Did a long weekend in Chicago (my nephew from S. Fla. wanted to see/feel real winter weather) with my partner and my brother & his family. Here are the flights/hotel and some observations.

We spent the night before at the Charlotte Airport Doubletree Hotel - nice enough facility with comfy rooms/beds. My partner, who booked the res, is PM
, so we boarded in Zone 2 or 3 for all flights. We had exit row seats, but the exit row seats on the 738 are very uncomfortable. The middle seat is terribly narrow, the armrests are solid, and the seat cushions are paper thin - why? Exit rows on MD
-88 are much more comfortable. CLT
was fogged completely in, but we left pretty much on time. Short, uneventful flight here, no inflight service, etc and arrived on time. They did drop the LCD
screens and showed the "airshow" graphics the whole way. It keeps one occupied at least! I'm used to flying NW
, so the flights on DL
have been a pleasant change.

On arrival, had to go to another concourse at ATL
to meet the connecting flight, and there we met my brother & his family (wife & 2 young boys), who were with us on the flight to ORD
. They had arrived from FLL
. My partner had redeemed miles for their tickets. We had time to grab breakfast/lunch (it was about 10:30am), and boarded for the flight to ORD
. On this flight, there was the usual beverage service, with a separate snack cart with a choice of peanuts, Biscoff cookies or Lance cheese & crackers. Very pleasant indeed. Arrival at ORD
was uneventful, and our checked bags were at the carousel within minutes of our arrival in baggage claim.
Our stay in Chicago, other than being absolutely frigid (highs in single digits, lows around -5 F), was wonderful. Stayed at the Hilton Suites Magnificent Mile, which appears to have been a Doubletree in the past. We snagged a suite on the 25th floor, and had a decent view of the buildings around us. It's quite lovely swimming in the 29th floor pool and soaking in the hot tub when it's in so cold just outside the windows! During our stay, we did both the Sears Tower and John Hancock building (the latter being basically across the street from the hotel), shopped at the Macy's downtown that used to be Marshall Fields' flagship store, went to the Museum of Science & Industry and ESPN zone during the Chargers/Patriots playoff game, and ate at some great restaurants. It also snowed Fri afternoon & evening and Monday morning. Too soon, it was time to come home.

The snow got pretty heavy while we were waiting for our plane to arrive at ORD
. The snow plows were called out, and did their "conga line" in front the building we were in. At some points, you couldn't see the other end of the field! Our plane arrived about the time we were supposed to start boarding, but turned pretty quickly. The snow had stopped by the time we pushed back, but we had to be de-iced, so that delayed us further. We finally took off, and the flight to ATL
was the pleasant, mirror-image of the earlier flight to ORD
. We arrived a bit late (not sure by how much), and realized our connection was shorter than we had planned, so we said our goodbyes and rushed to our connecting gate, all the way at the very end of the E Concourse-yuck!

When we got to our connecting gate, they should have been making the boarding announcements, but they said that since this a/c had come from Mexico City, it had to be "cleaned & swept" (securityspeak?). It was about another 15 min, then boarding began. We taxied and were in line for takeoff for about 7 min, then off for another short, uneventful trip to CLT
. We flew within sight of our home, Greenville, SC
, which was cool. We frequently fly from CLT
because flights from GSP
tend to be full, and when you can snag a seat, it costs dearly! We arrived a little after 2pm, and waited a while for our checked bag at the carousel, but not nearly as long as we have waited in the past. For some reason, DL
bags take FOREVER to reach baggage claim at CLT
!! We then made our way to the car and drove back to Greenville.
I'm hoping to post some pics, if I can ever figure out how to reduce their sizes. That process stumps me, so I rarely can put pics in my reports. Hope you liked this one. Flying CLT
next weekend on a MR
, so hopefully will post that report as well. Take care!
Great Lakes, great life.
