Oasis Hong Kong: LGW-HKG-LGW

Thu Dec 14, 2006 4:05 am

08 707 - LGW>HKG - Friday 8th December 2006

B-LFB

After a quick hop from Manchester on a Jet2.com flight, I was in Gatwick. With no bags to check-in, I collected my boarding pass with seat 31K (pre-booked with online check-in). 31K is the window seat on the first row of Oasis Economy.

Security was busy and after about 30 minutes, I was free to roam airside. It was nice to have an arcade around so time could pass... I went on a combat flight sim and it lasted about 30 seconds as i crashed into the sea.  hissyfit

The screens changed the flight status to "Go to Gate 34". With nothing to do, I made my way to the gate which was quite a fair distance away. Boarding was to follow about 10 minutes after sitting down.

Boarding was quick and efficient. A few moments later I settled down in my seat next to a middle aged man and his mother. I noticed they spoke the same Chinese dialect as i do (Hakka) and I started talking to them. Big grin

The captain came on the public announcement announcing the usual stuff and soon we were on our way. (After a manual safety demo of course).

Take off was uneventful and so was the rest of the flight, to be honest. Although i had a strange mode of sleep. It felt as if i was awake, but 6 hours had passed when I looked at the time. My personal TV screen was not working which was disappointing. The crew reset it several times with no look. Oh well!

Meals on board were standard but in small quantities. I would tell you what i ate but i forgot! (There are pictures in the video). Water, tea, coffee and a small pot of orange juice is free of charge. However all other drinks and snacks are at a starting price of 15HKD/1GBP.

Soon later we started our decent into HK which was yet again uneventful. Landing was very smooth. (Shown on the video). Music played on the roll-out and taxi which was a nice touch.

We parked on the South side on the 'man's leg'. It took me a few minutes to get the packed auto-train back to the main body of the terminal. I was surprised to see immigration so empty! I was out in a flash with no baggage to collect and was picked up by my sister and brother-in-law whom had flown BA Club World on the Wednesday before me.

08 700 - HKG>LGW - Wednesday 13th December 2006

B-LFA

On arriving at the airport on the hotel bus I found that the time was only 9pm on Tuesday. My parents, auntie, cousin and sister were flying standby on BA. They checked-in quickly leaving plenty of time before departure to have a coffee in that coffee shop i forgot the name of.

They left me landside as their flight was soon to depart. Oasis still hadn't opened check-in until around 10.30pm. The queue was slow moving. After 40mins queuing up, i checked in one bag and got the seat i request (31K again) on the online check-in facility.

When I went airside, all the shops began to close  Sad So i headed to gate 23 and waited for an hour or so. Boarding was quick and soon i was on the plane. I noticed two relatively young children sat in 31H and 31J who looked disappointed to see me. As i shuffled passed them to my 'window' seat, they asked me if i would swap. So being the nice guy i am, i swapped. Already being in a depressed mood from leaving HK, i felt this flight was going to be a bad one.

After departing Hong Kong on rwy 07R, I moved to seat 31H as the kids were getting annoying. Dinner was salty! Sorry, i changed the topic to dinner too quick. Anyway, dinner was salty. I watched Oceans Twelve on the IFE system and soon fell asleep. With no one in the seat next to me, i was able to stretch out. After having a gorgeous night sleep, i got woken up by the children once again. I looked at my watch and i was so annoyed to find that only 30minutes had passed. Strange!!!

Getting annoyed, i walked to the back of the aircraft and stood for about 2hrs... reflecting on my trip. So depressed!

With 6 hours to go, i went back to sleep and woke up in the middle of them serving breakfast. The attractive FA (NB: female) noticed my awaking and asked me what I'd like to eat. So i told her to choose for me. I ended up getting dim sum Big grin

Descending into Gatwick was uneventful, followed by a straight in approach to London Gatwick's RWY26L. Landing was again very smooth.

I went to the flight deck when we got on the gate and took a few pics. The pilots were all old and ex-BA. Hmmm.

Caught my Jet2.com flight back to Manchester where i arrived home 2 hours later than the rest of my family who went via LHR with BA.

Summary

Service: Good
Food: Minimal but nice
Comfort: Ok
Punctuality: Ok
Inflight Entertainment: Ok

Overall, Oasis is a good airline for the prices they offer. It's like flying with CX but without the IFE. I recommend anyone considering flying to HK to take Oasis. Especially Business as it was nearly empty on both my flights.

I apologise for the poor quality of this trip report but i am still jet lagged!

Check out this rushed video i made:

The price of the tickets were £300 return (tax inclusive). Then £50 for Jet2.com.

The loads in Y were full on the way to HK but around 75% full on the return.

Nice report, this is the first time Ive seen in ANY trip report: Pics of FA's doing the service. Thats a nice add. Gives us an idea how different things are done with each airline. Id like to see more of that, too! The FA's are the heros of our trips!

Great trip-report; the video was nice in that it's showing the service done by the F/A and also some food-pictures...UKL300 for a return incl. tax is a bargain IMHO...thanks for sharing this 'unknown' airline  Smile

Nice report, tks.

I think this is the second Oasis report i've read, both similar in content/service.

I question the comment comparing Oasis to CX, I've not flown CX but I doubt they can be considered as being that similar.

Any reason why you did dot fly BA with the rest of the family?

Tks again.

Rgds

Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 9):

I flew CX in the summer to HK and I found that they are similar to O8 in that the crew are always smiling and attentive. The food is similar but in smaller quantities. The difference is the lack of "CX Studio", as O8 just have a few channels which are the same for inbound and outbound.

I didn't fly with the rest of my family because my sister couldn't by me ID80 or ID70 tickets (whichever one it is). The reason being the flights were too full and a staff's 'brother' ticket couldnt be bought.

Informative TR !
I casually was looking today into using O8 for pleasure-trip to HK in the next months and found their deals on Business Class fares outstanding (about 1100 GBP return).

However I had to realize that I have almost nil options to fly into LGW from airports around me, apart from not too well timed 4U HAM to LGW, which would require a 2.5 hour trip from where I live.
Changing airports in LON is a no-no for me.

Seems I will have to wait for O8 to open MXP before I can use them, as I do not have flights from HAJ to CGN or BER and I hate to drag my suitcases onto the train.

Nice TR, as a frequent LHR-HKG traveller myself always wondered what service Oasis is offering along witheir cheap prices. From the sound of it it could be value for money.

However I have been doing some price comparison with O8 against major schedule airlines to HKG and for me living in the midlands having to travel further to Gatwick, major airlines remain a better option for me going from LHR.
