This trip report is much like my last one I did in June. This one was another NRT-SPN trip. On this trip, I would be flying on another 747-400/200 combination pattern except, I wouldn’t be doing an all-nighter down to SPN and back. Today’s flight was on NW25 from DTW-NRT, on a 747-451, ship# 6302. This bird was one of the 2 stored after we declared bankruptcy if i’m not mistaken. But back in service now, it would be our aircraft for the first of 4 legs on this trip. I arrived at the airport about 30 minutes before report time. Pushback time was at 1425 local from gate A56. I walked into Detroit In-flight, made my 1.5 hour check-in call before brief started at 1255. Mary Ann was the purser on today’s flight. Winfield was our concourse manager for today who is there to provide assistance to the crew during the boarding process. I am last to bid since everyone is a gazillion years senior to me. During the brief, we go over procedures, meal counts versus customer count and boarding stations. Today, we’re kind of light with the holiday weekend, 41C 204Y. I’m working the 3B position where i’ll be seated at door 3L, inboard. My zone for the in-flight service is Team 2L which zone’s (part of) C, D and part of E are my responsibility. I fill in my break position and my spot on the duty-free trolley. I’m working with Jackie, who is my shadow on Team 2R. We have 12 crewmembers in all, in which 5 of us are continuing on to SPN. We break to go to the aircraft, where boarding time is scheduled at 1330. I head to the ATM machine to get some cash before I head down to gate A56.
I decide to walk to the gate as I always do, to get a little exercise, (I never take the tram unless I absolutely have to). I stroll up to the gate and find that we’re restricted from boarding the aircraft while an arrival security check is done by the TSA. The aircraft arrived into DTW as flight 70 from KIX. We sit in the jetway, and take a snap of the nose of the aircraft. At gate A60, the Air France DTW-CDG flight, an A332 occupies the gate next to us. After 20 minutes of waiting we’re cleared to board the aircraft, stow our bags, preflight our j/s and set up for boarding. I begin by arranging the newspaper cart, and helping set up the pre-departure drinks at the galley credenza next to door 1R. The purser is greeting passengers while Quinton, the WBC galley person is setting up the galley and reviewing the C class meal count and catering details. John, who commutes from RDU, and my self set up the pre-departure beverages before the passengers come aboard. The beverages offered are Budweiser beer, La Croix sparkling water, Brut Champagne, and Minute Maid Orange Juice. We also offer a Mimosa upon request. We begin boarding at 1345 and A zone only got about 7 or 8 people in it. Most WBC passengers wanted to go upstairs to the upper deck. They ground crew closes door 1L leaving 2L open to accommodate the rest of the passengers boarding. At 1415, we’re ready to close the door and be on our way. Door closes and we arm the doors for departure, and secure the galleys for push back.
We gently start moving backward out to the main thruway and turn to head toward the east/west runways to out to our assigned runway which was 4R. We slowly pull into a queue of other aircraft and the flight deck crew makes the “Flight Attendants, prepare for departure” announcement which indicates 5 minutes until we enter the runway. After about 3-4 minutes we pull into position for take off. The engines spool up to full power, as we begin to roll down the runway. The wings start to bend upward as we rotate for take-off. As we leave the runway the aircraft shutters and vibrates momentarily as the gear and control surfaces are retracted and we climb out heading N/NW.

