PHX-MSP-PHX On US Airways (Day Trip)

Wed Feb 07, 2007 11:34 am

My dad had a lot of miles saved up with US Airways so we decided to use them for a day trip up to MSP.

Info on the outbound flight,
Date Feb 3rd 2007
Flight-US Airways 57
Scheduled 9:49AM-1:40PM
Actual 10:05AM-1:54PM
Seat 2D-First Class
Load Factor 100%
Aircraft N637AW A320-231
Flight time 2:49 at FL350

We arrived at Sky Harbor at 8:40 and made our way up to the security line, It was pretty long but we were able to use the First Class line this time which sped things up considerably. We made it thru security without setting anything off  relieved  . After security we went off to our departure gate B-6. We went and sat down to wait for them to start boarding. They never actually made a call for boarding, I looked over at the gate and all of a sudden every body was up at the gate getting on. But any-who we did get on the plane and took our seats (2C and 2D) in the First Class Cabin, the crew came around with drinks, I chose a water to start the flight with. All the seats in the F cabin were full. We pushed back and started to taxi for take-off, We used 7L today and were lucky in that we started to taxi at a very good time just before the big rush got going. We took-off around 10am a little behind schedule. And climbed quickly up to our cruising flight level of 350 and cruise speed of 450kts. Once up to flight level they started the movie (A good Year) I can't comment on it as I didn't really watch it, Instead I opted to play my DS and listen to my iPod. We were also offers food on this flight, Yes we actually got free food! The option was either a Cold pasta salad with shrimp or a Chicken salad, Mm Yum  Yeah sure. I opted for the Chicken salad. It was Okay but nothing to special, However it did have a very tasty cheese cake to go with it. I was just pleased to have food on the flight and not pay for it! The rest of the flight was pretty uneventful, Though about two hours into the flight some generator went out, So all the lights and the movie screens in the cabin went out, They got it running again just a few minutes later. the flight went by pretty quick and we started to descend into a Frigid looking -20 wind chilled Minnesota, in fact the captain said the air temp was -9! and with winds up to 30mph!  cold  we landed on the new runway 17/35 at about 2ish a little behind schedule but not by much. The US/HP flights from PHX and LAS used to arrive at gate C-9 but now because of the merger these flights park at one of the US Airways gates. We blocked at gate E4 at 1:54pm local time. Also something interesting about N637AW plane is that after flight 57, it was to fly to LAS as flight 434, it pushed back and taxied out and so I thought it went and took off, But when we came back to the E gates a little later in the afternoon, There was N637AW again! we couldn't believe it! it was sitting on the tarmac waiting for a gate to park at. So we went and walked around some more and took pictures and then when we came back it was parked at E3! later i found out it was cancelled due to some engine problem. does anybody know what went wrong with N637AW on Feb 3rd?
Overall impression,
Crew 7/10 they did there job with a smile
Check-In we used the self check-in kiosk
Food 3/10 It was just a salad, with dry chicken
Overall I rate the entire flight a 9/10 Can't really complain about it

RE: PHX-MSP-PHX On US Airways (Day Trip)

Wed Feb 07, 2007 12:06 pm

After spending a fun 3 hours at MSP it was time to head to E-4 for our flight back to PHX.
Date Feb 3rd 2007
US Airways flight 300
Scheduled 5:10PM-7:03PM
Actual 5:52PM-7:16PM
Seat 2D First Class
Load Factor 100%
Aircraft N636AW A320-231

After a fun day at MSP it was time to fly back home to PHX.
we got to our gate around 4ish and our plane wasn't here yet, but it arrived just a few minutes later from LAS. boarding was started, It took a good 30-35 minutes at least to finish boarding, the FA comes on and says the delay in boarding was due too some extra passengers being put on this flight from the cancelled flight 434 to LAS.
Once boarding was completed we pushed back the crew did the safety video and engines were started up, with a lot of smoke I might add. we then made our way to runway 30R for take-off, Lift off was around 5:50pm, Right after take-off we make a sharp left turn out of MSP and continued to climb to FL340 and cruise speed of 456kts. Once we reached our cruising altitude the Movie started this time it was Man of the Year, Shortly after that the beverage and meal service began, I had a water to drink and then with dinner I had a diet coke. The dinner option for the flight was either a Spinach salad or a Chicken Pasta salad, I had the pasta salad (the last one left on the flight too) and it was actually pretty tasty, much better then the Chicken salad on the flight to MSP. after dinner the FA came thru and offered a slice of Strawberry Cheese Cake yummy , The crew was very good on this flight professional and attentive to the passengers needs. This flight was very uneventful. we began our decent into PHX and made a smooth landing on runway 26 at about 7:20ish and taxied to our gate.
Overall impression
Crew 9/10 good service and professional
Food 6/10 I though it was pretty tasty, though it would have been better hot.
Overall 10/10

They never actually made a call for boarding

Hey good to hear a good report.... as a gate agent I heard the above line ALL the time. Maybe it is just something with the mic's in PHX but we ALWAYS make boarding announcements. The way PHX sets the mic's up, the announcements don't carry to all of what could be considered the boarding area. It make me laugh when people sit in the boarding area the WHOLE time yet stillllll miss their flight, I don't understand how the rest of the plane gets on but not them! Anyway sorry to rant, I wasn't singling you out or anything, just gave me a good opportunity!  Smile

Anyway, awesome trip report, MSP just LOOKS cold!
