DL: Atlanta (ATL) To Bridgetown, Barbados (BGI)

Fri May 18, 2007 11:15 pm

Hi Guys,

Hope you enjoy this report of my trip to Barbados on a Delta B737-800. Being a Medallion member, I got upgraded to First Class on both ways, which I was quite pleased! The service is identical to domestic First, but hey, it's free upgrade, so I'll take it any day!

Date: May 11, 2007
Airline: Delta
Registration: N3743H
Aircraft: Boeing 737-800
Departure City: ATL - Atlanta Hartsfield
Departure Time: 9:32am
Destination: BGI - Bridgetown, Barbados
Arrival Time: 2:09pm
Scheduled Flight Time: 4hrs 37min
Class: First
Seat: 2D

Having spent the night in Atlanta, I headed off to the airport around 7:30am, checked-in and went to the Crown Room in the E-concourse, since my flight left from Gate E2. CRCs have a good selection of booze, but can't say the same about food. I browsed the net for a bit (of course I had to pay for wi-fi, which irritates me most about the CRCs!) and then headed off to the gate to find out the gate agent calling my name to give me my upgrade boarding pass  Smile

Anyway, here is our 737:

Legroom (not great, but the picture may not be doing justice!):

A Delta MD-88 at Atlanta:

We were number 1 for take-off, which is hard to believe in Atlanta!

Leaving US via the Florida Coast:

Food Service: Since the service is identical to domestic First, no choice of meal is provided. It is usually Chicken with some sort of Pasta that they serve along with a small salad, bread and dessert. I think it's ok and it tastes good, but could definitely be improved:

Over Turks and Caicos:

Spotted a few Cruise ships along the way:

A shot of the Delta's Caribbean Service from their Sky Magazine:

St Thomas:

More Caribbean Islands:

Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands:

British Virgin Island of Tortola and US Virgin Island of St. John:

Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands:

More British Virgin Islands:

St. Kitts and Nevis:

Overflying Antigua:

Guadeloupe:

Starting our descent into Barbados:

Approaching Barbados:

Our parking stand was next to the Virgin 747-400:

Other Barbados visitors:

Arrivals - Street Exit:

Rockley, Christ Church, Barbados:

She wants to have fun in the sun  Wink (I swear, I am not a pervert! Big grin lol):

Bridgetown, Barbados:

I did not take a lot of pics of the return flight, but here are some shots of Grantley Adams Airport's ramp action:

Overflying Martinique on the way back to Atlanta:

And finally, food service in Delta's first class (chicken and pasta, what else?!)

Hope you enjoyed this report! Comments/Criticisms welcome!  Smile

Thanks for posting the pictures of Barbados. I was there twice and never visited downtown. If I ever go back will do that. Looks nice.

Awesome pictures on the way down.

And at least you got food. I flew ATL-SJU in F last March (got an opp. upgrade  Smile) and we got absolutely nothing but the snack basket.

Also, perhaps this is just my hangover from last night still speaking, but why isn't Puerto Rico anywhere on the map of destinations presented in Sky Magazine? It seems to be strangely missing.

The map in the magazine he is showing is for all international routes out of Atlanta.

Guess I don't need to take a trip to the Caribbean since I've seen each and every island! Great pics.

Great report, thanks for writing. Never been to BGI, but it looks like fun!

How were the loads on these flights? I'm wondering how some of DL's new Caribbean destinations are doing for them ...

It's on the domestic map.

You seem to have seen most of the Antilles in addition to U.S. and British Virgin Islands on your way to Barbados!
I was surprised that you had even included a picture of Jost Van Dyke BVI. There is a place called Little Harbour on the South Coast. Had to check whether the restaurant called Sydney's Peace and Love still is there. Excellent fresh lobster! We took a boat trip there from St Thomas years ago. Incidentally, my last flight in a Convair Metropolitan took place when we flew from StCroix to St Thomas on American Inter Island. I have visited Barbados on an even earlier occasion, only the airport looks a lot bigger now.
Thanks for sharing, great report!

Them ramp shots at barbados look great, seeing such big jets at quaint airports make it look spectacular.

Thanks for the Trip Report Skyteam, I am starting to feel homesick for the Caribbean! Barbados is indeed very beautiful and offers lots for the visiotr - beaches, nightlife, culture, shopping, diving and the like. I have not been to Barbados for 7 years now but, who knows, I may make a trip there next time I fly to POS. BGI is also very busy and as you have seen it offers a wide range of flights to the US, UK, Canada, Europe and the region.

Yes indeed, one of the joys of flying around the Caribbean is the view of all the Islands along the way. It seems as though you got the famous Montagne Pelee in your shot of Martinique - the volcano erupted in 1902 with over 32000 lives lost, the deadliest volcanic eruption ever in the region.

Thanks for giving us all a slice of Caribbean sunshine.

TrinToCan.
Hop to it, fly for life!

Thanks for all the compliments guys(and gals)!

I would say the plane was about 80% full, which I thought is pretty good considering the price of a ticket to the Caribbean these days.

As Evan767 and RwSEA noted, it is on the domestic map. Though when you call up Delta regarding a ticket to Puerto Rico, they transfer you to the International desk. Go figure!