As we keep in the ascent, that purser continues with the after take-off announcements which include order of service, IFE info, customs documentation, duty-free sales/Japan home-delivery promotions, and mileage for Worldperks and SkyTeam members, and so on. Soon afterwards, we all gather in the mid galley for a service brief with the Main-Cabin Coordinator, or MCC as it’s notated on our bid sheet. Anita from Cleveland, Ohio, who’s been with NWA for 23 years, takes the position today. We go over the service flow which is a schematic laid in accordance with the number of crew in the main cabin section. We’re 20 minutes into the flight to where we prep the galley and the trolleys for the beverage and meal service. I go to the rear of the aircraft to retrieve my trolley. There are 6 trolleys in the rear of the aircraft and 2 in Galley 2 which is at Doors 2 beneath the staircase to upper deck. I set up the top of my trolley with the usual items such as OJ, water cups, green tea, milk and a bag of pretzels. We all have our different ways of doing, so I try and arrange it in a way that is easiest for me. I start at the C/D partition between doors 3 L/R. And move back toward the rear of the aircraft as the captain does his little shpeil with the flight information, (Flight time, 12hrs 40mins, with light to moderate turbulence expected about 1 hr from arrival in NRT). This process of handing out the beverages takes roughly about 30 minutes on average. Concluding with the beverage service we each have our own little jobs to do, from re-stowing our trolleys to loading the meal trolleys with the hot entrees, to picking up the cups and glasses from the drinks service. I’m on the team that glides through the aisle with the trash trolley picking the cups, glasses, and pop cans. In order to save space, we place the cans and cups in an empty drawer on top of the trolley after dumping the left contents into the bin to conserve the amount of space. The senior ladies who do these trips go ballistic if you don’t. That’s their biggest pet-peeve. Everything picked up I then head back to the mid-galley to assist with handing out the special meals before we head out with the regular service. Special meals handed out, we hit the floor with in our assigned sections. I start again at the exit row again at door 3L and head aft. I’ll meet with the lady starting at Door 5L who is heading forward. We’ll meet approximately 5-7 rows aft of Door 4L. This type of service called a squeeze or a converging service. The type of service differs with the number of crew in the cabin, and by aircraft. The service flow is shown on the back of the bid sheet, or Crew Organization Chart as it’s officially known. Following the meal service, we walk through with coffee and tea seconds. Green tea or Ochah as it’s pronounced in Japanese is the hot item with our Japanese customers, while coffee and oolong tea is less popular which our other customers. This is a quick process, as everyone runs through one another’s zone. Our trolleys that we handed the trays out with are the ones we use to pick up with. We remove the drawer of beverages on top of the trolley and replace it with an empty one for the cups and left over cans. The saving of space is once again paramount. At this point in the flight, we’re flying over Northern Alberta, Canada heading towards the Yukon and NE Alaska. The meal trays picked up, and trolleys stowed, as my seniority dictates, I head up to the fwd to retrieve my duty free cart from the upper deck. I go upstairs to the UD galley while navigating myself as well as my cart around the 2 ladies and their service which is still in progress. I slide my cart into the cart-lift, and send it down to the main deck. I send the other one down as well as a courtesy to my fellow flight attendants who’re not yet finished in the back. My self and Jackie, a 24 year flight attendant, who started with Republic Airlines in 1982, is my duty-free partner. She and I inventory the cart, take any noted discrepancies, we enter our information (name and employee number) into the little Windows-based hand-held computer, and then click on “Duty-Free Sales” to start selling. The interpreter, Yuki, who is NRT-based, goes through WBC to take orders from the A, B zone, and UD while we work our way down the aisle in main cabin towards the rear of the aircraft, meeting up with the duty-free cart near door 5L. Actually, Jackie just makes a horseshoe, walking around to the other around through to the other side, so I don’t have to navigate the cart through the small cross-aisle between 5L/R since it such a tight space. So with the aisle portion of the duty-free sales concluded, I put my own personal padlocks on the cart to prevent any type of theft, which is always possible. The crew rest break times were set, and I was on the first break period, which means I had 15 minutes to wolf down my dinner. What I ate:
Appetizer: Jumbo lump crabmeat in a cream sauce with fig and apple slice o a skewer
Garden salad, with assiago cheese shavings, and Ranch dressing. Main entrée: Beef shank au gratin with steamed vegetables and asparagus spears. Dessert: Chilled Brie Cheese and water crackers. Since I was in such a hurry and in the company of my coworkers, I didn’t take picture of it, lol.

