Spotting In Denmark: TXL-CPH-TXL On SAS

Sat Aug 11, 2007 3:22 am

Hello everyone,
after my 1st TR in June you are now able to read my second one. After trying several airlines in the last months, I wanted to fly on Star Alliance again. So I chose Scandinavian, because it was a long time ago I flew on a prop (I think I was three years old^^).

I woke up at 7:50 a.m. and after having a shower and breakfast my mom brought me to Tegel Airport. Check-in went very fast because there was no queue at the counter. I wanted to have a window seat on the right hand side due to eastern wind and I got 20F. Last row, but that was okay. Unfortunately it was not possible to check-in for the evening flight so I had to check-in Copenhagen. After that I went into the main hall, got some Danish Crowns and made a few shots.

Busy morning at the airport.

AF A318 and LX A320 arriving at the same time on A14/A15.

Then I passed the security control which was quite tight and then waited for my flight.

SK 1674
To: Copenhagen-Kastrup Int. Airport (CPH)
Dep.: 09:50 a.m. / 10:07 a.m.
Arr.: 10:55 a.m. / 10:50 a.m.
LN-RDP (Dash 8-400)

Boarding time was announced to be 09:20 but the plane wasn't even at the gate at this time but a few minutes later it was.

LN-RDP arriving at 09:29.

Boarding started at 09:40 and was very fast. The ground crew was a bit bored but they did there job. After the okay of the f/a we were allowed to walk a short way to the plane.

Boarding of SK 1674.

I was feeling very good, when I read this text  Smile.

A female and a male flight attendant which were both very nice welcomed the passengers and helped them. At this point I noticed how many old people were in the plane what surprised me a bit. Although the Dash is only 7 years old it was quite "rancid". Especially at hidden places was dirt. It was not bad at all but I noticed it anyway. The load factor was 100% I think maybe I overlooked some free seats but it was really full.

Legroom was not huge but enough.

Boarding went very fast and soon pushback started. Then we had a quick taxi to runway 08R and had a very smooth take-off. Unfortunately the windows were not very clean so it was rather difficult to make some shots but I did my very best.

TV tower visible in the center and THF at the upper right hand side.

Cabin shot while climbing to the cruising altitude.

The f/a's were very fast but I was really surprised when I heard them saying that I had to pay for drinks and food! I paid 144€ for this flight and in my eyes that is not Star Alliance standard. Anyway I wanted to drink and eat something so I paid 40DKK (6€) for a coke and a muffin.

Crossing the German coast of the Baltic Sea.

The flight was very fast and soon after we were above the Baltic Sea the descend started.

The water shimmering in the sunlight.

Shortly before touchdown on runway 04L.

The landing was a bit hard but okay and after vacating the runway we taxied to our parking position. A bus took us to the terminal.

The big departure hall of Copenhagen where I went by mistake.

Outside Terminal 3.

Then I started my long way to "Flyvergrillen" by foot. It took 30 minutes to go there but it was really a nice experience and after 7 hours at that spotting point I went back to catch my flight to Berlin.

I arrived 70 minutes before the departure at terminal 3 and looked on the television to find my check-in counter. When I saw the queue I couldn't believe my eyes. About 10 flights had to check-in at about 10 counters but the queue was so long...fortunately a SAS agent helped people. She said to me: "You can go to a self-check-in-automate and tip in your booking code." I'm not a friend of such automates but it was better than to stand a long time in a queue. The booking was even possible in German but then I got quite angry. "14C - aisle seat" was flashing on the screen. Nevertheless I went to the security and passed it this time very well.
Then I started to search an SAS counter but I didn't find one. So I tried my luck at the Transfer Centre. The guy wasn't the nicest but was able to arrange me a window seat "but there is only one left in the last row." he said. But I was fine with that and happy to have my window seat. By the way: it was 20F exactly the same seat as on the flight to CPH.

Now I was able to make some shots at the airport.

LH A320 waiting for the departure to FRA.

SK A321(?) pushed back.

SK 1677
To: Berlin-Tegel Int. Airport (TXL)
Dep.: 07:30 p.m. / 08:04 p.m.
Arr.: 08:25 p.m. / 08:53 p.m.
LN-RDF (Dash 8-400)

Our boarding counter was C5 and soon there was the new time for the flight flashing on the timetable: 07:45. That forecast was really good because it started exactly at that point of time. A bus brought us to the Dash 8. As you can see on my pictures the weather was fantastic. The sun was burning the whole day at 25C° (which is quite hot for Denmark) and there were only scattered clouds. But on that bus drive a huge rain shower was coming out of the sky. The driver really drove directly to the 5-step-ladder but it didn't make a difference. Everyone was wet  Smile. Fortunately I had my jacket with me what I already had regretted due to the hot temperature.

