GRB-MSP-PHX: NW DC-9, 757-300.

Mon Nov 20, 2006 12:37 pm

After a nice weekend up north visiting family it was time to head back to the desert, and I cant say that I wasnt looking forward to being in the nice warm weather again.

Northwest Airlines # 1527 13 November 2006
Depart GRB 9:00, Actual 9:06 Gate B3
Arrive MSP 10:17, Actual 10:10 Gate F7
Load 100%
Seat 09-A
DC-9-40, N754NW

I woke up at about 4:30am to get ready, and because I couldnt really sleep anymore. I took care of the usual things: showered, got dressed, brushed my teeth etc..... We were eventually out the door at 6:50am. We had a bit of a drive ahead of us, this is why we left so early. We got to GRB at around 7:45am and I made my way to the NW check in counters where I used the self-service kiosk. The day before I purchased a coach-choise or whatever they call them off the nwa.com for the MSP-PHX leg. It spit out my boarding passes for both flights and I was on my way. It was nice not having to check a bag since I was just carrying on. Me and my aunt went up to the security check-point and sat down and talked for awhile since there wasnt any line at all.

A shot of the terminal before going gateside:

After thanking my Aunt for having me and the usual goodbye stuff I went through security which was a breeze. I made sure that the TSA agents saw my ziplock back with my liquids and its wasnt a big deal since they are all under 3oz. I then made my way to gate B3.

Empty Terminal:

To my surprise there was a large amount of people around the gate. I found a seat and began to read.

View from my seat in the terminal:

I then looked out the window to see a small bizjet flying over the runway at maybe 500-600 ft. and with its gear down. I knew that there must be a problem, and about 10 min. later the same plane flew the length of the runway again this time maybe 300 ft. And there where alot of people and airport officals outside looking at it:

The bizjet ended up landing fine and it didnt seem like whatever went wrong was a big deal, thank god. Better to be safe than sorry. We started boarding at about 8:40am and I made my way on the plane. It took about 15 min. to get everyone onboard. We pushed back right on time and made our way to the runway. We took off behind a UA CRJ that was headed to ORD, and this was the only other pax plane on the ground with us. Not a very busy airport up there in GRB, but none the less very nice. We took off and made our way to a crusing alt. of 33,000 ft. This was a very short 47 min. jont over to MSP. Its always a pleasure to fly on those old DC-9s, oh and can anyone tell me when NW will be getting rid of them???? lol.

Taken during boarding, great Wisconsin weather isnt it? BRRRRRRR

Cabin Shot from seat 09-A:

Making our way to 33,000 ft:

Upon arrival at MSP, I made my way to the Obervation Deck on the other side of the airport. I always love connecting in MSP is a very nice airport and offers good spotting from the terminal.

Observation Deck, poor little US Airbus:

Now there isnt much to report from my layover. It was long but it was nice because I was able to spot and take my time and get somthing to eat. Here are some pics I took over the course of my layover:

Queen of the skies, headed to NRT:

I really like the winglets on the 757, seen here heading to DTW:

Wont get to see these for very much longer. I remember when I had the chanse to fly on one of these beasts, will never for get it. Long live to DC-10!!!! Thanks for all the great years. Heading to HNL:

Another winglet 757, looks great:

Here she is heading off to sunny HNL:

I was surprised to see so many 753s, given that they only have 16 or so in the fleet:

Now im jealous, I was in Amsterdam about a month ago and loved it. I would have loved nothing more that to go back. But sooner or later I will be back to AMS. And I would suggest that anyone who has had an interest to see it, you need to!!!!!:

Now here is where it gets interesting.

Northwest Airlines # 113 13 November 2006
Depart MSP 2:20pm, Actual 6:15pm Gate G16
Arrive PHX 4:33pm, Actual 8:18pm Gate 25
Load about 95%
Seat 40-A EXIT.
757-300 N585NW/N586NW

It was about 3:45pm and the plane had not arrived at the gate yet, and it was starting to get packed. 4:00pm rolls around, boarding time passes and still no plane. The gate agent comes on and says that we going to be about 30 min. leaving because the plane is arriving late from Hawaii via the west coast. No big deal right? Its only a half hour. Not!!!! So the plane arrives and everyone gets off and they end up turning it around very quickly:

They start the boarding procedure and so on. I get on the 753 and settle into my seat. 40-A on the NW 753 is very nice, and worth the $15.00usd they charge for it 24 hours before departure.

Very good legroom:

Lav:

We push back about 45 minutes late. And we sit, and sit, and sit, and sit until the pilot comes on and says that we will need to return to the terminal because the temerature control for the cabin is not working, and they are going to get MX out there to try to fix it. And we will remain on the plane.

