BRU-LBA 13/09/06 With BMI Embraer 135

Tue Sep 19, 2006 7:31 am

3 months ago I received a positive answer from the University of Leeds telling me I was accepted for a Ma in transport economics. The purpose of this flight was therefore quit simple! Get to Uni easily without too much hassle since I had to carry quit a lot of stuff!!!!...

Route: BRU-LBA
Plane: EMB 135
Date: 13-09-06
Flight number: BD 712
Seat: 7A
Fare: 97.44€
Load-factor: 40% at most

Whenever you go abroad for a long spell, you always feel quit nervous. Therefore I hope you will understand that I had no time or energy to take some pictures of my flight...

Parents dropped me off at about 08h50. At the time I was convinced that my flight was at 9h40, so not seeing Leeds being displayed on the departure screen in front of the baggage drop-off area really got me worried. What if the flight already departed... Anyway a few minutes later Leeds was displayed as being a 9h50 flight. My fear all of a sudden disappeared.  Wink

As I arrived at the BMI baggage point, I wasn't really sure where to queue. My ticket being a premium economy ticket, should I queue like everyone else or go straight away to the privileged queue? Not knowing what to do I decided to queue like everyone else. After a 10 minute wait I arrived at the check-in desk. Having already checked in online, the lady didn't have much to do. I was overweight luggage wise (24.5 kilos instead of 20 Kilos allowed) but thanks to the price of my ticket + the low load-factor I think, I wasn't charged anything extra.

Heading to the B pier was such a joy! No long walk to get to the security check point. Security check went quit fast though with all the stuff I had in pockets, + a rug sack and a laptop which I had to be take out of its carry-case, it was quit a mess to put everything back where it belonged after the x ray.

My boarding pass said I had to get to gate 97, for which I thought it would be a long walk to get there. Little did I know that it would be a short walk since gate 97 is actually near the middle of the pier+ downstairs. There was another flight going to Bristol at the pier next door. After a while a bus arrived and picked up all passengers going to Leeds. I was very surprised to see the bus driving towards the old satellite terminal, then underneath it to finally arrive in front of plane which was parked at the right side of the main road linking the arrival and departure terminals to Brussels and beyond.

Entering the plane was a funny experience. It was very narrow and I had to bend a bit as well. Found my seat which I had pre-booked on Internet. Strange experience to sit on your own!!! (seat arrangement 1+2) Looking around me everyone was dressed in a suit whereas i was dressed very casually. BRU-LBA high yield low load route I assume.

The purser was a middle aged woman. For such a small plane she was the only flight attendant on board.

Take off quit smooth. Expected a lot more turbulence but everything went fine. An egg panini was served with a choice of drink. Nothing exceptional to say about this flight. Since the sky was clear up till England we could see quit a lot of what was going on underneath the us. Most impressive was probably the amount of ships heading to the various ports situated along the North Sea. In the plane I was also reading an article in the economist talking about the various useless security measures in planes. Seating should apparently face backwards like the military do already, and mobile phone are only not allowed on plane because they interfere with the mobile phone networks on the ground. I wanted to show that article to the purser but didn't have the guts at the end.

Landing wasn't that smooth. I had a feeling that we landed way further than we should have done. Therefore it definitely felt like the brakes were applied fully. Runway didn't seem that long either though.

Leeds-Bradford is a small regional airport. Doesn't have that much traffic. Bmi serves a few destinations such as LHR, BRU and CDG. Thanks to the LCC revolution and Jet2 though it is linked to quit a few holiday spots. And u get a flight to Dublin with Ryanair... That is about it I believe. MAN being quit close it would be difficult to expect more "Exotic" destinations

To finish off this report a few words about where I live: Leeds is AMAZING!  Smile Very nice city with a vibrant shopping district, a lot of nice buildings, Wonderful nightlife... I live in halls in Headingley which is just under the flight path towards LBA airports. Planes fly very low. You can easily spot planes. I saw the same BRU outbound flight as I took On Friday for example.

Hope you enjoyed my report... My first one actually. I got another one waiting in the pipeline but this time with pics.

Any comments questions, suggestions much appreciated...

Wow, two bmi ERJ reports here on a.net in just two days! I enjoyed reading, I had no idea bmi serves so exotic routes.

You checked in on the internet. Is it true that Economy passengers who don't do internet check-in and don't use the automatic machines at the airport, but instead go to the counter for check-in have to pay a fee? Charging for the use of the check-in counter, but then again not charging for excess baggage, quite an unusual approach, I have to say.

KLM used to have a flight to AMS, I think. But maybe this was back in the times of KLM UK, I'm not sure if they still fly to LBA now.

Thanks again and regards, Alex.

I had one of my best time there!

Enjoy every second of it!

All the best!

Nicolas

PS: the halls in southampton are also just down the approach to SOU, made my stay there even better!

Indeed I forgot KLM! As long as the ticket doesn't cost more than 100 euros single, I will certainly fly with them back to Brussels! F70+F50 would be new to me as well!

They r small and narrow + small seat pitch! So nice to try but wouldn't want to fly everyday with them!

Lucky Vinnie-Winnie. The ERJ135 a superb plane, although you have to watch your head if you are anything above 1.70 metre. Comfortable seats on top of that.

How was breakfast? Cold or hot? British airlines have a reputation to maintain!

Oh come on, you know exactly what I mean. Anyway, a few more words about it. Brussels is definitely a major European city, and well, Leeds maybe not as major as Brussels. But with MAN being located close, and bmi not being known for routes like these, I have to say that yes, I was surprised they fly this route - so what's the problem?  Confused

Congratulations!

I'm at the University of Leeds too, and I have flown into LBA a couple of times from LHR (I just wish I could fly from LGW - far more convenient).

Its interesting to read a report about the BD Regional flights I see so frequently over my residences.

That isn't a bad fare you got, because BD Regional are often extremely overpriced. I wanted to go from LBA to EDI at one point and they wanted over 100. It would've been almost cheaper to go LBA - LHR - EDI.... crazy!

It will be interesting to see what happens to BD Regional at LBA in the future. I see they have recently dropped two or three routes.
Next flights: LGW-LBA-LGW, LHR-SIN-SYD, SYD-BKK-LHR, LGW-GRO, GRO-CIA, CIA-MAD, MAD-LGW

Lol are you a member of the transport society as well fellow A-netter?

Great Uni shame I am supposed to be a boring post-grad now  Wink What do you do here exactly?

You got a point though I wouldn't call Man and Leeds that close! But they seem to have made it work and yields must probably terrific!

For Christmas I am probably going to fly LBA-AMS with Jet2, then Thalys to Brussels! And back to Leeds through Man! Should be interesting as well!

Very nice report!  Smile The ERJ-135 really is a nice aircraft to fly on - as long as you are a dwarf.  Wink