Rain shower...

After everyone had taken his place we were taxiing to runway 04R.

Accelerating on runway 04R and pushing the water off the runway.

Oeresund bridge between Denmark and Sweden (you can see runway 30 at the lower left corner).

Cabin shot of SK1677.

As you can see on the cabin shot the flight wasn't very full. I estimate the load factor at about 50%-60%. I had no problem with because the seat and the row next to me were empty ao I was able to chill out...

Enough legroom...

Only a bottle of water for the quick flight.

Now the delay showed its nice face. A beatiful sundown above Germany which I had missed when the flight would have been in time. Here are some impressions.

Soon we were on approach for runway 08L.

The suburb "Spandau" with the river Havel in the background.

"Olympiastadion"

Seconds later we touched down on runway 08L and taxied quickly to our parking position. After leaving the approach zone I made a quick snap of the main hall which was rather quiet now at 09:30 (last flights are departing 10:00).

I hope you enjoyed my TR although it is again very long. SAS is remaining in my mind as a very professional airline and the difference between Star Alliance and "normal" airlines is clearly visible.

See you soon,
Felix (Drogba)

Great report! Nice to see a Q400 in a TR, and TXL/CPH

Just out of curiosity, why aren't you a fan of them? I've heard a few people say they don't like them but I've never heard why.

Thanks again for the report..

Nice report! I'm a big fan of SAS (for no particular reason really) so I always like seeing SK trip reports.

Quoting Drogba (Thread starter):
The f/a's were very fast but I was really surprised when I heard them saying that I had to pay for drinks and food! I paid 144€ for this flight and in my eyes that is not Star Alliance standard.

I flew SAS on the ARN-CPH route last year and was also disappointed by this. SAS has such a sleek, modern, classy image (their livery is very simple but it's one of my absolute favorites) and having goofy buy-on-board items seems very much in contrast with that. But I guess they have to make money somehow!

Quoting Drogba (Thread starter):
Then I started my long way to "Flyvergrillen" by foot. It took 30 minutes to go there but it was really a nice experience and after 7 hours at that spotting point I went back to catch my flight to Berlin.

Very true! I walked to the Flyvergrillen back in November (I tried to take a bus from the Tarnby rail station but I got off too early) and wound up walking for a very long time through a Danish suburb. Once you get there, though, it's definitely worth the trip.

Nice work again!

Hello, Felix,
nice report and pix.
It sounds you´re in CPH at Wednesday this week.
Your pix and wheather details looks similar to mine, I was there Tue/Wed also on SK.
Btw, do you notice that "no photograph" signs in the terminal?.
I remind it from another time there in CPH, but doing some pix without any problems during my time there.
Regards,

Well, it's not the same like talking to people and asking for some things. There are sometimes things happening like it happened to me with the seat.

I was there on thursday  Wink.

Yeah, they were big inside the terminal and I didn't make any photos there but I didn't notice these signs at the departure area. Nevertheless I looked for a quiet place and used only a wide angle lens.

Very nice TR, good pics!

I also am disappointed about SK's BoB service. I'm ok with BoB service as long as the fares are low, but SK often isn't even the lowest option, as a matter of fact, they hardly ever are (out of ZRH that is).

I last went to CPH about 3 years ago, nice airport and decent spotting area too  Smile

Yes, I got some new regs indeed. Espacially the A340s and A330s of SAS but also Air China Cargo (744), Singapore Airlines Cargo (also 744), Thai (744) and an An26 of Aviavilsa (LY-APN). Unfortunately I missed Singapore Pax (772) and Delta (767).

Oh I like TXL airport. It's nice and beautiful. When I flew from STR to TXL by LH, I had a good time to watch TXL downtown when my plane was descending to the runway. Beautiful TXL downtown during early summer time. I have a nice short in my video camera.

I noticed them at security but didn't see any in the rest of the airport.

Anyone else seen Ornen/ Der Adler? The TV show with Jens Albinus. The episode in CPH is great.  Smile

Nice TR

The signs are only at security and only applies for security, the rest of the airport is OK.

btw I really like the new large security build in CPH. I travelled through in 15min after in opened earlier this summer and got Champagne and finger food Big grin

Hi,

Great TR with superb pictures!
I fully agree on your statement that BOB is not up to the Star-Alliance standard.
SK really needs to improve on this!

Thanks for sharing!

They are at the security and in the check-in hall of Terminal 3. If you go upstairs to the security, you are able to see them. But that's not really important^^.

I really appreciate that all of you read my TR and I want to thank everybody for the nice comments.

Security at T3 (and T2) has now been closed down as a new central security point between T2 and T3 opened this summer