So, the crew rest breaks were timed at 3hrs, 5mins. I decide to take a empty pair of seats in WBC because I really don’t feel up to going all the way back to the Crew Rest Area and suffer the climate control wars that go on in the CRA, which the menopausal women who’re experiencing hot flashes turn the temp down, and the lean, thin ladies who get cold easily, turn the temp up to 5000 F. It is so annoying, so if there are empty pairs of seats in WBC, i’ll grab one of those. I wrote the first part of the TR while sitting there. I stop what I was doing, to get a little sleep while I still have 2hrs and some change to get a few ZZZZZZ’s..
I wake up about 30 minutes before my break is up, so I pull out my iPod from my tote bag, and write a few more lines of the trip report before I have to go back out on the floor. The break ends with Susan giving me a hot towel to freshen up my face. I go to the restroom to clean my teeth, and run the electric razor across the chin. We swap breaks as the 2nd crew goes on break. I go back to Door 5R which is my position during the 2nd break period. I cruise by the Door 4 galley to see what they need of if a water walk is needed.

We’re supposed to pass out water every 30-40 minutes. And this seems to be one of the crews that do this, so it’s good for both passengers and ourselves, because it keeps them hydrated and us on our feet to stay busy. The time seems to fly by when you keep busy. I sit down to read a tabloid magazine that one of the girls brought with her. Not all that interesting, but it’s something to read nevertheless. We’re about 3:30hrs from landing, so we load the 2nd service entrées in the oven for the breakfast service, which is a choice of Japanese fried rice or a ham and cheese omelet, both served with a ramekin-like container of orange juice, a scone and jam. We start cooking the meals about 2:40hrs before landing with the 2nd break flight attendants scheduled back on the floor at 1:40hrs and meals service beginning 10 minutes later. Julio and I water down the hot towels about the time the 2nd break folks come off break. All the 2nd service carts are now prepared, and loaded to go out for the service. We put the green tea and coffee in the pitchers on the top of the trolleys, and all of us go out on the floor to serve the breakfast. It’s about 1:30 from arrival in NRT. The captain starts the arrival announcement with the latest weather report, and landing information. We’re now scheduled to be 20 minutes early because of the lighter-than-expected headwinds as we passed the Kamkachtka Peninsula and Sakhalin Island approaching Hokkaido, Northern Japan. We start to clear the trays after the 2nd service, and begin to collect service items. The 2nd service takes less than 40 minutes because half the plane is still asleep. We conclude the audio/video portion of the flight and collect the headsets and any more trash that was still left. Before we begin the finl descent in to Narita, I take a moment to grab a little breakfast, although it's 3:45pm, I have the hame and cheese omelette in the crew tray carrier

Descent for landing
We begin our sequence for landing as the flaps, and slats are deployed for landing giving us the tell-tale shaking of the aircraft. I peer out the door 4L window and watch the spoilers raise and lower to slow us down a bit quicker. The flaps are lowered full and the pre-landing chime is given. The purser gives the announcement for landing just before the moaning of the landing gear being lowered and the swift bang gives, what I hope is all-green in the flight deck. The ground moves closer to us as we descend over the outlaying villages and towns on the landscape into the Narita Airport. The vapor trails stream from the control surfaces as we bank and straighten for landing in to NRT. We slide over the hash-marks and touch down in Narita just little before ½ past 4 in the afternoon. The reverse thrust bring us to a slow crawl at the end of the runway as we exit at the turn-off and head to the terminal. Unlike the last time, we have a terminal gate instead of a bus-gate. We taxi past a few UA 747-400’s, a AA 777-200, and a JaLways 747-300 until coming to the other red-tails at the rotunda where we usually park. We park next sister-ship N663US on one side and 747-251, N624US on the other side that arrived from HNL before us, but was unable to get the jetway up to the aircraft. We park the aircraft and raise the cabin lighting to full-bright. The purser does the doors-disarm announcement, and Quinton at 1R does the all-call. I disarm 3L and cross-check with Kelly at 3R. Everyone rises in unison to retrieve their luggage and personal effects form the overhead lockers and under the seats. Parents gather their children and their other belongings. The cabin slowly empties as we say goodbye and Arrigato sai mas and all that. I check my coat pocket for my passport even though I don’t need it going through customs here. We only need to get our orange shore passes. The last few passengers leave the aircraft heading out the door, only a few special-needs passengers needing wheelchairs and assistance off the aircraft. We deplane aircraft heading to the escalator up to the 3rd floor that goes to the customs and arrivals hall.

