Weekend In Bratislava (15-17 Feb 2008)

Mon Feb 18, 2008 10:40 am

As all of you already know, last year I went to Bratislava and I was really fascinated by this beautiful city. So I decided to visit it again with two friends last weekend (15-17 february 2008).

BGY (45°40'26"N 09°42'15"E) BTS (48°10'13"N 17°12'46"E) 61° (NE) 635 km
BTS (48°10'13"N 17°12'46"E) BGY (45°40'26"N 09°42'15"E) 246° (SW) 635 km
Total: 1271 km

Total paid EUR 162,00 (3 pax).

I went to BGY in the afternoon

15/02/2008 BGY-BTS
Scheduled 16,50-20,10
Actual Arrival 20,05
Pax 130
Delivered to Ryanair on 11/12/2004

We arrived at BGY airport 1,5 hours prior to departure and (as usual) the airport was very crowded. So passed security controls and reached our departure gate, number 3

After takeoff we banked left for 180 degrees and during the flight the sky became dark.
In the next picture you can see BGY airport, at the bottom of the picture

After landing we changed some money into Slovakian currency and then we bought bus tickets (18 SKK about € 0,55 ). The bus is number 61 and the journey time is about 20-25 mins.
We arrived to the City Hostel (Ochbodnà) and we entered our clean, new and beautiful room.
Then we went out for a walk, we entered a couple of nice pubs and the city was marvellous, but cold.
One thing disapponted me: I live in Italy and here smoking is forbidden in all pubs, bars, discos, almost everywhere. But in Bratislava everybody smoke a lot and in pubs it breathing is very hard!!!
Bars are really cheap. For two medium beers and a coke we paid (the equivalent) of € 3,50. Here in Brescia for one medium beer we pay on average € 4,00!!!!
They also were rally good.
Then we went back to sleep and in the morning it seemed to be sunny.
This is our room in the morning (the hostel is really good).

Then we went out and it was really freezing: the temperature was -4° and the wind was very strong.
We went to the castle, and the sun disappeared. I felt my bones freezing.

The view from the castle

The castle main entrance

Then something began to fall from the sky, but I read on weather forecast that it shouldn't have rained.....so I felt safe. But....

Walking back to the city the snow storm started and it was really really astonishing. The strong wind brought the snow everywhere and in 15 mins there were about 5-7 cms of snow!!!

So we entered Tesco, a mall in the centre of Bratislava. When we went out... a big surprise.
It stopped snowing and the sun was shining!!!! But there still was a strong freezing wind.
Despite of this we decided to stroll around the city which is really really beautiful

Then we went to the main gothic St. Martin cathedral and I took this strange picture of the floor, where you can see the big coloured glasses reflected into.

Around the city

Then it was late, so we went to dinner and again to some pub (very smoky, but nice).

Next morning (sunday 17) we went to Slavìn military cemetery and monument which is at the top of a hill close to the center of Bratislava (about 30 mins walk).
On our way to this site we passed in front of the presidential palace

Then we reached the memorial cemetery which is really peaceful and it makes you think to all those young lives lost in the WW2. The structure helps you to think and it's very important to remember that in the past a lot of people died to give us the chance to live our (beautiful) lives.

There you have a beautiful view of the city and of this strange tower (I think it is an antenna)

When I was there I received a lot of SMS which told me “Welcome to Hungary”, “Welcome to Slovakia”, “Welcome to Austria”, because the cell phone connected Hungarian, Slovakian and Austrian networks.

Then we went back to the city center and we entered the presidential palace gardens

Another short stroll in the city historical center

Then we went back to the city hostel to fetch our luggage (this is the hostel main entrance)

Then, we took the tram number 13 to the train station

Again the bus 61 to Letisko Airport

The airport is quite nice. If you go to the top floor, from the restaurant you have a beautiful apron view.
Our departure gate was number B4.

Quoting F.pier (Thread starter):

The "strange tower" is the Bratislava-Kamzik TV transmission tower, a beautiful piece of architecture from the modern period. I have visited it twice, it has a very good restaurant. For those interested, the restaurant's homepage is http://www.veza.sk/ (in Slovak only, but the menu is also in English and German).
I agree with you about the Slavin cemetery. Thanks for sharing your pictures! I already long for my next visit to the beautiful city of Bratislava. Hopefully, I'll be able to visit Slovakia again in April.
A little bit off-topic, maybe, but: Which Slovak beer did you like most?

.....I don't drink beer. My friends drank it. I drank only Coke (light).
