PHX-MSP-PHX NW (pics)

Fri Jun 22, 2007 5:43 am

Background:

I had to go up north to register for fall classes at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. We wanted to fly into GFK but it costed an arm and a leg, so we looked at other options, such as Fargo, Winnipeg, and Minnieapolis. We ended up going with MSP because it offered the best times and the most options out of PHX. Now we could have flown US, SY, and NW non-stop, and countless others if we wanted to make a connection, but in the end decided upon NW. With the summer sched. NW doesnt have as many 757 flights out of PHX (757 is one of my favorite planes to fly on), so I looked at the timetables and low and behold the best times for us was on two 75 flights. Sounds good to me. Now on to the flights......

Saturday June 16th
Northwest Flight #116
Depart PHX 6:45 am (actual 6:40 am)
Arrive MSP 11:51 am (actual 11:35 am)
757-200R
Seat 33A

We left the house at about 4:45 am and had about a half hour drive the the airport ahead of us. Traffic was light and we were parked and walking into the terminal at 5:20. Walking up to the NW check in counters I noticed that the line was abnormally long for this time of the day. It was because there was a bunch of Army soilders heading to the middle east and they were going to be on our flight today. The line didnt matter because I just used the self-service check in kiosk because there was no line, and I didnt feel like waiting. The night before I logged on to nwa.com and bought the choch-choise seating for 15.00 USD and was confirmed an exit-row window seat, perfect because I had a window and could get up with out disturbing anyone if need be. Anyways, after Starbucks it was on to security, the line wasnt to bad. I was done in about 20 min.

Delta, Airtran, and NW tails.

Not very busy, yet.

I walked around the concourse for awhile and went to look out the windows took a couple more pics.

Being serviced for the flight to ATL in a little over an hour. Looks kinda cool with the sun rising.

Downtown Phoenix

Notice the mainline UA tails at T2, (there where two more but they cannot be seen in this pic). It is very rare to have more than one mainline UA flight per day at PHX, because all the SFO, ORD, and DEN flights are operated by Ted much less four. So it was weird seeing four on the ground at the sametime!

I made my way to gate 25 sat down and listened to my iPod for about 10 min. Then they called boarding for first class, followed be elite customers, and then the passengers seated in exit rows, so I made my way to the counter and handed the agent by boarding pass and made my way down the jetway to our 757. Boarding seemed to go very quick. Before I knew it the F/A said that the boarding door was closed and we had to turn off the electronic equipment. And we began to push back.

DL 757 heading to ATL pushed back just ahead of us.

PHX's new control tower, hopefully I'll work there someday....... It is very impressive.

another 757 going to MSP later on.

We made a short taxi and where number two in line for takeoff after a WN 73G. Now I just love the 757 takeoff, when we lined up at the end of the runway we sat there for a couple minutes waiting for our clearance. Soon enough the engines spooled up and we accelerated down the runway. I smiled from ear to ear when we lifted off, the 75 is like a rocket, she is soo overpowered, but I love it.

Phoenix is such a huge city, It still continues to amaze me seeing it from the air.

Turning north-east out of the city, headed to MSP.

It took about 20 min. to reach our crusing alt. of 32,000 feet. The ride was smooth as silk almost the whole way, have a I mentioned that I love the 757? lol. After we reached cruising alt. the beverage service began. I ordered a Pepsi, and got the whole can, this is yet another reason why I like NW, they are one of the few airlines that serve Pepsi instead of the swill called Coke, gag....... They also offered a snack box for 5.00 USD. I bought one and then I wished I wouldnt have because it wasnt worth the $5.00 that they charged. It consisted of goldfish, cookies, sausage, cheese and crackers. It was good, just one worth $5, but oh well. After they took the garbage the F/As dissapeared.

cruising, halfway to MSP.

I fell asleep for a little bit, maybe an hour, and woke up as we began out decent. Again the decent was very smooth, and I read my book for a little bit. Its called TRACON, by Paul McElroy about air traffic controllers at ORD who get into some trouble, its a very good read and dont want to give away to much info. We continued to get closer to MSP and soon enough I could see downtown:

The airport the came into view:

entering the downwind.

Mall of America in Bloomington, MN.

We went through some clouds on approch and it got a little bumpy but thats it during the whole flight. It was nice looking down upon some green as I am used to the desert, and it being all tan and brown.

Final approch into MSP, see what Im talking about, about the green.....

We touched down, which seemed to be a very hard landing and turned off the active very quickly.

A NW 333 just arrived and can be seen taxing back to the G concoruse.

MSP really is red-tail country.

We docked up at gate C16. I always love flying in and out of MSP, it really is a delightful airport. Modern, clean, and easy. Since we didnt have a checked baggage we headed straight to dollar rental car company. Our car was a Sebring. I took about 20 min from stepping off the aircraft to get to the rental car company and another five minutes to get out of the airport.

Welcome to North Dakota, whole lot of nothing.

5.5 hour drive from MSP to Grand Forks, is almost done.

University of North Dakota:
The University up in Grand Forks is very impressive. Their Aerospace department is world class. I wont go into to many details but I thought it was awesome and am very excited to start studying ATC up here.

Aerospace building

UND at GFK.

**Note**
I wasnt able to take any pictures on the return leg because I fell asleep right away, but I did take some at the airport in MSP waiting for my flight. But I cant seem to get them to load, so I will try to post them at a later date.

Wed. June 20th
Northwest Airlines #125
Depart MSP 5:00 pm (actual 5:10 pm)
Arrive PHX 6:13 pm (actual 6:17 pm)
757-200R
Seat 33F

The flight left out of gate G16 in MSP. I dont have to many details about this flight because I fell asleep just after take-off until we began our approch into PHX. I turned on my iPod right after we passed 10,000 ft and drifted off, I didnt partake in the beverage service at all nor did I purchase a snack box, or whatever they were serving. Again sorry I cant report more about this flight. They said the load factor was 100%.

Again, I will try to post pics from MSP later on, if anyone is interested that is.

Thank you for reading.

The weather was awesome the whole time I was there. A little humid, going to have to get used to that. We had a storm on Monday night but that was kinda nice too. BTW are the winters there really that bad? How cold does it really get?

Quite an interesting report, good luck with your ATC education, something I am quite interested in as well.

LOL, how true is this really? Is it quite boring in the Dakotas, Wyoming? I know someone who purchased a house in Fargo for 43,000 bucks. Is the cost of living that low down there?

More importantly, you're going to have to get used to the -30 degree temperatures in January! UND has everything connected by skyways though, right? Good luck with your studies; college is great, especially when you're studying something that you have a desire for.

The book Tracon is required reading for AVIT103 - Intro to ATC. All flight students are required to take that course. Good book.

It will be going up now that Microsoft is coming to Fargo and creating their second biggest section of the company after Seattle. It will bring 10,000 new jobs to Fargo. Thats a huge and fast growth.

That must be new because when I took it spring of 06 it was just an extra credit reading.