I take a few snaps of Narita. They ended up having to move the HNL aircraft over to another gate. And we beat the SEA, and SFO flights in, which is critical, because we get 1st crack at the rooms at the hotel. I grab my shore pass, fill out the appropriate information, and walk through the crew/diplomat line towards the escalator downwards into the baggage claim area. I pass by the baggage carousels handing the Continental flight from EWR, the UA flight from ORD as well as our flight. With nothing to declare, the agent waves me by and I head out in to the arrivals area and out to the bus to the hotel. Thus ending today’s flight. The plan is for tonight, shower first, and then to head out to the favourite crew haunt with a few of the crew, the Yellow Awning(which does not have a yellow awning) for Gyoza and a steak dinner. The palce is crowded every night because most of the crews go there. KL, AF, AI (cockpit crews only), SK, and a few others. There’s also a sleazy bar nearby called The Crew Lounge (which it’s logo is a plain, big red tail) which was opened by a male flight attendant years ago which has been thought to have female prostitution, but it’s rumour only.

Crew show was at 0830hrs for the crew bus to the airport. There 5 DTW-based crew, 2 HNL, 1 PEK, 1 PVG, 1 BKK, and 3 NRT based flight attendants to makeup the rest of the crew. We get to the front door about 20 minutes later, and walk through the crew entrance of security. I get out my orange shore-pass to present at passport control. The crew kind of splits up to find their own way to the aircraft. Today, it would be one of our classic 747’s down to SPN, ship# 6623. We have only like 4-5 left in the fleet, down from the high number of 44 at one time. She was an old bird, but still looked good in her bowling shoe paint. We trickled aboard the aircraft for the NRT-based flight attendants joined us. We bid for our positions, while some of us set up the newspapers on the credenza for the pre-departure service.


I was working the 3D position, which is Team 2R on the starboard side between doors 2 and 4. Flight time today would be 3hrs, 30 mins. The load was 30C and 400Y, on the high density 747, FULL!. Boarding starts at 1 prior to departure, the passengers come aboard, all going on holiday for a week in Saipan. The rear of the cabin fills up first, while the mid-ship is still somewhat empty, until the last few come on-board. The usual task of closing bins, and checking exit row verification precedes the door-closing. I walk through the cabin looking for any improperly stowed bags of items. I chat with a few other crew members at the Door2 galley as they prep the area for the service following take-off. I also bring my crew meals back to the door 4 galley to make it easier to get to, rather than interrupt the fwd galley during their service. The doors close and we get the announcement to arm the doors for departure and cross-check. The doors armed, and the three B’s verified, (Bags, Bins, and Bodies). After the captain gives his little opening monologue, we push back from the gate and hold in position for a little over 10 minutes while we wait for the engines to start up. The engine wind up one by one, as the power comes switches from external to engine power. The safety demo video commences shortly after we begin to taxi towards the departure runway. Each flight attendant take a position at the zoned video screens just case the video cuts, and we have to go to a manual demo. We lumber along the taxi, past other 777’s, 747’s, A340’s and the others of different carriers form around the world. We follow a BA 747-436, a JL 747-446, and a NW Cargo 747-2J9F as they wiz by on the adjacent runway. We pull up to the runway threshold and hold in position. I’m chatting with a Julio who is seated next to me on the jumpseat. We pull onto the runway and hold momentarily for take-off. Approximately 2 minutes later, the engines spool up and we’re rolling. The bumps get closer together as we go faster and faster, until we lift off from the runway, heading skyward. The gear retracts and the wind resistance gets lesser as the flaps and slats retract into the wing surface. We’re gaining further altitude as we climb to cruise.

