 5 minutes, but thats nothing really. In no time we were called for boarding, and went down to gate 2c.

Details: LCY-MXP (Dover, Brussels, France/Switzerland, Milan) 9:30AM departure

We walked across the tarmac to the front boarding door and entered the aircraft, greeted by the extremely friendly Purser and another stewardess. We were immediately notified by the pilot that there was a 15 minute delay for push-back due to 'unusually high congestion'. I hear that most times I leave LHR in the morning, so I'm used to it  Smile
The time passed quickly, and we backtracked along the sole runway at City, towards the turning point.





The flaps were lowered in preparation for takeoff which worried a few passengers, as they didn't understand why. Its probably due to the roof mounted wings showing more of the internal contraptions.

Soon we were taxiing past the water front queuing behind a KLM fokker and another RJ.





We lined up for takeoff and sat still for a couple of minutes. Takeoff was confirmed by the flight deck, and engines were increased to full power, with the brakes still on. What amazed me was the minimal noise from the engines of this aircraft. As you can see from the video below.

Departure was fast, bumpy, but quiet. We made a 180 degree turn and headed towards Dover. The routing for today was Dover-Brussells and then a direct routing to Milan

I was surprised at how quickly the little Avro reached its cruise of 30,000ft
As you can see below, the sky over the channel was pretty cloudy, but it always makes a nice view anyway





Shortly after hitting Belgium, the in-flight service began. There were cheese and ham, or egg and tomato croissants for Y class and probably something more fancy for Club Europe. Served with this was a choice of tea and coffee, and soft drinks. I chose a black tea, and was offered a slice of lemon, and also took an iced water. Nothing special - but better than nothing, especially on a forty quid flight.

Shortly after the food and drink service ended, the alps came into view, which provided 20 minutes of simply stunning backdrop for the engines  Smile

Shortly after this we approached Milan and passed over at 16,000 feet.





It took longer than expected to descend and line up, 20 minutes to be precise, but we were eventually cleared to land and started the typical Avro 'dive down' maneuvers. The gear being released was admittedly very loud, and there were a few startled shouts and words spoken before the crew informed us of what it was....

Finally we were on the ground and taxied to a remote stand somewhere in the middle of the airport. I was very impressed with this flight. BA connect evidently operate a full service standard out of LCY, probably due to the high Business passenger yield here. The cabin crew were attentive and kind, and one even played cards with a child in front of us, a nice touch and a very positive approach from a national carrier. These are the little touches which BA and its staff embrace every so often, and just make the experience a little more special.

So far then, the trip was going completely to plan, excellent service, enjoyable flights and on-time timings. Yes....I think you can see where this is going.....

We were at the checkin area at 13:10, 1hr 50mins before departure of our MXP-FCO flight.
It took us a good 10 minutes to realise that there isn't any dedicated desks, and you can go to any of them that says 'Alitalia Economy'.
Unfortunately, neither me or Rob speak Italian, so it took some work to get the check in assistant to understand that we were English :-S
We gave her our reference codes and she tapped away on the workstation before picking up the phone, where she remained for around 10 minutes (The first sign of problem...) She then put it down and said 'ok there is a problem'. The rest of her sentence was completely inaudible, so it was hit and miss as to what we understood. As far as we knew, everything was ok, until we saw our ticket that was.





Yes...we were on standby tickets - even though our tickets had been booked well in advance and we had turned up to checkin around 2 hours before. All a bit dodgy if you ask me.
I noticed that scrawled on one of the tickets was '14:00 desk 312'. So we waited until nearly 2 and then proceeded to desk 312 where there was one staff member and about 6 Italian gentlemen standing there. We asked why on earth we were on standby considering the time we turned up for the flight, and she informed us the flight was indeed overbooked and we would most likely not get on. We made it very clear that we were supposed to be meeting our friend at FCO at 17:00, yet she tried to get us on the MXP-LHR direct flight at 3 as she saw our connection and didn't listen to our explanation. Eventually she offered us a later flight to Rome, at 16:00, but out of Linate instead. We accepted, along with the other gentlemen, and she proceeded to be on the phone for the next NINETY MINUTES. Yes, 90 minutes. She was ignoring all of us, and refused to speak to anyone. By the time she eventually got off the phone, she handed us our 'new' boarding cards, and a €5 snack voucher. However, she then told us that we were on the 18:00 LIN-FCO flight, which completely buggered up mine and Robert's plans of dinner with our friend, so that was a real bummer. One of the Italian speaking gentlemen at this point got very annoyed and started shouting and pointing at the compensation card. She wasn't happy, but did admit we were all eligible for a €250 voucher. We were all given a €250 voucher from Alitalia. At this point it was hardly a bonus as the service we had received so far was so shoddy we felt like booking with BA and getting the f**k out of that place.
We were all then given bus passes on the Malpensa shuttle for our trip to Linate.

