STR-ZRH-ATH, MLO-ATH-ZRH-STR On LX & OA In Y, Pics

Thu Jun 07, 2007 2:27 am

Hi everyone!  wave  I hope you'll enjoy reading this report about my trip to Greece. Again I'm a little late, having taken this trip over half a year ago, in October/November of 2006. I hope nobody minds!

This flight, one of the shortest ones in Swiss’ route network, was operated by Cirrus Airlines on behalf of Swiss. It was my first time in an Embraer jet and I was enjoying it so much I forgot to take pictures. The large windows and the ample leg room turned this flight into a very enjoyable experience. The only thing I didn’t like was that only chocolate was offered, but no water. Take a look at this snack and beverage overview. In my opinion it would make more sense to offer water on short flights instead of chocolate, because that chocolate doesn’t taste very good if one’s mouth is dry.

We got seated in the last row, but I didn’t mind, since I could recline without having to hear the people behind me complaining and I could ask for some more calzones filled with tomatos and cheese. yummy

On the LH MUC-ATH flight one receives a full warm meal, but since LX was cheaper than LH to ATH, I’m not complaining.

The famous LX chocolate

Coffee

View of the cabin with retractable screens showing the airshow. One screen was broken and was opening and closing the whole time. biting

ATH is a very modern and tidy airport, everywhere I looked I saw people busy cleaning, but there's no observation deck. grumpy

This is the ferry which took us to the Greek island of Sifnos, the Express Athina, built in 1973.

Sifnos is a lot greener than the other Cycladic islands.

Sifnos is also known as the island with the 365 churches, one for every day of the year.

Sunset as seen from the Profitis Ilias (682 m), the highest mountain of Sifnos

This is the monastery on top of the Profitis Ilias. There was nobody else up there, but a camping cooker had been set up for the tourists to make coffee. Unfortunately the coffee powder was empty. Sad

What a nice place for a baptismal font!

Off to Milos! The same ferry took us there, it seems there is only this one ship supplying the south-western Cyclades in the low season.

Some archaeological excavation

There are some very bizarre volcanic landscapes on MLO!

This ship lost its engines in December 2003. Luckily there weren't any casualties.

Even more bizarre rock formations

I'd better get back to some aviation-related stuff before I have to post this is non-av. Embarrassment

The small airport of Milos. The only place one can get to from here is ATH.

The 2625 ft (about 800 m) long runway is one of the shortest commercial runways worldwide, and I'd be starting from it shortly. biggrin

Here comes the plane!

Note the wide-open gate which leads right to the apron. eyepopping  scratchchin  thumbsdown

That was a take-off  faint ! I guess I should have filmed it for you people to enjoy. Embarrassment

If you look closely you can see the shadow of the aircraft surrounded by a halo.

Some beverages were offered: Water,

orange juice,

and coffee. Sufficient for the 20-minute flight.

View from the hotel room in ATH

Since we had been to Athens before, we had decided to not spend so much time there.

Again we were seated in the last row.

The same meal again  bored

Chocolate and orange juice

View of the cabin. The A320s were the first planes in LX's fleet to get the refurbished interior. I didn't notice too much difference.

Again I didn't take any pictures  ashamed . This flight was completely uneventful, so I don't know what else to write about it except that the Embraer 170 is my new favourite plane.

Conclusion:
LX is a reliable and professional airline, but a more diversified meal choice wouldn't be a bad idea. The OA flight wasn't bad either, but I couldn't understand a word the flight attendant or the pilot were saying.

That was it, I hope you enjoyed it. In my next trip report I'll try to give some more detailed descriptions if that is desired. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Cool report!
Good thing to write the TR now, even if you took this trip quite a while ago. I will do the same soon, posting a TR from 2006 Sep-Oct.
That personalized chocolate is really interesting, I haven't seen anything like it before. Did you enjoy it?

Nice pictures! They brought back my memories from Greece.

Interesting report and really great pics.

Swiss seems to offer a good product; however, meal service on ZRH-ATH looks like being below of what I would have expected on a 2:30 hours flight.

Your pics of the Cyclades Islands brought back some nice memories of my own trips to Santorini - but Sifnos and Milos look nice as well.

Flying with Olympic on domestic flights between the islands is really great - I myself enjoyed it a lot.

Hello, SkyGourmet,
with homeport STR, its always nice to read STR reports from another point of view.
Time changes, Swiss is now back into STR with RJ100 equipment.
I enjoyed the pix of your greek vacation, some points to remember for me.
There is no terrace at ATH like you stated, next time, give McD. a try and enjoy it!.
Greetings,

Nice, but brief TR. No drinks on the STR-ZRH flight is indeed poor, i even got water on a Golden Air Saab340 flight from TMP to HEL, which is about 25mins flying time, but with LX being back in STR with their own equipment, this has hopefully changed. About the meal service on ZRH-ATH: Meal services can be quite a lottery and it is very possible to be unlucky enought to get the same meal twice on the inbound and outbound flight, as there's usually a number of meals for a certain destination, which are bound to repeat themselves after a while. The same has happened to me before, last time on AY ZRH-HEL-ZRH when i was served the exact same meal on both the inbound and outbound flight Big grin It doesn't really bother me however, even at home you start eating the same things all over again after a certain period of time  Silly

- Yep, they are nice birds to travel on.

- I guess that got annoying, would have annoyed me.

Enjoyable report, sometimes pictures speak louder than words. Really liked your snaps of Greece. I agree that a drink should be served on the STR-ZRH flights, particularly with the liquid restrictions being what they are nowadays.

Greetings

I really enjoyed reading your TR, and maybe I am a minority, but I found the non-av pics even more amazing.... IMO it makes a perfect trip report if the reader gets to see the local sights and highlights, outside the airports!

Well done, and thanks for sharing!  Smile

Great TR. LX is a great product, Greece is a great country. You couldn't really have chosen a better vacation, unless you'd gone to Santorini, haha.

Quoting SkyGourmet (Thread starter):
some more calzones filled with tomatos and cheese.

I LOVE those things.

Quoting Contact Air (Reply 3):

It's not big, but it's filling, with all the melted cheese and tomato sauce in it.

Quoting Semsem (Reply 7):
LX serve the same Calzone as a snack to New York from Geneva.

Yes, they certainly do. I was exhausted on my flight back (LX22) in March, but I made my friend wake me up for the calzones.

Quoting SkyGourmet (Thread starter):
The famous LX chocolate

Which, and this absolutely infuriated me, I didn't get on EITHER of my flights with LX back in March. On LX23 they ran out (I was in the last row) and on LX22 a week later, they simply didn't have them on board.

I was so dissapointed!

But surely better than the lame snackbox with 1 cracker, 1 cheese and a small pasta-salad i got on KL on both 2.30 hrs legs AMS-HEL-AMS.