The after take-off announcement is given as we begin preparations for the meal service. The green light is illuminated as the sterile cockpit is secured permitting non-essential communication between the cabin and the flight deck. The Customs and arrival informational video is rolling informing our passengers of the arrival procedures at SPN and how to fill out the documentation. Some of us begin passing out the forms for the passengers while the other attendants begin setting up the trolleys for the meal service. We would begin the service with the routine pre-meal beverage service, followed by the meal service. There is only one selection for the entrée which makes the service a lot faster. It wouldn’t really be a issue if the equipment was a 757, but a full 747 with 430 passengers is a different story. After the beverage trolleys are set up, we hit the floor to serve the passengers their drinks before we go out with the meals. We serve the passengers relatively quickly, and pick up the dirty glasses before we go out with the meals. I start form row 25 and work aft to about row 41 before I meet up with HNL-based FA, Colleen. We then clear the empty trolleys to do seconds on coffee and tea which is always in heavy demand, especially the green tea. We work through any section, or zone which is left to be done, while the galley assigned FA’s, prepare the empty trolleys for the pick-up. We begin in the same order that we began, so the same amount of used trays go back into relatively the same trolleys at the same time. It makes for a faster pick-up. Once the cabin is picked up, Colleen and I go to inventory our duty-free trolleys to start the in-flight sales portion of the flight. We have the ease and convenience of using these palm(TM) computers, which inventory the cart, and regulate sales. It allows for faster closure and accounting at the conclusion of sales. So the time allotted for in-flight sales is cut down by 15-20 minutes. We go through the cabin selling duty-free items. Not really a big sellers out of Japan to the US or US territory. We sell about $250, mostly cigarettes and booze. Colleen and I put dummy seals on the cart not sealing it until closer to landing to allow for a few extra sales should there be any. Most of us are eating our crew meals at this point. I choose one of the WBC entrées, which is rice bowl with crab and shrimp, is a ginger sauce. Soy beans and tofu also flank the contents.

Just before descent in to SPN
We go through the cabin with another beverage service, with some wanting to down a quick liquor libation, or enjoy an Asahi before landing. Following the service, we make our way through the cabin to distribute extra immigration forms to anyone who needs one. We begin to make our descent into Saipan. We make a pass over Guam, Tinian, and Rota before we start our spiral approach to Saipan. We walk through the cabin with trash bags to collect the remaining service items. Everyone is in vacation mode, ready to head to the beaches, so much, the ladies already in their swimsuits and suntan oil.

The captain gives his arrival PA, light rain, cloud breaks, 79 degrees. The rains, expected to taper off by the time we land, bring a little relief to the holiday-makers. The speed-brakes, flaps and slats slowing us down, make the vibrations louder. The announcement to turn off portable electronic devices is closely followed by the final approach signal. We check the cabin before being seated for landing. The flaps are fully deployed are the landing comes down to a loud thump. We descend over the water, banking left and right as we coast over the hash marks of the runway and make a smooth touch-down. We grind to a full-stop at the end of the runway, and exit at the 2nd turn-off and head toward the terminal.

We’re the only aircraft at the airport. With the 747’s sheer size, we make the terminal look 1960’s style. We pull up to the gate, and come to a full-stop. The cabin lights come up full-bright, we disarm our doors and crosscheck each other. The passengers’ one by one leave the aircraft, excited about they’re holiday that’s minutes form beginning. The last few passengers gather their belongings and head out the door to the beaches. Our ground time here is 1hr, 55mins. I go off the aircraft to take a few pictures, and surf the free internet service at gate 4 which is no longer in use because of the downturn in traffic.

I was a purser before, but quit because of the stress of the job. Being a junior purser hurt my seniority, and was stuck having to bid for trips that I couldn't hold, and prevented me from picking up trips that I wanted to fly. And having to referee between crews and passengers wasn't worth the energy.

Yo mate! I love that report. I cannot wait to hear about your next trip! Oh what a good memories of the 742 doors. It looks smiliar to the old Qantas 742's door. Did you know that there's a small sqare door which is placed at the top of the flight deck?

Im suprised that you are allowed to film when the plane take off? I was told to turn off the video camera and camera by Qantas cabin crews many times when the plane take off and landing.