One thing to note here is the Italian drivers. Absolutely insane! Tailgating, speeding, lane swapping like nobodies business, and the Polizia don't appear to care  Wow!

After about an hour of driving from MXP, we eventually arrived at LIN, which appeared to be quite run down from the outside. Similarly, inside it looked pretty dated and run down. We were still not guaranteed on this flight, so both me and Rob were very stressed, as frankly we didn't want to be stranded in a country where we couldn't understand anyone and the airline was a circus...
Luckily we queued for checkin and received both boarding cards for the Milan flight as well as the London flight. Finally, the stress subsided  Smile
Another irritant was that we were scheduled for a Mad Dog out of MXP, which I was looking forward to, yet since we had been moved, we didn't know what we would get.
We made our way through security and grabbed an overpriced sandwich and a cola.
We both had our fingers crossed that we wouldn't be on a nasty little EMB or a boring 319. And, to our relief, we were greeted with this at our gate  Silly





Yay!
And, finally, after 3 hours of delays, a switch of airport and waste of dinner, we finally boarded our flight, on the last row of the left hand side of the aircraft, relatively near the engines, but also just behind the wings.
Airline: Alitalia (comedy up to this point)
Aircraft: Mad Dog 82
Registration: I-DANH
Details: LIN-FCO (3 hrs late...)

One thing I liked about this aircraft was the decals on the top of the wings, just a nice aesthetic touch.
One thing to note was the dated interior on this aircraft. It felt very used, and creaked a fair amount. But, as marketing is the way of the world, it just added character  Smile
One aspect of the taxi that I didn't appreciate was the fact that the cockpit door was open up until takeoff clearance, and various members of the crew were walking up and chatting. I thought this was a bit of a security lapse, especially considering the sad state of the air travel business. Perhaps this is a more common occurrence in Italy, I do not know. Perhaps some regular AZ domestic fliers could tell me?

View of wing and alps in the background. The flight was fairly uneventful, and around an hour in length. Shortly after the crew were 'released', they started a snack service. Offered was a choice of beverages and a chocolate or vanilla ice cream cone. I didn't bother taking a picture as it wasn't worth it :P

Soon after, we started our descent over Rome, where we could see many landmarks, and then started descending over water.








Landing was quite higgledy-piggledy, as can be seen in the below video. Apologies for the interruption from the sun.


We made a fast exit off the runway, but had a 15 minute taxi to our remote stand. We were both thrilled to discover that we would be deplaning through the back stairs of DANH. I'd never travelled on a 'dog' before so hadn't experienced this. To be quite honest, it wasn't anything that special, just some steep stairs and deafening and windy engines.

We were soon through immigration and back into the terminal, where we proceeded through security and had a poke around the duty frees. Robert bought himself some form of camera memory, and I bought some aftershave fragrance by Issy Miyake. We then had a bite to eat, and left for our gate with 40 minutes to spare. By this point we were pretty tired, as we had been up since 5AM, so grabbed a coffee of some variety. FCO is almost as crazy as LHR as far as navigating to your gate goes. We were scheduled to leave from C33, but this was then changed to C23 as we were walking there. Took ages. We got to the C area and then grabbed a very Gatwick-esque rail connection to C23, where we took a seat and listened to some appalling music. Probably Italy's answer to Boyzone or something. Bang on 20:45 we were called for boarding and we made our way up to the counters of the modern looking gate C23. I, (not Rob), in typical fashion had my bag searched and then a 'metal detector on a stick' (is there a name for this?) passed over my limbs and body to ensure I was safe to travel. Many people had their water confiscated. Luckily my aftershave wasn't confiscated. That would have been a bummer.
We were soon on the aircraft, seats 15 E and F, with me in 15F. I managed to grab one picture which wasn't too blurred and it shows some night activity and Fiumicino.





One thing of interest was the superb pitch and comfort values of the AZ 321 seats. Very good legroom and comfy seats, especially the headrests. Many people were commenting on this as it happens. So far, up to this point, we had both vowed that we were sick of Alitalia, even considering the 6 hours of experience. The mad dog flight was OK, but pretty unfriendly and relatively uncomfortable, and the customer service at MXP and LIN was second to everything. Appalling wouldn't be superlative enough. An analogy to the idea of walking on the M25 at rush hour would be more relative to our opinions of Alitalia at this point.
There was a delay of 20 minutes due to a broken down something-or-other, but finally we were making the long taxi to the runway. We received clearance and motored down the runway, in true diesel-whine Airbus 32x series style. I love these aircraft, especially on medium length flights like this, you cannot beat them IMHO. The pilot announced that to powerful headwinds, the flight time would be just over 3 hours, but they were hoping to hop into Heathrow due to the late arrival.
NERD DATA (well not really)
Cruising altitude: 10,500 metres
Cruise Speed: 750km/h
Head Wind: 150km/h
Routing: FCO-NCE(cannes, etc)-(up north)-CDG-(whatever nerd code is on the south of england)-LHR

The flight was relatively uneventful, and very relaxing. They served a snack and a drink, entitled 'AliSnack'. Pictures below.





