Review Of The New BusElite On 757

Mon Feb 11, 2008 4:40 pm

Hey all!

Flew in the new BusElite seat yesterday on DL 165 DUB-JFK. I was on N713TW. Seated in 1B. I believe they are the same seats as Virgin America.

Check this out: http://www.airliners.net/uf/view.fil...d=536906418&filename=phpIOHtmK.jpg

Here are my sightings:
- 1A is crew rest with a curtain that slides around the seat but was not used this flight and the FA told me they would use 4A&B which were empty instead
- THERE IS MASSAGE! - but you can't feel it except in the seat bottom and upper back
- Controls for massage and adjustable lumbar (larger/smaller inflation AND up/down back) are in the armrest with the tray table
- NO cocktail trays which makes service interesting as there is also little room between the seats to put a glass
- AVOD is in between the seats and tilts/turns much more than the ones on the 767 making it easier to get out of the way during service
- 2 brightness settings on the personal reading lights
- All lighting is the old style bulbs not the new LED side paneling, reading lights and ceiling lights - new 738 PSU style though
- SEATS ARE FLIMSY! The foot rest rocks back and forth as you move around and while eating when I leaned forward the seat would move up a centimeter or two then lean back again when I did
- Less recline than on the 767s but much more comfortable all around, just wish sturdier
- Condensation leaks from the side-ceiling vents during descent all over 1A and 2A
- AC power port below the PTV arm
- USB and ETHERNET PORTS on the side of the seat facing - Internet coming soon?
- Curved ceiling panels throughout and extended bins
- AVOD nose to tail with the Economy Class getting the same seats on the 738s
- There is a mid-cabin galley on the right side behind row 4CD
- There is no curtain divider between BusElite and Economy

Additional notes, there was a DL Mechanic for the crossing who assisted with the AVOD system at the start of the flight to get it booted up. They do no have safety videos yet, but also lack enough demo kits to do a "live" safety demo so flight attendants would keep walking around doing everything multiple times. There were lots of smiles and joking about this as one flight attendant would "pretend" she had the life vest and was putting it on before another came with one and demonstrated again. The crew also had the "Aircraft Discrepancy List" binder out constantly writing stuff down.

I can't think of anything else besides, as always, DL has terrific FAs and their product keeps getting better! I felt like I needed to be rolled off the plane from all the food.

Cheers!

new 738 PSU style though

Yes, I know some say I am obsessed with PSUs, however, those so-called "737-800 style" PSUs were actually introduced before the 737NG entered service. They are also found on most 757s and 737 Classics made since the mid-1990s. The ex-TWA 757s were made from 1996-2000, so they all feature the newer-style PSUs. Delta also has some other 757s in addition to the ex-TWA aircraft that feature them, most of which are Transcon aircraft. However, they are colored white on Delta's 737-800s and Transcon 757s, while the ones on the ex-TWA aircraft are colored gray.

Good to know about curved ceiling panels though. It makes the cabin look and feel more modern.

Also, I wasn't expecting the seats to feature massage. The seat model is the Recaro CL 4420. Recaro's website states that the massage feature is optional.

TEASE! Come on UpStateDave, you could have shown a few more pics, or maybe even the general "J" cabin layout! Either way, looks good to me. Glad to hear that they had personnel on board to get all the kinks noted and worked out. I would expect in a few months everything will be streamlined and working just fine.

Thanks for the input!

I was hoping to take more shots on arrival in JFK, but used 1L to depart.

I have been thinking, that Ethernet port, maybe its for updating the AVOD instead of possible internet. Just a thought.

There is a better shot of N713TW at TechOps on the web...

Oh, yea... WE HAD 7 FLIGHT ATTENDANTS! The 763 I took over had 8! Seems like a lot of FAs for a 757. We had 2 in J.

I think international flights are required to have more FAs than domestic flights. However, 7 still seems like a lot. On domestic flights, the requirement is one FA per 50 seats. 4 FAs is the norm for a 757 in a two-class config on domestic flights.

On average, how many FAs does CO use on their international 757s?

Not the case. There are probably more flight attendants due to service levels.

Depending on loads in coach as few as 5 and as many as 6. 2 work in BusinessFirst and 3-4 work in coach.

According to the Recaro website, the cocktail tray is actually a pullout panel from the center armrest console just below the screens come out. In your picture, there seems to be a panel there - did you guys try that?

I believe these are already on the ex-Song 752s as well.

That's because the crew that worked DL165 went over to DUB with a 763ER. The inaugural transatlantic on the BE-equipped 757 was on Saturday (Feb 9) - you were on the return of that flight. For the rest of the winter, the 757 will do JFK-DUB only on Thursday and Saturday...this kind of schedule means that they will have to have 763ER-level staffing for the entire trip since one of the legs of this rotation is on a 767.

When the 757 does 'normal' duty, such as on JFK-MAN which started on Sunday Feb 10, or say JFK-FRA daily on March 1, the number of FAs will go down, probably to 5 overall.

You beat me to it Panamair. The cocktail tray is right below the PTV, and above the power ports. You pull it directly out. However, there is only one cocktail tray per every 2 seats.

I see that on the pick, but DL doesn't appear to have them. If you look at my picture, try to imagine that where the PTV support bar is, this tilts 180' when stowed. So I don't think there is room, but I may be wrong as the Recaro site shows that as well. But in any case, none of us found it if it was there. Which makes me believe we need some sort of instruction guide! I wonder how many didn't even try the massage feature as the symbol is a bit ambiguous being that it is just a wave along the back.

I also forgot to note that the seat has a memory feature so if you find a comfy position and then its lunch time, you can move it up then back to your position with a recall button.

No, they are the same type of seats being installed on the 737-800s and domestic 767-300s.
