AMS-ORD-PHX On United Airlines

Sun Oct 15, 2006 4:55 pm

United Airlines # 909
AMS-ORD
sched. Departure 11:05 am, actual 11:01am
sched. Arrival 1:12 pm, actual 12:49 pm
Seat 26F

After a week in Amsterdam, It was time to go back home to the USA. I didnt want to leave, I fell in love with the city. Great people, great food, great everything. Will be back again soon!!!!! I left my hotel in the Jordaan at about 7:30 am for Centraal Station to take the train over to Schiphol. Got there at about 8:40, but the United check-in didnt open until 9:05. So I just walked around for a couple of minutes.

United Check-in area, not very busy.

When the counters open it took about 15 minutes to pass through. I was offered an Economy Plus seat for around 70 euro, but I declined. I was given seat 26F, a window so I was happy. Went down to have my passport checked and then into the departures hall. I was getting a bit hungry so I stopped at McDonalds to get some breakfest and my fix of OJ. I also parked it next to the window and saw this beauty:

KLM 777, PH-BQA.

After I was finished, I headed down the departure corridor to the G Concourse and had some alright views:

Flight 909 was due to leave out of gate G5, but she wasnt there yet. The UA 777 (flight 946) that came in from IAD earlier was still there, but being readed to be toed to the remote stand. The US 762 heading to PHL was at the gate next to ours.

Very sharp looking IMO

Walked down aways and saw CO103 bound for EWR.

By this time it was about 10:00am and I headed for my gate. I was asked a few questions about what I was bringing back into the states and then I was screened again before going into the gate area. Not a big deal, they were just doing their job. So I then went to go sit by the window for awhile. Eventually the flight from ORD lands and pulls up to G5. She was in the new colors, so again I was happy!

RE: AMS-ORD-PHX On United Airlines

Sun Oct 15, 2006 5:52 pm

Boarding started at around 10:35. It was very smooth, and I was called quickly because of being in seating area 2.

More of our 767-300 from the gate, before I boarded.

So I settled into seat 26F. My new home from the next 8.5 hours.

After about 20 minutes the boarding door was closed and we where pushing back. Heres another look at the US 762 heading to PHL, right about the time we left.

After a short taxi, to the runway. We waited for a Tunisair 737, then a Onur A300, and we where on the active. Long line for takeoff:

We made our way up and went into the layer of clouds not to long after liftoff.

Now it was time to sit back and relax for the next 8 hours and 27 min. I had chosen to watch Pirates of the Caribbean "The Curse of the Black Pearl" or somthing of that nature. It was alright, pretty entertaining. Now I know that UA's IFE isnt the best in the world, but for me it does just fine. One or two movies and the rest of the flight is on airshow. During the middle of the flick the fa's came around with hot towels and then the lunch service began. Either chicken, or pasta. I went with the chicken. Sorry I absolutly forgot to take a picture of it until it was being taken away. But it was very good. It came with some vegitables, a salad, and a roll, with some crackers to. And for desert some strawberry icecream. It was actaully very good!! Well done UA, once again.

After the meal, and the movie I switched to Airshow for awhile:

Another beverage service came at this time. I took a Pepsi, my second of the flight. Yet another reason why I fly UA, PepsiCo products.

Cabin from my seat:

Now we are nearing Greenland and I was hoping for some nice shots. As we passed the coast this is what I saw, and it was beautiful:

After hitting land again over Canada to my dissapointment we also hit a cloud wall, so I desided to get some sleep.

Cabin shot from the rear of the aircraft before I tried to sleep:

Over central Michigan we started our desent into ORD. It took about 40 min. It was rather bumpy I might add, but nothing the 763 couldnt handle.