Pushing back:

Seattle Seahawks 757:

NW A330.

Making our way back to the terminal:

Cant get enough of those NW A330s:

Mx figures out that we are not going to be flying N585NW today. So the pilot comes on and says that we will be getting off of this aircraft and they need to find a new one. But to stay in the gate area. So that is what I do. The gate agent, still at G16 btw comes on and says they found a replacement and it will be there from the hanger shortly. I was hoping for maybe a DC-10 or A330, but it was another 753, this time N586NW. So we board again and wait, and wait, and wait yet again. And then the pilot comes on and says that we will have to make our way back to the gate because they dont have the log books for this airplane. So we do that, and by this time its dark out so I didnt take anymore pics, sorry. We eventually get the books and make our way to takeoff. Once airborn the pilot says that we will be taking a more southern Route than normal because of weather. We climbed to 35,000ft. and were inflight for 3 hours and 10 min. because of the souther course and a little bit of a head wind. It was bumpy as usual landing in PHX, those of you who have been to PHX you know what I am saying. It is like DEN, or LAS. Again, it was dark and I feel asleep so I dont have any pics from this leg. Sorry. But I can tell you that I bought a snack box for $5usd and it was okay, not very good tho.

All in all it was fine, I didnt really need to be anywhere so the delay wasnt a big thing. I ended up getting a $35.00usd Ecert for the troubles. I will continue to fly NW, but I dont really have a choise since I will be living in GFK next year!!!!!

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed my report.

Great report, thank you for sharing! I transferred at MSP this summer, and really enjoyed the observation deck! Although I prefer DTW, MSP is a very nice place to transfer, considering its size.

When an aircraft does a couple fly-by's like that, it usually means he has an unsafe landing gear indication on his instrument panel, and he wants ATC as well as airline and airport operational personnel to visually check the position of the landing gear as he flies by.

Nice report, thanks!

The 330 in NW c/s looks just superb!

It's such a shame that the observation deck is airside, I'd love to spend a day there Sad

Nice! I like being able to see inside the terminal at GRB - I've always wondered what those smaller Midwest airports look like, since I've only ever flown out of MSP from that area. Thanks for all the cabin shots, too! There are no NW 757 cabin pics on A.net and very few NW DC-9 cabin pics on A.net either, so its nice to see what they look like, especially the DC-9 which I have yet to fly. Too bad for your delay! The worst is when you board and have to go back to the gate.

Are you sure the snackbox was $5. It was $3 when I last flew NW, but that was back in January and it could have gone up for all I know.

Sounds like a long day in MSP. Lucky you didn't have young kids with you that would have made it really long. Leaving the gate without the logbook, that sounds like a first, never heard that one before. From your pictures of GRB looks like the basic layout that was in the 70's when I flew North Central via GRB to MQT.

Get on one soon, NW only has 8 DC-9-40s left in the fleet. I plan on taking a flight over to PIT in Dec. to ride on one.

Hey dude, nice pics of Austin Straubel (GRB). The terminal is nice isn't it? They did a good job of rebuilding Concourses A and B, better than that moldy nasty terminal they had before. Sounds funny, I actually enjoy the smell of the bathrooms there, dont know what they put in the air. I will have to fly back to GRB sometime, nice place there. BTW, off the topic, where did u get the birkenstocks? I have been needing a new pair but its impossible to find them down here in GPT.

It is actuall on the D concourse (just look at a map of the MSP terminal), just opposite of the Quizino's Subs place. It is a bit hard to find now and not very well marked off. But it is worth it because there is never very many people up there.

Very lucky are you, it is an awesome city with awesome people. You will love it. Be sure to try to make a report if you can. Can I ask what your routing will be?

I was very surprised also. It is actually very very nice. Better than the old shotty terminal. But it seems like they almost have to much terminal now for the amount of flights they see daily.

Just at a local mall in Scottsdale, They have a Birkenstock store there. They cost an arm and a leg but they are the best shoes ive ever had and are worth every penny.

Great report & pictures! Nice to see some pics of GRB. How many gates do they have in total there now? Did you see any other aircraft besides the UA CRJ?
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

I didnt, besides a NW ARJ on final before we took off. I would guess that they have maybe 6-8 gates???

Thanks for the info. I will make sure to look out for this next time I make it to MSP sometime next year.

This is my second time going to AMS. And I agree people are nice.

My routing is ORD-AMS on KLM and AMS-DTW-ORD on NW. And of course I will be doing a report as I will be on my first 744.  hyper

I've started to fly from GRB as my folks have recently relocated there. The new concourses are very, very nice. Though it does seem they have twice as many gates as they will ever need. I've only been there to see the new terminal though. What was the old one like? anyone have pictures?

Nice report and pictures by the way.
