AC857 LHR-YYZ

Hi this is my first ever post on the a.net forums and hopefully it will be the first of many.

I thought i would start of with a trip report so below is a flight that i took to Toronto in march, hope you like it

Date: March 08 2006
Departure Airport: LHR (London Heathrow)
Arrival Airport: YYZ (Toronto Pearson)
Aircraft: A340-300
Registration: C-GDVC (Fin #910)
Seat: 39A
Scheduled Departure time: 13:00
Actual Departure Time: 13:35
Scheduled Arrival Time: 15:10
Actual Arrival Time: 16:05


My flight left Heathrow at 13:00 scheduled time, and we had to get to college ready for our 2 hour coach trip round the M25 to Heathrow airport. We were aiming to reach Heathrow by 09:30 but due to the usual traffic jams we reached there late at 10:15.
We went straight to the Air Canada check-in and we all got our boarding cards and boarding times. I was sitting in seat 39a, a window seat (Perfect!)

We then proceeded through an immense queue for security checks, me and two friends went to check out terminal 3 facilities. I left the two friends in the pub having an early drink and breakfast I went in search of a good viewing area to sit and take some pictures.

I managed to take some pictures while taking a walk through the virgin gates and some of the Asian arrivals. While looking through the glass I catched my first every glimpse of Hibiscus 747-400 9V-MPD. Unfortunately my camera wasn't’t good enough to take a picture of it. I was using my phone and only have a 1.3 Mega Pixels with no zoom at that resolution.

I went back to the pub were my mates were and we went off to our gate. We had to go to gate 27 (I think) and waited in the departure area. We seemed to wait there for ages but we eventually got the call to start boarding. As I was in row 39 I would be one of the first to board.

We got on-board and first impressions of the cabin crew were that they were quite old but still very professional. I got myself seated, belted up and my MP3 player out for the 7 hour flight. I was very shocked with the leg room in the a340; a nice 36 inch pitch

As you can see, little IFE available and most of the films were not to my taste, outbound was Walk the Line and inbound was Pride and Prejudice.

After a short wait for push-back we were on our way for a 27L departure taking us past the parked Concorde. Below are some shots of the wing while on our way to the runway for departure. Sorry for the droplets on the windows it was raining quite hard.

While taxing for departure we were informed that the aircraft had to keep the landing ear extended for 5 minutes after take-off, I thought that was very odd. The reasons the captain told us was because we might of heard some strange noises after take-off.

Finally it was our turn to line up and depart for Toronto, i didnt get any shots of the take-off as my camera decided to play up but i managed to get it going again just after lift off. Here's a pic of it:

Nothing much to report on with the flight in general, most of the flight was smooth with a few bumpy patches but we passed them quickly. The flight meal was very nice and I had the salmon with boiled potatoes. Was very nice indeed Big grin

So i sat back and relaxed with some music and watched a couple of movies on my personal DVD player. The flight seemed to drag on a long time but that was mainly because i hadn't flown that length of flight in years :lol:

I went off to sleep for an hour or so and when i woke up i saw a Delta 767 flying right under us on its way to the USA. Here's a picture:

We were flying at FL400 so we saw a great contrast between the black and blue.

So after a long 7.5hrs flight it was time for us to start our descent. At first it was gentle but then the captain decided to put the nose down pull the throttles back and put the speed brakes up. We fell like a stone for about 10mins and suddenly we were though the clouds and overflying the airport ready for our arrival on rwy 23. Here are some pics of the decent and of the approach;

Now that we have lined up for the landing we encountered more turbulence and the flaps become to come down fast along with the landing gears.

The landing was very smooth and we did the famous a340 tip-toe as i felt the gear touch down and then fall forward again Big grin

We had quite a long taxi to complete to our gate at Toronto and we went past a cargo plane that i have never seen before in the UK:

We finally arrived at the gate and after a quick de-boarding we made our way to the bus stands for a bus ride to terminal 1 to go through security and passport control and to collect our luggage.

The bus ride was a very nice un-expected surprise as it was like a mini tour around Toronto airport. Here are some pictures I got from the bus:

Very odd indeed... Any professional opinions as to why they had to keep the landing gear down for 5 minutes?

UA doesn't fly JFK-LHR any longer. The 777 is going to either IAD, SFO, LAX or ORD.
Airliners.net has many forums. It has spell check and search functions. Use them before posting!

With all that fuss about the 777s, I'm starting to forget that AC still has a massive Airbus fleet.

AC plans to do the 333s with the project XM. The PTVs cut out are there because IIRC AC planned on putting them in but they could not afford it while they where in bankruptcy protection.

Good report Tommy212. I love reading these trip reports.

The reason for the landing gear remaining down after lift-off could be the mechanism that slows the wheels before being stowed in the wheel-well wasn't working properly. Therefore the pilot let them slow/stop naturally, before retracting them. This aircraft would typically have a turnround time of around two hours, minimum, so any hot brakes on landing should have cooled by departure time (particularly on the weather conditions of that day). Hot brakes are more of a problem with the LoCo's with 25 minute turnrounds.
