Thatrnsaid, to start the report, I did not take any pictures on the way therernbecause I don't have a working digital camera, so i used my sisters andrnI did not even know she brought it until we got there. Instead ofrntaking a limo to JFK, we drove from the NJ suburbs to Queens durringrnrush hour. All in all, the ride is not that bad and saves 300 dollars.rnNow, although my family likes to travel, I am completely different. Irnpick up on every detail from the the airline's branding to the dishesrnthey use in economy to the seat, and my family does not even know whatrnairline they're flying on until they get to the airport. Ofcrouse,rnI knew everything about Swiss and knew exactly what to expect, and wasrnhoping I would get in an A340, but unfortunately, the an A330 which isrnnot a bad plane for Swiss, it was concidered one of the premium cabins in 1998, but not in 2007.
Wernget to the airport, eat at the Brooklyn Beer Garden, all warmed uprnfood, but nothing else in Terminal One that was open on a fridayrnnight...pretty pathetic for an international portal. Our flight was atrn9:10 PM which I knew wouldn't actually turn out to be 9:10 PM. I put arnstern warning out to my family to not book the 9:10 knowing that therernwould probably be a two hour back up and that we would indefinatelyrnmiss our connection. But still, I guess normal "sleep hours" are morernimportant than missing a connection so we took the 9:10 when sleepingrnpills don't know what time a day it is. We board the plane, it is okay, rnthe seats are ehh,rnI don't like when airlines put different types of seats on differentrntypes of planes, that is a key feature to branding. You want the samernpattern on every plane, which Swiss has not done, I guess they have tornrefurbished these to the new leather on the narrow bodies or the reallyrnnice design on the A340s and it felt cramped. I was sitting in the rowrnwhere the four seats become three seats due to the curvature of thernplane, and the seats barely reclined. The ptvsrnwere okay, better than having none and they were playing this naturernvideo upon embarkation, which I did not watch, but a nice touch. What Irnlike about the A330 is that it seems tiny! An A321 fits almost aboutrnthe same amount fo people.
At about 9:20 we detatch from the gate. And the head purser whos name was like Lucashetti or something, made an announcement, I remember the announcement cause his name was Lucashetti!rnThen the safety video plays. Although i love some safety videos (I payrnclose attention to the branding of the safety video, it really tells mernabout the airline, I hate when it is boring and bland like almost allrnof the US airlines) and Swiss'srnactually was not that bad. It was no Air France or Virgin Atlantic, butrnI thought them having no music actually helped. I actually enjoyedrnwatching it for some reason, even though some could call it very bland, rni guess cause its European I almost think of it being less bland emedietly.rnAt about 9:50 PM, we leave the T1 gate area. I am getting a littlernapprehensive of missing the flight in Zurich. At about 10:40 PM, therncaptain comes on and goes, "we are just getting into our takeoff cue, rnthere is 20 planes ahead of us". I am like are you kidding me? So now Irnam saying to my family...shoud have listened! At 11:20 the captainrncomes on and says, "takeoffs have been haultedrndo to passing thunderstorms" and now I am thinking, this has to bernMurphy's law. But then suddenly, he clears the crew for takeoff...weirdrnI thought.
We had a turbulent takeoff and meals started aboutrnan hour later. The meal was good, and sorry I love when people takernpictures of meals but I feel that because I am younger than most peoplernon Anet, when other passangers see my snapping a picture of my meal, I just feel weird, idkrnbecause of age or whatever. Anyway, the meal choices were pasta with arnred type sauce which was good (I choose that) and some beef with ricern(which was also good...I took that from my sister because shes not arnbig fan of planefood unlike me). I don't sleep durringrnnight flights because I feel like getting five hours a sleep for me,rnscrews me up even more, so I just did summer reading and watched timernpass. Six hours later, breakfast is served, I am one of the only peoplernwho does not sleep through it.
An hour later we landed atrnZurich, I loved watching us land of what I could see from the centerrnsection, Switzerland seems so nice. We landed at like 12:10, and ourrnflight was supposed to take off at 12:15. So you do the math. Luckly, rnall hope came when I saw our flight was delayed 20 minutes giving usrnlittle time to catch the flight but we still made it. I liked walkingrnthrough Zurichsrnairport, its so fancy and classy. Also, I liked going into the Europeanrnpier because it almost reminded me of walking through a domestic partrnof any other airport I've been to even though Switzerland is not partrnof the Schengen...yet. But still, I really like taking an intra-Europernflight because I did not feel like there was any "Americanism" to it,rnthis was completely intra Europe and it really exposed me to just regualrnflying within another continent...even though flying is flying nornmatter where you go. I really like the LX narrowbody configuration withrnthe Recaro seats. I usually do not like leather seats because as I sayrnagain, they really do not provide the airline with any branding and itrnis not the same thing as leather in a car. But these were really nice.rnI got served a cheese sandwich which was good and ofcourse the LX chocolate. The flight seemed very short and I was finally in Barcelona.
Irntook the train to the city center, we missed the first one due to myrnfamily not listening to me about how to get a ticket. Barcelona Irnthought was a great city. I hate to do touristlyrnthings in cities, and it is not because I don't like art that I don'trngo to art museums (because the last thing I want to seem is one ofrnthose uncultured kids who people go, "They're from America", but I justrndo not have a major interest in art. I can easily spend my time justrnwalking, eating, drinking and exploring. Unlike Paris where one of thernmain things which I loved was taking the metro (the metro in Paris justrnreally gives you a cosmopolitan atmosphere in my oppinion),rnI did not take Barcelona's metro. I loved exploring some of the otherrnneighborhoods besides the Example, even though I loved that area. Irnloved when I got lost one night in the Poble Sec area around the Avenguida de Paralell,rnI really just got to see the locals leading their urban Barcelona life, rnwhen I thought to myself, I really want to move to a city like thisrnwhen I grow up. THernfood was excellent, as I love Spanish cuisine. At that time, I hadrntaken Italian for three years, so my Italian skills were really goodrnand I had taken no Spanish. Unsurprizing, rnonly about 25% of the Spanish population speaks good English duernprobably to the fact that so many other countries speak Spanish.I havernto say, some Barcelona taxi drivers or waiters ect.rnwere not very helping of my lack of Spanish skills (now I have beenrntaking Spanish for three months and know it pretty well) and peoplernalways say the Parisians hate it when you do not speak french, but Irnnever noticed that and most spoke English. One of the days I also wentrnto Sitges, a local suburb/ beach resort which was okay and very overcrouded.rnIt was nice though to see the suburbs of Barcelona, one of my favoriternthings to do in European cities. Here ere are some pictures ofrnBarcelona.
The Hotel Magestic, very nice hotel, located in great area on Passeig de Gracia
Overall, Barcelona is a great city with lots to do and epscially for me, you do not "have to go" see the tourist spots.
A week later, it was time to go back to New Jersey. Dios mio or Oh dio my vacation already was coming to a close. I took a taxi to the El Prat airport, which was a little costly but not too bad. Check-in was normal, went through security was in the shopping/dining area.
I will finish this report later. Suddenly for no reason, a lot of my information sudenly deleted so I really do not feel like re-doing half of the report right now. I will finish what got lost later.
