UA SFO-ORD-SFO First 777 Trip!

Fri Jan 19, 2007 4:59 am

I just got back from a business trip to Milwaukee, but rather than flying with a connection in ORD, we simply flew to ORD and drove up.

I was particularly excited as this was my first time in a 777

Monday, January 15
United 843J (Why the "J" - even ATC refered to us as "United 843 Juliet Heavy")
SFO-ORD
Equip 777
Seat 41J (waaaaaaaay in the back)
Depart 1:50 on time Gate 84
Channel 9 = Yes
Depature Runway 1R
Arrived ORD - Delayed 835ish due to holding pattern
Arrival Runway - 9R
Arrival Gate C10

Got to SFO in plenty of time to grab a bite to eat post security - I had a burger from Lori's diner. Headed to the gate about 1:30 as they were boarding and eased our way to the back. The first class seats were awesome. I'm sure glad I wasn't stuck in middle middle. I didn't realize how high off the ground the 777 was. We pushed back on time and taxied out. The engines whined quite loudly and with out much delay roared down 1R and lifted off just before the 28's. The flight was pretty smooth - we hit a bump or two over the sierras and eased our way up to fl 370. The flight attendants were great - service was drinks and pretzles, water/coffee and than another drink service. They came by and talked to us quite a bit. Just before decent, they were handing out cookies that the FA's had brought on board and were trying to get rid of I think. We started a slow decent and then just east of Rockford we circled about 4 because they changed runways so we were vectored for 9R and we landed about 40 mins late and taxied to C10. Got our bags and drove up to MKE for a couple days of meetings etc.

Wednesday, January 17
United 155
ORD-SFO
Equip 757
Seat 20D
Depart 8:00PM (Delayed till about 8:20 due to MX) Gate B7
Channel 9 = (Was on for a few minutes after departure and then off)
Depature Runway not sure
Arrived SFO - 10:45
Arrival Runway - 28L
Arrival Gate 87

Again got to the airport in plenty of time for security and food. Boarded on time - load factore was about 75% and most middle seats empty. Just before push back they reopened the doors for MX to come look at something - and then closed up and pushed back. Service was average - no complaints with drinks/pretzels and then a couple water services. Channel 9 was turned off midflight for some reason and never came back on. The 757 was older and had the old interiors in it. Typical decent and landing into SFO.

I'm glad you got to experience the 777s on Domestic routes. I'm assuming it was a three class plane. Those first class seats are amazing!

Thanks for the report and hopefully you'll go in to a bit more detail next time.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Thanks for the feedback - for sure I'll try to add more detail in my next report. Yes, it was a 3-class. I didn't get a chance to grab the tail #  Sad

did you have any expectations towards the T7?
I did - and it was better than expected. My boss who flew with me just kept saying how amazing it is that something so big could get off the groud.

It was a great flight - United does have good service. The crew was pleasant. While it should be somewhat expected to receive good service - I think the way to the best service is being a respectful and courteous passenger - I always smile and am gracious for their service cuz I know their job is not easy.

Thanks for the nice trip report. I will never forget my first flight in av UA 777, the same route that you did actually. After a 9 hour flight from ARN, to board the 777 was like a dream come true, even though I was very tiered

I ask a FA about the tail number on both aircraft i flied, didn't expect to get it, but I did.

Quoting Mikesairways (Thread starter):
United 843J (Why the "J" - even ATC refered to us as "United 843 Juliet Heavy")

ATC adds a letter designator to a flight number when another airline has a plane with the same flight number near by. This ensures that there is no confusion for ATC or the pilot. If I remember correctly, I had a UA flight this past summer that did this.

Thank you for the trip report! It is always a pleasure to fly United. Ch 9 and Economy Plus are the best!
