New SQ FC, SIN-HKG,777-300ER(photos)

Thu Dec 21, 2006 10:10 am

December 2006
SQ 862
9V-SWB
Boeing 777-300ER
Dep SIN :- 11.00am
Arr HKG :- 14.45pm
Seat 2A

After a long over-night flight into SIN. I had about 3 hours to waste before my next flight to HKG. I could have taken an earlier flight to HKG, but the lure of riding on the new 777-300ER was too much.
The Singapore First Class Lounge was relatively quite.
Got myself a quite corner with a few newspapers, went to the buffet area and ordered a hot congee (rice porridge) with garnishes from the chef on duty at the bar area.

This Lounge is one of Singapore Air’s weakest points (especially when you compare it to Cathay’s lounge in HKG). It feels very 1980s and desperately needs to be renovated! I hear that a new terminal shall be opening soon. Hopefully this shall solve the problem.

I got a bit bored and decided to wander down to the gate area to do some plane spotting and window-shopping.

The plane is due to leave from gate F59, one of the gates that would have required a long walk from the lounge.

First and Business were called to board first via the first pier.
On boarding the FAs took my jacket and drinks order. I had a simple orange juice; then, the featured SQ non-alco cocktail of the month, a ‘Orange Cooler’.
I see that all the glass-ware, plates and cutlery have been up-dated and re-designed.

All of the 8 First Class seat were taken .
Menus, socks and slippers were handed out.
Here are a few pics of the seats:-

A view from my seat, 2A:-

A view through to the Business Class cabin:-

Xmas decorations were hanging through out the cabins:-

We had an Australian captaining this flight today, he did the usual crew introductions and then gave us flight information.
Take-off was on time.

Changi airport with Singapore in the background:-

More views of the cabin:-

There were no over-head storage bins in the FC section.
The only storage available was here:-

The vanity mirrors at each side of the lCD screen:-

The seat and IFE controls:-

The large LCD screen itself:-

Nice to see the toilets have been re-designed and are a lot more spacious:-

Lunch service orders were taken and I was really disappointed that my choice of the ‘Chinese Banquet’ was not available due to over-demand. Therefore, I had the western meal.
The red wine I chose was a Chateau Cos d’Estournel 1999.

Cold platter of malossol caviar with lobster-mango salad.

Beef consommé with ravioli and vegetable julienne.

Belgian endive with baby spinach (with a French dressing).

Dried scallop mousse.

Tournedos of beef in roasted shallot jus, asparagus with Hollandaise sause and mashed potatoes.

The beef was perfectly cooked:-

Pumpkin puree with coconut ice-cream.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b259/xtra1/dessin-hkg.jpg
I didn’t part-take in the cheese or fruit courses.
Instead I just had a simple coffee.

Arrival into HKG was slightly early at 14.38 and my bags were one of the first to be out. Took the fast rail link and was in central HKG 15.20.

Verdict of this New First Class:-

Seat:
To be honest, I prefer the old FC seating.
(Although I did not try this new seat in bed mode, with the back flipped down). The new seat felt uncomfortable in the normal, day mode. The leathered seat cushion was too hard and narrow. It actually felt like sitting on a bench. It seems the available seat width is a bit of a waste of space. The whole cosseted, soft, coccoon feel has disappeared.
The surrounding seat superstructure also made for a less spacious feel.
The large, in your face LCD screen gave the illusion of a tighter pitch.
With the back down( n sleep mode); it seems as if you still had to sleep in a diagonal set position.

IFE/LCD screen:
The screen has a shiny, almost mirrored surface. Everything is reflected off it, watching films was difficult. It is also really difficult spending hours seeing yourself sitting there ….reflected back!
There were also still a few obvious glitches with the IFE software.

Service:
The service, I felt was below the normal SQ standards. Maybe because of the unfamiliarity of the new plane; the FAs seemed forgetful and a bit rushed.
I also preferred the old designed plates and cutlery. The new plates are smaller and less grand.
The food was, as usual, out of Singapore; of the highest quality.

Quoting Xtra1 (Thread starter):

Agreed 100%. However, the present lounge has only recently been refurbished. I am not sure what the improvements are but I sure wasn't impressed with the lounge. But one would have to understand the infrastructural contraints of Changi T2 to realise that there is really nothing more they can do other than cosmetic enhancement. I am sure the new lounge at T3 will bring SQ back on par with her rival lounges in KLIA (MAS) and HKIA (CX).

On a side note, recent reviews of the TG lounge in Suvarnabhumi have been less than satisfactory. The latest issue of Business Traveller likens the lounge to a "fast food joint".

Quoting Xtra1 (Thread starter):
It actually felt like sitting on a bench. It seems the available seat width is a bit of a waste of space.

Now with the width so wide, I reckon you would have lost the usage of one of the armrest. Now you would have to choose the left or the right one. But remember, SQ is giving what the customer wants and through a thorough research, they probably arrived at this. Might not be what you think is comfy, but definitely an awesome improvement from the previous configuration.

Quoting Xtra1 (Thread starter):
The surrounding seat superstructure also made for a less spacious feel.

I would dare venture that EK's 345 private cabins in First Class would give the same illusion as well, though I have not had the priviledge to fly up front. The photograph do give the cabin a very cramped look as well. The same was said for the Sky Suites on the 744 after they were installed.

