Adam Air KI 982 Jakarta-Singapore

Tue Feb 06, 2007 3:57 am

Plenty of trips lately, might type another report or two, but I thought this one might be interesting considering the crash of PK-KKW on new year’s day etc. Unfortunately, no pictures, since the battery of my new camera died ¼ through the trip and I didn’t have the charger with me.

Booked the flight two days before departure on flyadamair.com, $37+tax – a bargain and a half for a last minute trip if you ask me. Online booking worked like a charm, not something you see on many Indonesian airlines.

Due to the recent huge floods in Jakarta, I left for the airport already at 3.30am in order to have a shot at the 6am Philippine Airlines flight in case of any last minute cancellation. Fellow A.netter HB-IWC told me the return from SIN had a gate assigned, so I was fairly sure the flight was going despite having been cancelled on February 2nd and 3rd.

A Bluebird taking a strange route (perhaps due to the floods) got me to Soekarno Hatta in around 30 minutes, and check-in for KI 982 wasn’t open yet. Counters 23-25 and gate D5 had been assigned, so I was relieved I didn’t have to fork out additional money for a PAL ticket, let alone full fare on the SQ morning flight. I was on a non-cancellable ticket from SIN to BKK so I absolutely had to get to Changi this morning.

Agents set up the check-in counters at around 5am – Adam uses their own laptops and printers like Jetstar in Singapore does. Adam Air “the boutique airlines” signs were placed on top of the counters, and some orange fake flowers were placed on the counters. A rather nice looking setup for a low-cost airline. I was assigned an aisle seat as requested, and I had to sign some form for the e-ticket/credit card payment.

Cleared immigration in no time at all, and grabbed four seats near gate D5 for some shut-eye before the security checkpoint opened. Cleared security at about 6.45am, and boarding started at about 7.10am. Perhaps a 60% load, we had a large group connecting from Singapore to somewhere and maybe an equal number of individual passengers.

The flight was operated by a 737-300 today; I believe 737-500 is usually the equipment. Was greeted by an Adam Angel or whatever they call them – must say all of the cabin crew (2 female, 2 male) were very friendly and the colourful uniforms looked fine. PK-KKZ has an all economy configuration of 148 blue leather seats – they were showing their age but not too shabby. I was glad to see I was assigned the exit row – moved to the window with no seat in front once boarding was completed. Got an emergency exit door opening speech from one of the F/As, don’t recall that happening on other Indonesian carriers. Usual safety demo followed.

Pushback was a minute early, and we took off without delay. Spotted two QF 743s and one SV 744 at the Hajj terminal. Service consisted of a snackbox – a bread roll, some cake and a cup of water. Managed some sleep after that with the great exit row legroom and decent recline. Descent into Changi soon started, and we landed about 15 minutes early.

Docked at gate C34 a few minutes later, the cheerful crew thanked me for flying Adam Air, and off to the transit counter I went to check in for my TG flight to Bangkok. Can’t really fault Adam for anything – working online booking, no problems with the e-ticket, smooth check-in and an on-time flight with friendly service. Unfortunately, I suppose there are other serious issues with Adam Air, as anybody who has read the SUB-MDC crash threads should know.

Hope you enjoyed although no pictures this time. The battery is fully charged for tomorrow’s GF/CX F flights though. Big grin

Hello, Lufthansa747,
thanx for posting.
Sure an aircraft with an interesting history on your flight.
Especially FlyAir had not the best reputation.
Good to read that Adam Air, in your case, works well.
Greetings,

It was done consistently in all my Batavia and Sriwijaya flights, all on the PNK-CGK vice versa and return routes.

Glad you made it safely and you are here today to write a trip report. Have you considered paying a bit more and knowing your life is not in danger?
I fly on almost anything, as you can see searching trip reports, but with Adam Air I'd at least want to know first what happend at New Years day and if it won't happen again.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Actually... I did a run on Lion sometime back just for the kicks to see how flying an "unsafe" airline really feels like. Somehow the thrill soon became a reality check once I boarded, when I realised that the MD80's PA system wasn't working, seatbelt "ping" inop, no safety check by cabin crew etc... Not to mention numerous delays without explanation.

After a while, it was not funny anymore and I was never so glad to be back on terra firma. Needless to say I am not rushing to fly any of these airlines anytime soon.
Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

Thankfully I didn't know the history/reputation when I flew - it looked like ex-BD inside the cabin.

Yeah... But I'd then have forked out for a hotel in SIN instead of going to CGK, so it was a no-brainer. Big grin

I figure the motorbike taxis in BKK are much more dangerous than any airline out there... And KI was missing from my flight log. Big grin

Cheers,

That was definately an interesting read. I have always wanted to know what Adam Air was like. I take it from your trip report there is nothing majorly wrong with flying Adam Air, at least not that you can see.

I can't wait to read this one, I have not flown GF in years.

Prior to the crash incident in Sulawesi, Adam Air is a proud recipient of CAPA's Low Cost Carrier of the Year award, surpassing the likes of AirAsia, Tiger Airways and Jetstar!