Best report here, even out of the other f/a reports. You really help us get a sense of what it's like to view the aircraft as a place to work. My brother's with NW 32 years (DFW ramp). It's good to see/hear/read someone who cares as much as you do about your job that you'd take the time to share it with us. Please continue to write the reports. I'd love to read another WBC report on a European long haul next time.

hi! thanks for sharing again. seems you always get the SPN routes...try getting GUM once in a while. Would you happen to know when during the winter season will the 2nd NRT-GUM-NRT service with the 752 operate? GUM is super busy with NW flights...2 to NRT, 1 to KIX, & 1 to NGO daily!

I remember the days when NW was competing with CS on the GUM-HNL-GUM routes with a DC-10 and non-stop GUM-ICN-GUM with a 727. Those were the days that I was a loyal NW customer, but when they stopped, CS/CO got my business.

Thanks, I'm going to try some domestic ones when I get the chance. The DC9 trips can be hard becuase we have 5 and 6 leg days, swaping aircraft and all. The 757/Airbus trips tend to be a little easier, because the flight are alittle longer.

Excellent trip report. I like your writing style. It reads well and gives us a good idea on what it is like to work a 12-13 hour flight. I look forward to reading more of your reports in the future.
I'm leavin on a jet plane. Don't know when I'll be back again....

Yea, it can be boring. The flight coming back, I was forced to listen to an FA who was in a bad marriage and having fiegn interest over the fact that her husband was a drug addict and giving me her whole lifestory. I was more interested in chatting with the ATA flight attendant, who was commercialing back on us. It was a long flight back, a long flight back.

thanks for sharing those photos on the return trip...I always wondered what the nose section of NW's 744 looked like (only been in 742).

Seems very spacious. Was that your crew briefing taking place?

Yep, looks the same as the 200 except for the WBC seats.

Yes, we brief on the aircraft in most cities internationally. In AMS however, KLM let's us use one of their briefing rooms at the airport before we board.

Great report, Les. I haven't flown a south trip since I was based in HNL years ago (I'm now in BOS). Makes me want to try and pick one up as a one-way trade.

I took a series of photos of the same ship 6623 taking off in NRT few days later on Sep 9, probably on the same flight. This is just after lift off from RW 34L.

I love this Trip report!! One of the Best. I have Taken Northwest From Narita To New York On September 6th, 2005 It was the smoothest flight i have ever had. I hope to see more Trip Reports from you soon. Love it.

Really a nice read and glad that you can find the time to do it. Interested to read that you have only 12 FAs on your 747-400. Also when you bid for positions does it go on seniority, and then what happens when you then go on to the 747-200 with new crew? Do the other based crew have seniority too? I ask that as our International crew have no seniority and set positions to work. Do you prefer the 400 to the 200 jumbo? Nice to read, many thanks

Yes, our service flow seems to work well with 12 or 13, any more and we're falling all over ourselves. We used to complain, but we've become so used to it since the introduction of the combined service.

Yes, from the top down always except for duty free which always goes junior.

We re-bid in seniority order again. We re-bid anytime the there is an addition to the crew which is every leg internationally.

Yes, they bid in with us according to Date of Hire. Our seniority system is different from the US-based flight attendants and the Pacific Division, so we just give our hire dates and bid off that way.

The only set position in the pacific division is the Main Cabin Lead(MCL) which is the coach section purser so to speak. They're given the set designation on the interport flights. The Main Cabin Coordinator is a deferrable position to-and-from the US to Asia. We don't have any foreign flight attendants flying between Japan and the US becuase of our scope protection which bars the company from doing that so it protects our turf in a way. NW tried to get the right to allow foriegn flight attendants to work a majority percentage of the position on the international flights, but a court decision upheld our case to not allow it.

It depends on the configuration. I like the -400 better then the Beach configured high-density 747-200(HNL-Japan routes). The -200 is a little antiquated. The standard configured 747-200 was nice becuase the business class section expanded into C-zone. We used to have to use them from SEA/LAX/SFO/MSP-NRT.