However, the REAL experience is for the passenger who is seated, not how cramped the cabin feels but how much space the seat seems to have.

Overall a great TR on the new First Class on SQ. I think you have the honour of being the first one to post it here! Congratulations!
Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

great report. The new seats look amazing. I am no expert but the seats may still be stiff but give them time to be "broken in" and hopefully they will be more comfortable in the future. The food looks pretty yummy too. Looking forward to future reports.

I must say that when I saw the SQ news release, my first thought was "This is not a seat! It's a sofa!" Good trip report, looking forward to hearing more reaction to the new SQ seats.

I had no idea that these new seats would be fitted with seat-belt air bags. But judging from the head strike distance from the seat to the desk in front, it makes sense.
Release your seat-belts and get out! Leave everything!

Big enough for two? If you get my drift.

Great report, I want to fly on SQ FC some day. Once I've got my own money to spend on lavish trips!

Great trip report!

I would love to be able to ride the 77W in F or J class! You are one lucky A.net member! It's a shame though that the day seat wasn't comfy.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the first report on the 777-300ER SQ first class!!!

I've been waiting for this!
I thought that the seat didn't look extremely comfortable when the press release came out, but i figured that I would wait and see what someone had to say about it... I guess I thought right.

Well I guess SQ will find out what people do and don't like about this and have that in their minds when they make their final touch ups on the A380 FC. (I'm sure that they are pretty much done, if not already with the seat)

nice report and great pictures!

Nice report and pictures.

I would be interested to hear about these new seats on a proper long haul segment. This would allow you to really test how the bed is for a sleeping overnight rather than just a short 3 hour hop, which doesn't really give you time to test it.

I agree with the comments about the SKL in SIN, it has fallen behind the competition now. The only redemming factor is the Dom !!.

Just to answer the few questions posed by ANITIX87:-

The SQ "Mix of the Month" is the " Orange Cooler" , and I quote from the SQ menu blurb:-
" Orange Cooler. A light tangy drink that stimulates the taste buds, created from orange juice and ginger ale with a touch of lime cordial."
The LCD Screen is 23-inch, high resolution widecreen.

Thanks for all the comments from you A.Net members.

More trip reports soon!

They also have a good drink in Raffles called 'Golden Spice', a 50-50 mix of ginger ale and pineapple juice.

Excellent report.

I just returned today from my first ever F class flights on SQ. I got to experience the SkySuites, which in my opinion were great. Looking at your pics, it does make the cabin look quite cramped, and very different from the airy feel on the 744. I guess because the new seat has a partial "wall" around it, where as the SkySuite only has the built up back, and a divider for those in the middle.

The new plates don't look all that great either. It may just be the angles of which you took the photos, but it appears that the distinctive stylized 'F' logo no longer takes pride of place on the top of the plates, side of glasses etc. I noticed on my recent flights that the flight attendants took great care when placing the china to make sure the 'F' was facing out, towards me. I agree that the old blue and gold china looked much better than this new stuff.

It is good to see, however, that the new china includes full size glasses now, not those petite airplane ones.

Once again, great report. Hope to see more.

Smile I Never been on board Singapore airlines, and may never do,but seeing those pics of inside of their new B773ER,tells me the first class section is second to none, and if i ever do get the chance to fly on SIA,i know what to expect, also i guess the rest of the service throughout the plane is A-one.
If SIA is gonna deliver food like that to me,i wouldn't eat anything before my flight. Question,is this sort of standards given on all their fleet of aircraft and is there much diffrence between the food in first class and the food in other classess?.

Just got home to Chicago. Took the 773ER from SIN to CDG this morning, and connected to UA for the last hop.

The new SQ business class seats are striking to look at, but actually feel a bit cramped when you're in them for 14 hours. The high partitions around each unit also make them feel tight, too, as someone already observed. One of the reasons the seats are so unusually wide is that in sleep mode you must lie on a bit of an angle, owing to some odd juxtapositions of the various electronic componets in the pod. You need the width to get comfortable, though I must say it wasn't that comfortable owing to a surprising lack of bed length in the lie-flat bed mode....good for Asians, but not for westerners.

In comparision, the (Virgin-designed) pods which Air NZ uses are far, far superior. I actually had an a-net picture which I showed the F/A's during the flight and they candidly agreed the Virgin/NZ pods are better.

The IFE is a bit upgraded, but it was already the best around. The food was pretty much the same; I couldn't see any major changes.

Still, all-in-all. a great service from a great airline, but it could have been even better. I hope they use this period to debug the interiors before they put them in their 380's.

By the way, it took me two whole weeks to work through the waitlist to get a confirmed seat. This plane has definitely got a following already. It was totally full!

The downside to which no one here has mentioned is that for both Business and First Class, one must get out of the seat, and flip the seat over to make it totaly flat. Gone are the days of lounging from a seated position into a flat bed like position at a touch of a switch. That is just stupid to do that.

Watch for Cathay Pacific's new Business and First Class seats when they are launched next month. The Business class seats are like Virgin's and Air NZ's with one added advantage. They do not need to be flipped over!

Must be pretty tough being able to use the armrests. Looks to me like you could fit three people in that seat.

The screens in Business Class are 17'' and the screens in First are a massive 23''. I can tell you that the 17'' screen is big enough and the 23'' one is just plain amazing especially when you are watching an action film, it feels like you are at the cinema. Big grin

Have you kissed a 777 today?