It was OK, and thats all. Chewy and dry sandwich, disgusting gel sweet, and a bog standard pastry cake type thing. Was hungry though, so happily ate it. Along with a water and a black coffee. Mmmmmm, delicious

We soon approached London and started our descent over central london, seeing many of the well known landmarks lit up at night - very beautiful.
We came in on final approach and touched down smoothly on 27R, and for some reason applied ridiculously heavy brakes, presumably to get off the first available exit. Needless to say, this didn't save time, as we spent 20 minutes sitting idle waiting for a place at T2 to appear. FINALLY we were parked up with the engines closed down, which triggered the standard 'get up and go' of all the passengers, regardless of the doors being closed. Soon enough, we were out of the aircraft and on our way to passport control. Interestingly, and most commonly, we have more trouble getting back into England than any of the other countries that we travel to. Funny  Smile

Conclusion:
BA Connect was a brilliant experience, LCY was also a corker, and most enjoyable. The crew were attentive and polite and the flight was enjoyable, plus the aircraft was interesting for a change.

From here it all went a bit down hill - appalling customer service from AZ, and SEA at MXP and LIN, and uncomfortable and rickety Mad Dog service to FCO. However, they did replace my worries with more confidence on the LHR flight, and good customer service at FCO.
On the plus side, we both have €250 of Alitalia vouchers for use in the next few months. I think I shall take my mother to Rome in the coming weeks for a sightseeing trip.
Needless to say, I will never fly AZ domestic again, I will also try and avoid any kind of connection with them due to the problems that we encountered.
Other than that, the experience was positive, even if we didn't get to dine with our friend - which was a great shame. Maybe next time  Smile

I'm not one to be bitter, so doubtless I will fly with them again, I will just consider my routing more carefully before the next outing.

The same thing happened to me on TK last month only they got us on the next flight and helped us efficiently. I have heard some bad stuff about AZ and this report just makes me want to never fly them even more.

Very nice report and some good pictures!  Smile It seems like AZ is really "hit and miss" when it comes to quality - as long as everything goes according to plan, they are actually offering a pleasant flight experience, but it is total chaos, indifference and incompetence once something goes wrong.
Homer: Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true!

Great report!

Day trips are just unlucky... I went between LGW and MXP in June. Not only was the outbound flight delayed by over two hours, but my passport was stolen in Milan city centre!

Then my next day trip was meant to be to DUB and SNN, but it was on that Thursday when they foiled the terrorist attack and cancelled the flights... I still don't have a refund for one of the flights!
Next flights: LGW-LBA-LGW, LHR-SIN-SYD, SYD-BKK-LHR, LGW-GRO, GRO-CIA, CIA-MAD, MAD-LGW

I've not flown AZ since 1992, I did a coupe of flights, they were ok but nothing special. Th domestic flights on the M80's were nasty die to the high density seating config.

Nice report. Yes Italian drivers are crazy. I always avoid AZ on my Italy trips and use US to FCO and Trenitalia to get around or Air One if there having a fare sale. but i have flown AZ 4 times including once on the dog.

They're bloody insane! I was scared everytime we took to the road in Naples 2004. We were waiting at a red light and they started beeping us and drove around and across the junction! rotfl

What was the date of your trip on Alitalia from FCO-LHR? I just was on that same flight as you on August 27th leaving from Gate C33!!! Flight 210!!! Our flight was late also.

Despite their issues, the airline has a lot of character, I think that's something most people will agree on.

About the open flight deck door, I have seen this numerous times, for some reason mostly on the their Embrarers.

Sorry to hear that your plans got screwed up. AZ isn't my favourite airline, but as others said in this thread, it isn't as bad as some people believe it to be. I've flown them a few times, both domestic and international, and they were OK; they could be one heck of an airline if they got their act together, but alas, the solution to that problem is not that simple.

No, Italian drivers are not insane - in fact, they know their thing. It's the concept of traffic rules that is quite subjective: some (very few) see them as actual rules, most people think of them more as guidelines  Wink

If you don't consider driving less than a metre apart at motorway speed "insane" then I will agree with you  Yeah sure

I am sure they are supposed to close it, but alas, Italian's don't always do things by the books!

A rare view of the flight deck in action is a bonus - I have always enjoyed watching the crew at work, it's a shame its not more common place, even if for obvious reasons.

I've flown with Alitalia once, routing MAN-MXP-VCE then a few days later FCO-LHR (with Volare VCE-FCO just before they went bust). I have to say I was very surprised at how good the experience was, even in Y, so you may have indeed been unlucky (I don't speak Italian either and I know from my trips to Russia how useful speaking the language can be when things go wrong).

Mind you AZ are pulling out of MAN next month so I won't be travelling with them again, as I avoid LHR like the plague (only flew there from FCO on that occasion as my fellow travellers were continuing on to HKG).
