RAF Museum Hendon + LHR-MUC On LH - Pics!

Thu Nov 09, 2006 6:38 am

As promised, I have now written my report about my trip to RAF Museum Hendon and the LHR-MUC flight on LH.

RAF Museum Hendon can be reached with the London tube (station Colindale), followed by a bit of walking. Unfortunately, when I was there, it was already quite late and I did not have as much time as I had wanted. Also, due to the darkness, I couldn't take that many photos. But here are a few samples.

If you can't guess due to the darkness of the picture, this is the mighty Avro Vulcan !

Now I admit this picture does not show very much, but maybe with a bit of imagination, you will see the Vulcan's weapon's bay. The TV that can be seen at its end illustrates its size. Indeed very impressive !

Next to it, the was a Blue Steel nuclear armed missile shown.

Avro Lancaster:

A Tornado, IIRC a GR1B version:

An EH101:

A British naval F4 Phantom, with RR Spey engines I think:

A BAC Lightning (sorry for bad quality):

During my visit to London, I also visited Science museum. The collection of aircraft engines there is just unbelievable ! Also, there are interesting aircraft, such as the Vickers Vimy, which first flew over the Atlantic, and an early HS125. Currently, a detailed portrait of the Spitfire can be seen, with a disassembled aircraft being shown. But if you want to see this yourself, better check if it's still there.

Date: November 3
Departure: scheduled for 07:20, delayed by some 30 minutes
Arrival: scheduled for 10:05, delayed by some 15 minutes
Load: less than 30%
Seat: changed so often during the flight, but always window
Aircraft: A320-200

We took the earliest Heathrow Express, leaving Paddington station at 05:10. We arrived on time 15 minutes later. But the fare (14,5 Pounds per adult, single journey) is simply a rip-off.

Check in was fast as there were no queues. But then came security. Dozens of BAA employees were standing around, shouting instructions related to liquids in hand luggage, which were still FORBIDDEN AT ALL. The queue was amazingly long, but at least it moved quite fast. Shoes had to be removed.

Boarding time eventually came. We boarded and prepared for the flight.
And then the captain spoke to us: "Dear passengers, the winter has arrived at MUC, playing havoc on the schedules there. Our departure will be delayed by an hour, but maybe less if we get a better slot here at LHR. Make yourself comfortable." WTF??? It was snowing in MUC ? Oh well, I thought, what can I do. As the aircraft was quite empty, I changed my seat. Many passengers had a row for themselves. Eventually, we got an earlier slot and started taxi. here are some pics:

LH A306 being pushed back:

LH A321 at the gate next to us:

LX A321:

Big and small BA aircraft:

Here are some other pics, with Kenyan Airways aircraft and takeoff with water running off the window:

The seat pitch. I'm 1.85m / 6ft 2in and it was comfortable, better than on my transatlantic flights on LH !

Picture after takeoff and central London:

The flight was smooth. The meal differed in being a cheese sandwich instead of ham. The chocolate bar was also missing. On the drink service, the FA overlooked me; he later apologised and I got my orange juice.

Some cloud formations:

An unknown airport, maybe in France. Somebody know which one it is ?

FRA ! (Well, at least partly.):

A cold Bavaria:

Clouds seen while banking:

Landing !

Immigration was a breeze, but waiting for the luggage took a while. I also grabbed a printed MUC winter timetable, just ask at any information booth.

Our car was partly covered with snow, and as that was unexpected, we had to clean it with our bare hands.  cold

I hope you enjoyed reading this TR. Comments, suggestions and questions are welcome.
