Malev is the only airline to offer non-stop service between Toronto and Budapest. MA started this route in the early 90s on a summer charter basis; it later became a scheduled year-round flight. During the summer peak MA operates 5 weekly flights to YYZ and 3 weekly flights during the winter season. Low loads during the winter season coupled with high costs lead MA to suspended the BUD-YYZ and JFK flights earlier this month. Both trans-Atlantic flights are scheduled to resume in the spring of 2008.
Malev was one of the first Eastern European airlines to acquire Boeing 767s. Malev originally ordered 3 Boeing 767-200ERs with PW engines. That order was later modified to 2 B762s equipped with GE CF6s. The third B762 built for MA was delivered to Royal Brunei Airlines. Malev’s B762s have CF6-80C2B4F engines that provide higher thrust and greater range than some of the earlier built B762ERs.
I have included some pictures from previous years.
Malev Flight 097
Oct 26th 2007
From: YYZ Toronto Pearson Intl. (Terminal 3 Gate 36C )
To: BUD Budapest Ferihegy Intl. (Terminal 2A Gate 46)
Boeing 767-27G ER HA-LHA
Seat 17A Economy
Departure: 23:05 (Delayed 00:15)
Arrival: 13:20 (Dayled 13:27)
Flight time: 7hrs 30 min
Flight Levels: 350, 390
The flight was delayed because the aircraft was late arriving from Budapest. The YYZ ground crews did a great job turning around the aircraft. We taxied to runway 23 without delay and held short due to arriving aircraft on runway 15L. The light B762 climbed quickly to FL350. The flight was smooth even though we had strong tail wind over the Atlantic. The strong winds helped us make up time for the delayed departure.
Shortly after take off drinks were served. MA is known for good service and good quality meals. The FA’s were polite and professional; drinks were served 4 times during the flight along with snacks and water during the in-flight movie.

I fell asleep soon after dinner to be woken by the meal carts being pulled up the aisle for breakfast service. When I woke up I found 3 kit kat bars in my lap that were placed there by the FA during the movie. The breakfast sandwich was pretty bad; I found it somewhat dry and tasteless. We made a quick descent over Slovakia and a very smooth landing on runway 13L. Ferihegy wasn’t very busy which made baggage retrieval quick and painless
Budapest is beautiful city, it is sometimes called "The Queen of the Danube”.
Malev Flight 096

To: YYZ Toronto Pearson Intl. (Terminal 3 Gate C33)
Boeing 767-27G ER HA-LHB
Seat 2G Business

Arrival: 21:50 (Dayled 22:15)
Flight Levels: 290, 320, 350, 380
I was hoping to make the returning flight to Toronto on the new B763, but that aircraft was flying to Bangkok that evening. The aircraft that I flew on to BUD, HA-LHA was already removed from the fleet and was being prepared to join RG. Since the YYZ and JFK flights were being suspended MA’s remaining B762 (HA-LHB) is being wet-leased to Oman Air for the winter. Malev will be receiving another B763 in the spring, which will make MA’s long haul fleet 3 B767s.
BUD was pretty busy on that Friday afternoon. I was very disappointed that the viewing terrace was closed. Boarding started on time but the flight was delayed due to connecting luggage. During boarding process my boarding card was exchanged to a new one with a business seat assigned, having family members who work for MA really helps .
The plane taxied to runway 31L and waited on the runway for a minute or so before take off. The climb to FL 290 was a little bumpy.
There is no personal IFE on Malev’s B762s. The inflight movie was “the Simpsons” which I really wanted to watch but I fell asleep soon after it started. The FAs were constantly coming around offering water and snacks. About 2 hours before landing another meal was served which I had trouble finishing because I was already stuffed. We made a quick descent into a cloudy and rainy Toronto. We landed on RWY 05, it was the smoothest landing that I ever experienced on a B767.
Once again I was very happy with Malev. MA doesn’t compare to BA, LH, UA or any of the major airlines but they offer great service for a low price.