Approching ORD, some pretty fall colors down there:

UA 744, upon our arrival at ORD

After our arrival at ORD we proceded to gate M20 in the International Terminal 5. Customs was a breeze. The bags however took a long time to reach the terminal. We waited there for atleast 30 min. before they started coming out. I am sure glad that I didnt need to make a tight connection. The US Customs agent asked me what I was all bringing into the country and I told him Cheese, Chocolate, Model Airplanes, and Tshirts. And to this he remarked "ok your fine" and he took my Customs form and off I went to Terminal 1. Concourse B.

United Airlines Flight #1495 Operated by TED.
Sched Departure 3:15 pm (actual 3:13pm)
Sched Arrival 5:06 pm (actual 5:01)
Seat 19C

Had pleanty of time to wonder around at ORD. Our gate, B21 was empty when I arrived there. So I parked by the window to watch some of the arrivals. IB 340, AA777, UA777, and countless 757s of both UA and AA, and AA M80s. Nothing to special. At about 2:45 boarding was called. Again in seating sections. Also noted that they needed 4 people to give up their seats and go out on a later flight through DEN into PHX. UA was offering a free roundtrip ticket in the US48 for this. I desided to go for it but they ended up not needing anyone to give up thier seats. Bummer!

This flight was nothing special a normal TED operated flight. Sorry I dont have more to report about this but I fell asleep just after takeoff to just before landing, I was very tierd!!!. The flight time ended up being just over 3 hours. At any rate, well done TED!!!

Yet again a nice flight with UA.

Thank you for reading. Keep in mind this was my first report. Any suggestions are welcome. I hope you enjoyed reading it!!!!

Thanks

Hi, very nice trip report...and great pics. You got to check out lots of interesting airplanes in AMS apparently.
I love UAs 767s for transatlantic, for the 2 3 2 configuration mostly.

Does UA offer all Y pax an upgrade to Y+ for 70 euros or do you have a fare that allows it ?

cheers again

Thanks for sharing your great trip-report: loved your pictures, especially the ones of Greenland and the landing sequence at ORD.
Good to know, you loved the city and airport of AMS: yeah, in the morning you'll typically see lot's of different airlines; to judge by the long line for take-off, you used runway 09 for departure  Smile
What will those 70 Euros give you more (with regard to service and seat-pitch) than the regular Economy ?
Seems, UA had a good load on the Transatlantic flight, despite the competition of KLM on this route...

Hope to see more trip-reports in the future...
don't throw away tomorrow !

I don't really understand the Y+ product on UA. OK, it's great if you are elite, or full fare Y or are a member of "ameniti" (or whatever it is). But, I've been offered Y+ via easy check-in for $75, been given a seat if I ask, and then just handed a BP for Y+ too. Seems that there really is no consistency . . . .

Nice report. I didn't know UA offered seat-back IFE in their 767s. Anyone know if all their wide bodies are equipped with it?

In my opinion AMS is probably the best European airport offering views after clearing security. Tip for your next trip to A-dam....visit the panorama terrace. On a nice day it's great for spotting and as far as I know entrance is still free.

Nice report. I still believe that the old US colors(Dark blue) were much better than the new ones.

Great report dude.

I still find it amazing 757 are now being used across the ocean haha.

Sounds like UA did you well.

I really want to visit AMS myself.

Weird to go from a widebody to a small single aisle?

The internationally configured 767/777's do - the 747's don't have it in Y.

There are also domestic versions of the 767/777 (mainly to Hawaii) that do not have PTV's.

I was able to go there for an afternoon. It was great, and the resturant was nice too. Here are some pics from that if you are interested:

Very sharp looking IMO

I saw a US 762 in new colors at PHL in late August, heading for BCN. Nice paint job, as compared with the A330 I flew on to FCO..  Sad

Good report, I flew the AMS-ORD segment earlier this year in J and also felt that it was a little bumpier than nnormal during hte descent.

Great report and awesome pictures. I will be on that flight (AMS-ORD) on Oct. 27. Hope to get that window seat on the right and see Greenland. Just to bad it isn't a 777. Good you liked Amsterdam !!

Cheers.
