JFK-CDG (AF) And MAD-JFK (DL)

JFK-CDG
Air France Flight AF 007
Delta Air Lines Flight 8581
Scheduled Departure: 7:20pm
Actual Departure: 7:20pm
Scheduled Arrival: 8:45am
Actual Arrival: 8:32am

Boeing 777-200 F-GSPB

Two weeks ago, I flew to Paris to start a 10 day trip that included several days in Spain. Check in at Terminal 1 was a breeze. No long lines. No major problems. We departed from Gate 10, one of the furthest in the main terminal. This was the first day of operations for Swiss International Airlines at T1 so they were having some festivities ahead of the Zurich departure.

Boarding was a bit chaotic as rows were not really well announced, but we got to our seats just fine. I was struck at how clean the plane was on the inside. This is not a new 777. It has been in service with AF for almost 9 years. The cabin was spotless. The new premium cabins were installed. Plane smelled fresh. Crew were very polite, good looking, and quite happy to attend to the 200+ pax in the economy cabin I was seated in.

Pushback was on time. We had a slow and deliberate taxi to the runway and took off around 8:15. The flight was to be a short 6 hour, 5 minute journey to CDG. The AVOD system seemed new. It had on screen touch commands and it worked well. Good selection of movies and other stuff. Food was quite good.

We landed 13 minutes ahead of schedule and taxied to a parking area and had to be bussed to Hall 2. We spent about 20 minutes navigating around the CDG airfield which was cool, but a bit tiresome. If I had to connect at CDG I might not choose AF given the hassles.

All in all, excellent flight. Clean plane, outside too! Nice crew. Smooth flight. I would definitely fly AF again longhaul.

MAD-JFK
Delta Air Lines Flight DL 127
Scheduled Departure: 10:30am
Actual Departure: 10:17am
Scheduled Arrival: 1:40pm
Actual Arrival: 2:10pm
Boeing 767-300ER

Check in was relatively simple. The agent accidentally tagged our bags with BusinessElite stickers since we got moved into the business class line. Boarding was efficient for what would be a packed 767 headed back to JFK. The plane interior had been redone. The Business Elite cabin had the new seats, and the coach class section had the new leather seats, signage, carpeting, and such. The plane was clean, but it smelled like feet. Were pleasant, but in that cheery southern charm thing that is so Delta, and so not what you want after spending 10 days in Europe. The service was fine. Efficient. Food was actually pretty good.

The flight itself wasn't bad but the product needs work. Delta is not AF, and it certainly isn't up to par with CO which is the only frankly decent US carrier for long haul. The plane wasn't all that old. It looked better than some 767-300's I've flown in on AA.

I only few DL because my ticket was an AF/DL combo. As I saw the CO 767-400 take off ahead of us, headed for EWR I sort of wished I was on that plane instead.

Nice trip report. I almost decided to go to Paris for April break with the family but instead have decided to go to Hawaii. We'll be flying CO EWR-HNL on April 13th. I can't wait to seeexperience the 767-400 and have been glad to hear good things about CO and their long haul service. This will be my first time flying with them.

Do you think CO is the best US carrier in long-haul service? Better than AA or UA? I ask you because I only know the domestic AA and UA service (including a SDQ-MIA with AA) and in my Trans-Atlantic journeys to the States I've only flown with IB and AF.
Time flies! Enjoy life!

It is not a "semi-AVOD" on the 772s?

Yeah, i would also think it's the semi-AVOD which is actually only semi-VOD, as the audio is not on-demand.

By semi, it is meant that the movies are restarted every 15 minutes, and you can tune into the movie and wait for it to begin. However, you cannot forward/reverse etc.

I definitely wouldn't say the crews on the JFK TATL flights have "southern charm". Most of them are some of the old mama's who came over from PA.

Compared to what other US carriers?
