Airbus A380 Demo Flight Trip Report HKG-HKG

Mon Mar 26, 2007 7:43 pm

Hi All

I was invited by Airbus to sample the A380 from Hong Kong to Hong Kong. The purpose of this flight is to demostrate the A380 to Asian and local media. This is the first demo flight of A380 taking place in Asia with actual passenger onboard.

24 March 2007
AIB203/LH8948
F-WWJB, A380-841
Captain Jacques Rosay
POB 109/519 capacity
ETD 1400 Local
ATD 1600 Local (2 hr delay)
ATA 1800 Local
Gate 62 @HKIA

The inbound A380 flight from Frankfurt carried a full load of invited guest were delayed 2+hrs from 9am arrival to 1230 arrival. (Rumor to be hydraulic problem!!) so our demo flight departure time has been pushed 2 hours further. I received a call from Airbus PR in the morning and head to the airport at 1:30pm. Check in was at Aisle G at Lufthansa counter and there is a flight reception at Gate 62 with light refreshment, flight briefing took place before boarding at 3:30pm.

First Class, I like the purple colors.

Quite similar to Etihad's Business class on 77W.

I sat in First Class seat 3A. The flight actually was a free seating flight, with many local media board straight onto upper deck using another aerobridge and helping themselve seating in Economy. There were few First Class seats left and I was quite surprised. Seems some of the local TV crew never done interview on planes, not knowing what's the best seat to enjoy  Wink

Departing Hong Kong

Pushback at 1600 ontime.
Runway 25L at 1610 local time.

You can see the outside view from the tail mounted camera, what a beast!!!!

Inflight

Seat Belt sign were turned off ASAP so letting all the media member can freely move around the cabin and do the filming work. I was invited to the cockpit (by knowing Jacques Rosay in Toulouse and Sydney) and seated with the crew for a bit

Some testing in the cabin.

After sat in the cockpit, I gave up my seat for some cabin photos

First, the upper deck

Business Class, lie flat style , similar to LH (or may be the same)

Back to my first Class seat now after a whole walk thru the plane. Bellinger Champagne and Canapes were served by Airbus crew.

Front staircase to upper deck.

After 1 hour 45 mins flight around Hong Kong at FL310. We started descend, intially to FL150. I took my jumpseat.

http://samchuiphotos.com/HKA380/DSC_3150.jpg

But later I was told another media member had pre-booked the jumpseat in advance so i have to give up my privilage. No problem. I was slightly disappointed at first but knowing what is yours will always comes around. I am sure I will get the chance again in the future.

We landed Hong Kong on Rwy 25R during the evening at 1758 and taxiied to the gate right on block at 1800 local time.
Overall the flight was a success, extremely smooth, powetful, quieter and handled turbulence very well (much better than the long tube A340-600). It is certainly the next generation of travel.

http://samchuiphotos.com/HKA380/DSC_3156.jpg

I would like to thank Airbus for this rare opportunity. Quite surprisngly I found myself was the only Australian media/reporter on this trip with the rest heavily focused on the Australian Air Show at Avalon.

I hope you like my simple photo trip report. Since the flight time was rather short, so there isn't any need of going into details in length.

For any picture usage permission issues, please kindly email me.

Hi Sam,

Very interesting to read and see.

As you have flown in most First Class sections out there, what was your overall feeling?
Is this layout just for this media flight, or will this interior actually be fitted for LH?

Thanks!

Hi Sudden

the First class is quite ordinary but this is Airbus standard not airline standard. Can only imagine what Emirates can bring....would love the concept of individual or duo suites.

I'm pretty sure if Qantas was doing this the Australian media would have flocked to the Route Proving event.

I thought the tail camera was a cool addition, particularly when you can watch it while airborne (you can make the image out on some of the ceiling mounted monitors). While the aircraft looks great inside and out, I'd prefer that Airbus and its customers work out the kinks prior to 777fan getting onboard!

Sam...thanks for this report! Awesome - the aircraft looks great from the inside. I see they've adopted 777-style bins that fold into the ceiling as opposed to the A330/A340 ones that hang down from the ceiling. Should be good.

Wonder if operators will actually maintain the 36" pitch when the aircraft enters commercial service.

Thanks everyone.

Stylo777.

Great Report you posted. I am in China at the moment, so when I return home next week I will link some of my video onboard and from the cockpit as well.

777fan.

Absolutely right. Actually there were 3 camera view, 1 is from tail mounted, 1 is downward camera and last is from forward camera. You get to view any of 3 on the PTV system onboard.

VH-VXB
actually this flight is for Asian media only. There will be separate flight later this year for Australian media.

The 2 hrs flight serve as a good sampler, it is particularly enjoyable with only 20% full of capacity so you get plenty of leg room to move around for better pictures. Will post for more later. Finally I've flown an A380.....time travelling fast.

Cheers everyone  Smile

I noticed too that Airbus adopted the 777 style lockers. If you look in coach, they use the standard airbus bins. I wonder why they didn't use the 777 lockers for Y class?

Good trip report, and very lucky for flying on this marvellous piece of engineering!

A few questions, is HKG all setup for the A380, meaning do all gates have the ability to handle the aircraft? It looks from the pictures that all they are doing is just elevating the second of the two fingers up to the level of the upper deck. Or are there only a few gates at HKG that allow the A380? Being a frequent flyer to HKG I am intruiged to know which gates would be used!

Again, great trip report and good pictures!

There will be another trip the big plane will make to Asia and Australia later this year before it goes into service with SQ. That trip should take in West Asia, India, China and Australia. Maybe in August-September and maybe on a customer a/c!

They have 777 style bins on the lower deck only. Even in Y. The 'normal' airbus bins are fitted only on te upper deck.

BTW great TR, I cant wait to try the A380....gonna have to start saving teh coppers, methinks

Great report as usual, Sam! I was wondering, how big are the windows on the 380, the cut-out in the paneling looks quite big, but it looks to me as if the actual window is quite small. How does it compare to those on other aircraft?

Once again great report, and I can't wait to fly on the A380.

MSNYX, I think the A380 window are not as big as the one currently on B747 but bigger than A340-600.
