NW DTW-STL 4/10, STL-DTW 4/15

Mon Apr 16, 2007 6:14 am

Another trip report about my nearly monthly trip to STL on NW. The flight to STL was aboard flight 1451, a DC-9-41 N753NW, a fine product of 1968. I had flown F on this plane on my last STL-DTW trip. This time I was in 14F. The plane arrived a bit late from ROA and we had to wait for a new crew; so the plane was boarded from rear to front and we were able to leave on time. The flight was smooth, but it was cloudy and that covered the ground for most of the trip. We got into STL about five minutes late, but that is nothing to complain about. STL has been working a bit on Concourse A and the ramp leading to/from the concourse had a construction crew fixing up the walls. I only waited a few minutes for my luggage.

The trip back to DTW was routine. NW 1680 flying a DC-9-32, N609NW, built in 1969. The flight was full. I was told that the flight was overbooked by two people. I volunteered to get off if they showed up. I like doing that if I have nothing better to do. However those two didn't show up so I went at the regular time. We pushed back from the gate right on time and we got in the air ASAP. Not much traffic at STL today. Hardly anything hanging around the AA gates. The flight to DTW was smooth and you could see the ground the entire way, except for a few spots. Landing was rough, one of roughest in a while. As the plane descended into DTW it got really bumpy, but I have experienced much worse. We pulled into the gate about 7 minutes early. The weather was clear, but it was windy. By the time I walked to baggage claim my bags were already there.

Service was good on the DTW-STL trip, of course on that short of a trip you get about enough time to drink a Pepsi. The service on the way home was not as good. One of the FAs didn't seem as organized as usual. He was young and maybe didn't have that much experience yet. The FA made the speech about the Skymall catalog and getting the 15 miles for each dollar spent, when purchased on the flight. I found something I wanted, but when I asked the FA about getting an order form he said he didn't know how to do that. He later came and told me they didn't have nay. This is the second time that has happened to me. Last October I ordered something and never got it and I was never billed, so I guess the FA I handed it to never turned it in. Why do they make the announcement if they don't seem to care that much about the Skymall? Service was great at STL. The same guys I usually see at the gate were there and friendly as usual.

Good report, it kept me pretty entertained while reading. I would still like to fly on NW's DC-9s a couple of times before they are retired.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.
