FRA-HAM On D-AIRL (29.03.2007, 18:20-19:20)

Sat Mar 31, 2007 10:59 pm

Hi there!

Due to the nice replies on my last trip report "A Great Day In The Cockpit" (http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/94320/) I created another one for you.

This time I was flying to Hamburg for to celebrate with my family. As you may know from my last report I moved to FRA one month ago. On my first leg from FRA to HAM I was joining an A300 from Lufthansa and enjoyed a seat in the last seat row. It's amazing how deep the tail dives during rotation. And BTW: I got the drink at first due to the aft galley where service for the aft cabin starts. I made no pics due to to the high pax load. I don't wanna seem like a freak...

The leg back home to FRA was on board D-AIRL and I was granted to fly on my favorite seat. Jumpseat in the cockpit. We had to wait for a slot which added some 15mins delay. Weather was good at HAM but some big cumulus clouds and thunderstorms at FRA forced the FRAPORT to reduce movements per minute. While waiting for our start-up and taxi clearance, Mr Lauer (chief financial officer) talked to us in the front office and told us some interesting facts from his meeting at HAM. Lufthansa is good but needs to catch up to Ryanair's good financial situation.

If you're going to HAM make sure to enter the "Mövenpick Restaurant" in Terminal 2. The Amarena-Cherry-Ice is really tasty!!! They offer a lot of meals from Switzerland. Lufthansa Employees are getting 40% price reduction  Big grin You can see the restaurant right above the company 737. The terrace is open again but with an annoying fence. On this picture we are starting ENG No 2.

During taxi-out we saw N777AS on which I once worked during my apprenticeship. This is one of only two private 777s in the world! It's always stored at HAM and will be returned into service by Lufthansa Technik if the owner wants to use it for a trip to London or whatever. Therefore it needs to be flown to Jiddah each and every time for catching up the lucky ones travelling on board.

We were taxiing down to rwy 05 from Gate C17 via taxiway Kilo and November. We had to wait some minutes on taxiway Romeo before crossing rwy 33 due to a Citation which was taxiing to rwy 23 instead. My pilots were surprised as I was when we saw the Citation thundering down rwy 23 while we stopped at the end and reported ready on the holding point. "It seems as everyone can ask for it's own runway. Why didn't we ask for 33? That would have been much faster than this city-trip. And why the heck is the "Schweinchen" (little pig which is the nickname for all LH 737s) taxiing to rwy 15?" This is how it looked after taxiing into position behind the departing Citation.

Rwy 05 is really bumpy at the threshold. My dear! The pilots meant it's like driving on an "Acker" (acre). We switched off both packs for having more power on our V2500 engines during take-off roll. Rotation was smooth though.

Gear is going up while passing the terminals where I had my Ice cream some 30min ago.

Turning right to 164° following DLE 6C departure route. But we had radar vectors until waypoint ULSEN.

Climbing to FL310 enroute to FRA.

Following a Cirrus aircraft down to FRA.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c184/lufthansi/01011408.jpg

Here you can see the reason for our delayed slot at HAM.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c184/lufthansi/01011412.jpg

Frankfurt radar at it's best. "The Cirrus is in sight. Can we follow visual and catch up?" "Yeah, but don't get ahead of him and contact tower on ninteen-niner"

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c184/lufthansi/01011418.jpg

Dizzy weather at FRA. The cars on the A3 and A5 are already lighted up. And so are we at 1000 feet.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c184/lufthansi/01011420.jpg

Short finals for 25 L.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c184/lufthansi/01011424.jpg

Busy FRA all day long.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c184/lufthansi/01011426.jpg

Backtracking to Gate 11. Holding short of 25R for a company A319.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c184/lufthansi/01011428.jpg

There we are. Nearly on time, safe and lucky due to the nice trip.

I wanna thank the cockpit crew for their friendly permission to join them in the cockpit. It has been a truly amazing experience and made the day even nicer as it already was.

I hope you enjoyed my trip report. Of course the pics are not at a.net quality but maybe interesting to some of you. Feel free to post your comments!

Hey, cool pictures. I was on D-AIRL (A321-100) from LHR to FRA in April 2006. In need of an updated interior if I remember correctly...
