RE: EVA Airways 747-400 LAX-TPE In Y: Pics, Pics,

Wed Jun 11, 2008 2:16 pm

Thanks for coming along! My Photobucket won't allow any text between the photos, so here's a brief synopsis:

I tried to make the pics tell the story by creating some sort of chronological order - happy to answer any Qs!

EVA was a great way to fly from LAX-TPE and onwards to BKK (a later TR!). The 747-400 was in immaculate condition and we scored seats on the upper deck where the Y-pitch is 35-36".

Cabin crew were really excellent on this flight, despite some reports of 'unfriendly' and 'cold' service, we really found them to be all smiles and very attentive.

The meals were good - I skipped the much-vaunted Chinese rice soup on this sector, and that turned out to be a good decision, as I had it on the way back and it was the most awful Congee I have ever had!

AVOD was really good and easy to use - either cursor-controlled or touchscreen, although the selection was a tad weak.

My only complaint was that there is no bar service prior to dinner, but I think that had more to do with the time of day (take-off was at 02:15am) than anything else.

TPE was extremely easy to transfer in, and all the cabin announcements were given in Mandarin, English and Vietnamese - there was a lot of transfer traffic on to SGN and Hanoi.

This is part of a much longer trip which went on to BKK and HKT, but those will be posted in a separate report...

Thanks for reading - apologies for the lack of banter - comments welcome!

Thank you for your TR. I know they have been doing construction at TBIT for the time...so I'm really looking forward to seeing when they're completed.
LAX is my favorite airport in the US because of all the flights going to and coming from Asia. Whenever I walk through TBIT, I feel like I'm in Japan, Korea or China (now I live in Japan).
I fly AA to NRT from the US now.
And I will look forward to hearing your TR to BKK and HKT.
Have you kissed a 777 today?

Nice set of pictures, thanks.

TBIT has been a dump for some years, hopefully these works will improve it, I fly through it in September, will be interesting to see changes.

- I paste the photobucket ling between text, works fine that way.

- That's quite impressive.

- I know what you mean, but I guess it's fair given the flight time.

Look forward to the next installment.

That's great to hear. I'm flying them in a week for the first time in 7 years (I still remember the FA giving me soymilk instead of milk no matter how many times I asked in Chinese...).

Hey! Nice trip report, I enjoyed the pictures. I didn't know Eva had the new product installed on their 744s. Nice upper deck!

I believe that would be Mandarin, English and Taiwanese (Min Nan Dialect). EVA actually became famous when they first started flying for having announcements in Taiwanese - which really attracted a lot of Taiwanese pax.

Does anyone know if all EVA 744's are equipped with PTV in Y class, or is it only on certain planes?

oops - you're right!

However - my point was really that most of the bags tags going past us from check-in to security screening were for BR connections to BKK and SGN

When we arrived at TPE, there were handwritten signs all over the place in Vietnamese to direct pax to the SGN connection - I guess I assumed the 3rd language on board was that too...

actually the improvements I saw (it's being done piecemeal) looked quite impressive - obviously without rebuilding the structure, you'll never get Suvarnabhumi out of TBIT, but all the same the baggage hall is already much better

yeah - I had to look it up by googling EVA refurbishment - only some of the 744s are equipped - but they are the ones that go to the longest haul flights, luckily! As stated the combis aren't equipped as far as I can tell.

Thanks for the encouraging comments!

They were going to get rid of all the 744's, but no idea why they kept them at the end and upgraded them. Combi's only got the Super First Class removed into Super Business Class.

The renovation looks more into progress now than April, I wonder what will it look like when I go back in August. Great TR.

Thanks for sharing your pics with us! They were great! Does Y class really feel like 34" pitch? If so, I don't mind flying EVA next time to HKG via TPE from EWR.
T4 is my favorite LAX terminal. TBIT is quite shabby.

The upper deck on 747-400 actually has increased seatpitch in Y, probably due to the available space being too short for one more row, so all the rows benefit from extra spacing.

and it actually IS 35"-36" on the upper deck  cloudnine

The 77W really does feel like 34" - in fact there are two seats on that a/c that has extra legroom due to the curvature of the fuselage - 68A and 68K - just be aware that these are window seats in a block of 3!

Personally I prefer the twin seats at rows 69-71 even though they have standard pitch.

I have just today uploaded the videos of the approach and landing at TPE - the landing vid has a quick flash of the Dreamlifter 787 fuselage delivery a/c at the Evergreen Maintenance hangar...

and the landing:

Seriously? I'm short, and even to me, the 77W's seats didn't feel any more spacious than other Y seats I've been in.

LAX isn't a dump, TBIT is. Overall the airport is one of the easiest international airports to fly in and out of and navigate as a pax.

Great TR, I gotta fly them one day but on the 77W because that's what they send to SFO now.

Quoting Triple7man (Reply 2):
LAX is my favorite airport in the US because of all the flights going to and coming from Asia.

You gotta be kidding! Have you flown into SFO? It's clean, passport control is a breeze, immigration and customs officers actually smile at you and say hi, you don't have to be bussed like U do in LAZ (some cases), I could go on and on all day as to why SFO is the premier Asia gateway.

No, 77W has one seat design, A332 and 747 have another design. I think.

When I fly back home, I mostly use UA or AA. It's about 10 minutes from getting off the plane to getting in the car. And about 30 min vice versa. I agree that LAX is nothing special compared to some of the other worlds leading airports but it's a quick in and out. I'd rather do that then hangout at the nice terminals with shopping centers for hours because of delays, ie SFO.

pics will be back up soon...maybe i'll just pay for the extra bandwidth  Wink

I consider SFO, DFW, ORD, JFK, and ATL to all be superior to the total dump they call LAX. Only LHR is substantially worse than LAX IMO.
