Day Trip To LGW/Epsom/ Ground Movements Pics+Vids

Sun Jun 15, 2008 8:59 pm

Well it was my Mums birthday so doing my duty I took a flight to spend the day with her. The best times for me happened to be with Ryanair and it cost me all of EUR28 All in !! Cant go wrong with that for a 1 hour flight. I looked at BA and the cost was EUR160 !! Just could not justify it.

DATE : 10/JUN/2008

ROUTE : DUB-LGW

FLIGHT : FR 112

A/C : B737-800

REG: EI-DAF

After an uneventful fight it was time to land. I slept for most of the flight.

After that it was time to take the train to Epsom.

Nice station with old phone box along the way

Finally after 50 mins I arrived in Epsom

I met my Mum and Sister and went to a Indian restaurant for Lunch . When we got there it was just opened .

And finally my meal.... lovely Curry.

Epsom

After a nice day shopping and spending time together , giving my Mother her presents it was time to get the train back to LGW.

DATE : 10/JUN/2008

ROUTE : LGW-DUB

FLIGHT : FR 1127

A/C : B737-800

REG: EI-DAF

After passing through security which took no time at all it was time to look at the shops. LGW has a good selection including a discount Nike store and Dixons electronics.

I had been reading up on this new mini laptop and I will probably buy it soon . Its less than 1 kilo in weight and half the size of a normal laptop. I had a good play with it and was impressed. The price was impressive also.

After a while time to go to the gate. The flight was delayed 1 hour but after that it was time to board. I had Priority boarding which makes a difference IMHO.

I got onboard and sat down. I had a Window and the two seats next to me were empty. Also 4 rows behind me were also empty. This guy then comes and sits down next to me . I dont mean leaving the middle seat free I mean literally next to me. I thought this a bit weird seeing as there were lots of rows/seats free. Anyway after everyone had boarded I moved to a new seat and had a row of 3 to myself. I was quite tired by this stage so wanted my space.

Again another un eventful flight I slept a bit . I didnt bother with buying anything .

When I got to Dublin the immigration ques were crazy . I had to get into a snaking line which took 20 minutes to pass. They really need to have a seperate line for passengers arriving from the UK due to the CTA agreement.

I also missed my Bus up North so I had to wait until the next one at midnight. Pics of DUB at around 2330 . It was nice and empty. The shops and restaurants on the upper level were open though and alot of people were there. Some flights to Eastern Europe go at that time.

So thats it . Not a major trip or an exciting airline but none the less I enjoyed it alot and of course seeing my Family again.

Thanks for reading and as usual nice to get all comments .

Hi, Philip,

thanx for posting this story.
A good impression about what to see at LGW nowadays.
And also nice to view your destination pics, sounds you had a good time there with your family.

Always nice to bring duty und flying together!.

Btw, both flights on the same plane, it seems FR goes also forward with this shuttle concept.

Nice report Philip!

That Indian restaurant looks good and so does the curry which is what matters most! Nice photos of LGW and DUB, in the last photo what airline did those self service machines belong to or was it just all Skyteam airlines?

Thanks for sharing,
Kevin.

Hello Philip, thanks for the good report!

I really loved the pics of Epsom, it looks like a lovely town. I actually flew on the same A/C in November, i also had the exact same seat as you had on the first flight. The Curry by the way looked really delicious.

Thanks for sharing.

Great TR Philip enjoyed reading it!

Nice pics of LGW,DUB and that FR cabin.

That was the FR 738 that I was on to SNN parked next to your a/c EI-DAF, can't say I expected to see a photo of that a/c on here less than week later, if I had known I could have waved...... Big grin

Very bizarre to see photos of Epsom in a trip report...but I guess the same could be said by anyone who sees photos of their local area being visited!!  Wink I'm guessing that as you passed through Boxhill & Westhumble that you got a train from LGW to Dorking Deepdene?

That curry looks nice though, what's the name of the restaurant? It looks like it may have been that restaurant that used to be a really nice pizza place.

Nice that you got one of FR's older aircraft too - IMHO they're so much more comfortable than the newer ones.

Thanks for the report.

LOL... I love Epsom I have to say and there are not too many English towns I like. It is clean, safe and my Mum loves it there. Really nice selection of shops and restaurants also.

I got the train from Gatwick to Horsham then switched to the Epsom train. Connections all went well and a return ticket was £8.50 return. I was very impressed.

Hey Philip, nice TR as always. I am getting a bit worried by this sudden love affair with FR though. After all those LX J class reports we're used to seeing swiss chocolates and fresh coffee, not a maxwell house & kit kat!!!

Horsham being where I live, and you would've gone past my house too  Silly

Indeed it is interesting to see a town we visit quite often on an internet site such as this!

Thanks for providing an idea of what I can expect on FR's older aircraft.

Loved the TR. Epsom seems like a beautiful small country town that i would like to visit when i come to england.

Indian food in England is the 2nd best place to eat it, obviously right behind India...hehehe!!

Can't believe the difference in the price of tix, 28 vs 160.

If one lands in heathrow, whats the best way to reach epsom??
come fly with me

Good report.

BA Viscount - judging by your profile, you are too old to venture into Revolution, even though I will admit the talent looks incredible on a Friday night.

As for Epsom, OA260, I would be grateful if you tell me the location of the Indian restaurant featured in your report. Digressing, I can't believe the train from Gatwick cost £8.50.

As for the red phone box at Boxhill and Westhumble station, I think it could do with a lick of paint but hopefully it will be left in place as a reminder of yester year.

And yes, Epsom is quaint.

Epsom is nice, but I wouldn't go that far! It's really just an outer suburb of London! I wouldn't trip over yourselves to get there folks, unless you've got a dear old Mum to visit there that is!  Wink

Yes the fare was great. If I had have gone Via Clapham Junction it would have cost GBP20 !! So London best avoided. Its a nice town but if your a tourist probably not worth the hike. There are nicer places. Try Kew Gardens in West London near LHR. Its very nice there also. The traditional Tea rooms are opposite Kew also.

As for Jimmys Spices its just across the road from Epsom Train station and the Co Op mini market. Set back a bit.

Great Report Phillip!

I still find it unbelievable how Ryan's LCC model can allow it to charge fares such as EUR28!

That Curry looks scrumptious by the way...YUM!
