Pleasant Suprise On My Last Air Canada Flights

Sat Jul 05, 2008 2:24 pm

On July 2nd, I flew from SFO-YYZ-YQR. Yes, I know that many of you will look at the routing and go WTF? But all I can say it was $500 cheaper than booking it through I'm a Canadian but my last experiences flying AC (2004,20050 were less than pleasurable experiences. So saying that, I was very pleased to see how clean the A319 from SFO-YYZ was. And to my pure enjoyment, there was the inflight entertainment system at EVERY SEAT!! It was so nice just to have to touch the screen and watch what I wanted to. They had a good selection of all types pf movies and tv shows and other. I also splurged and bought the roast beef sandwich which was VERY good. The Flight attendants were pleasant and helpful (so unlike my previous trips) and that made it an amazing flight. The flight on the CR7 from YYZ-YQR, same thing, entertainment at each seat. WOW! Now if I could only get people from United to fly AC and see what CAN be offered on every plane. Looking forward to my return home, and NO, I am not going back to Toronto, I get to fly to YQR-YVR-SFO. The flight from YVR-SFO will be my first trip on the new Embaraier and am now looking forward to it even more!

Interesting observations from an AMerican (?) traveller on AC.

I just did another YOW-YVR-YOW rotation (usually 4x per year) and again AC staff were at their best:

-ground stop in YOW June 26 for 1.5 hours (thunderstorm)
-full A321
-several squally babies on board (all of whom seemed to be close to me but likely a subjective interpretation)
-turbulence for about 3 hours, ranging from mostly light to moderate over the prairies -- causing the young lady directly ahead of me to have air sickness, adding to the ambience
-forward cabin too hot, rear cabin cold enough that blankets were brought out

I find that contrary to what many in the public tend to report, the AC staff, esp. in-flight staff, are very professional in their jobs. They are getting that, esp. since CCAA in 2003, everyone is in this together. It kind of sucks that 2,000 people are going to be laid off after all the give backs, but $150 oil will do that.

The AVOD system (when it works) is pretty good. I watched 'Vantage Point' westbound, very interesting film. Eastbound I had my nose in a book all the way, didn't touch the AVOD. But it is very popular. I assume AC will start charging for the service at some point.

So all of you out there, maybe try AC for your next trip to/from Canada.
(I do not own any shares in ACE !)

I have the impression that AC has always been better than some of the US carriers. I flew AC YYZ-LGA in 2006 and free newspapers were distributed to passengers. Now contrast that to AA whose staff even chase you down the door of Admirals Club lounge if you take out their newspaper!! How cheap!!

I've managed to convince several of my co-workers to fly AC over UA or AA when they fly to Canada. Prices are the same with much better service.

You liked that? Guess we have different tastes then when it comes to roastbeef sandwiches  Smile.

Lucky you, on my recent trip, I haven't seen a pleasant F/A on 4 legs. They were professional and did their job, yes, but no smile, ordering an OJ instead of a coffee after lunch was considered a personal offense, and after my arm was touched by the trolley, which I didn't even actively noticed, I received a VERY offensive "watch your arm"-snapping by that F/A.
Well, tough luck with the F/As, I suppose. Overall the trip was fine, it was just the small things that were missing  Smile.
WARNING! The post above should be taken with a grain of salt! Furthermore, it may be slightly biased towards A.

I keep telling that AC is improving to everybody, but nobody would believe me. I fly with them a bit, as AC 7703 this morning was my segment # 34 with AC this year and the overall experience is very good. Yes, you may still meet somebody that doesn't have his/her best day, but that's rather rare experience nowadays. They still aren't the happy bunch as WS employees are, but it may be an different way of life/work/service. As far as food and drinks are concerned, the BOB food is a bit pricey for it's size, but hey, it's served at FL380 (at least mine was today), so it's OK. Soft drinks are still complimentary, if you ask for a whole can, you'll get it with a smile. I don't drink beer while flying with AC, since I won't pay $ 6 for a can of Canadian. That may change, since QK is starting to serve our beer, so I hope it will find it's way to the mainline too. Booze for $6/ 50 ml is cheaper than in bars.

Last time I flew with AC was in 2007 YVR-YUL-YVR. The flights were about 5 hrs, and I also found the service to be excellent. Yes, I got a BOB roast beef sandwich, which was very good. The flight YVR-YUL left around 1030am, so I really wasn't hungry. However, they did two rounds of BOB, about 2 or 3 hours apart, which was a good idea. I was hungry by the second time around.
Same on the way back, 2 full services and quality of good really quite good. The crews on both were super friendly, and no complaints at all about the service. The aircraft was 763 both ways, and very clean and well-maintained. I could care less about whether it has PTV or XM'd interior, and it was neither, but still comfortable and I could find no fault. I took a look at the front section, J class, though, and it really looked like it needed a refurbishment badly, which has probably been done by now.
Having flown AC across the Atlantic the previous year, I actually thought the domestic service was better. Having said that, I also flew YVR-SYD-YVR, at that time still via HNL on a 763. The service on that run was outstanding. I was in Y all the way. The meals, in particular out of SYD were excellent, best quality meal I have had on a plane in years. The overall service was much better than Transatlantic.

I last flew AC in August last year on the LHR-YYT-LHR route, and have nothing but good things to say about both flights. The crew on both flights were super-friendly, in fact one F/A worked the aisle and took the time to stand and chat for a while with passengers on the LHR-YYT flight, asking about travel plans and giving tips on where to go and what to do in Newfoundland. And on the YYT-LHR flight, once the crew had recognised my liking for vodka, every so often they'd stop by with another couple of miniatures and a full can of Coke...without me even having to ask (and this was in Y)!!

The food was perfectly adequate given the length of the flight (5 hours there, 4.5 hours back) and although I thought the AVOD system could have had more options, I found enough to keep me amused.

All in all, a great couple of flights.

Ive had my fair share of grumpy old F/A's and a non XM'd 763 for the relatively long YVR - LHR is not the most pleasant experience (I actually prefer Zoom over this), but having just flown on a 319 and CRA, both were great flights. The Jazz F/A particularly was very smiley and really seemed to love her job. The service was certainly no worse than WS as many make them out to be, and those CRA's are actually pretty comfy, if a bit noisy at the rear on take off.
