HNL-ORD-OKC UA 002 First Class Pics And Vid

Tue Jul 08, 2008 8:12 pm

Hello everyone! Welcome to part two of my Hawaii adventure, the coming home! Honolulu was great. I met up with a high school classmate of mine who is the lead violinist in the Honolulu Symphony and we had a wonderful time. I stayed at the Halekulani Hotel which is one of the best hotels on Waikiki. It was out of this WORLD! My room didn't have much of a view though, but seeing as I made my reservation the day before I arrived, I didn't have much choice, all of the full ocean front view rooms were taken, let alone the Diamond Head views. Oh well.....

Here are some pics from the hotel:

If you ever head to Waikiki I really recommend this hotel. The rooms are modest, sort of minimalist in nature, but the restaurants, the staff, and the hotel jazz bar is to die for.

I had arranged for a car to take me to HNL from my hotel. It took about 30 min through Waikiki, past downtown Honolulu, and we were at the airport. I arrived about 1h30m before departure for UA002 to ORD. I snapped some pics of check in.

This is a pic of economy check in. First Class check in was totally cleared of anyone, so I just walked right up and was checked in very quickly.

I stopped at the Burger King.....and had a seat by the window and had a Whopper and some fries and a coke and started snapping pictures. Honolulu is great for variety as it's full of widebodies, but still rather low key. The airport really does need some updating as it is VERY 60's/70's, but it has a very "Hawaii" feel to it.

An AA 767, heading to DFW I believe..and another 777 of UA arriving, from where, I don't know.

A NW 757-300....damn those things are LOOOONG!

UA 777 taxiing to a gate adjacent to mine

Closer shot of the AA 763

Some other shots:

I LOVE this picture of the Continental 764 with the 757 with winglets next to it. Does anyone know where the 757 flies to? I'm assuming that the 764 was headed to either EWR or IAH

Here you can see the majestic 777 tail of my plane to ORD sticking out behind the jetway. Such a great looking tail. Something about it, it's very tall, but very thin....very sleek indeed!

The open air terminals of HNL airport! SO lovely and such a good way to get intimate with the aircraft and spot!

Ahhh! The jewel of the day, a NW A333....I'm assuming from MSP, not sure. Could anyone clarify?

Okay, I got to my gate, which I believe was gate 9, and I saw this servicing truck underneath the 777 and I thought it was on fire! It was really either steaming or smoking really bad before I took this shot. It kind of tamed down when I took the picture.

My ride home...

Boarding for first was rather swift of course, however we entered from door 2A and walked forward.

I thought these next two shots were kind of neat because you get a good look at the forward cargo hold door on the 777. That thing is MASSIVE!

Push back...

Our pilot informed us that we would be taking off on the "Reef Runway" he sort of explained a little history of the runway and that it was typically used for heavy jets like our own and sometimes emergency landings, etc. He also informed us that there are fighter jets in the area doing military exercises, so if we saw any of them, to not be alarmed. I thought it would be quite neat to see one, but I didn't. Maybe others on the other side of the aircraft did. Here's the video of the take off. Everyone has to loooove any variation of the 777 engines spooling up!

Shortly after take off

Unfortunately, channel 9 was turned off for this flight, so I don't have any interesting info from it...but of course, we had the pre-departure champagne or mamosa and some drinks were served right after take off. I opted for the red wine.

Trader Vick's was again on the menu, but this time I got the beef tenderloin, it was quite good

After dinner we were served chocolate icecream, and I had a Bailey's and Coffee to go along with it

Sun starting to set over the central Pacific

The flight was rather uneventful over the water. Really smooth and here is the first pic of landfall. It's hard to see, but you can see lights:

Of course, in first, it seems like they keep pouring drinks down your throat. The service was extremely professional and always prompt. At one point I ask the flight attendant in a joking manner, "Are you trying to get me drunk?!" She laughed and said, "Well, you can always say no!" and she giggled.

We left Honolulu at 4:28PM HST and arrived at ORD at 5:04AM CDT with a flight duration of 7h36m. It's funny because I usually can flight even IAH-CDG in about the same time! Such a long flight, but it's sooo fun to hear those 777 engines whirring along in an amazingly quiet cabin!

Here we are pulling up to gate C17, (i think?!?)

I had a 3.5 hour layover until my flight to OKC so I decided just to shoot some pictures, so enjoy!

The crazy gay pride tunnel in the United Concourse!  Wink

TED and Continental

I walked over to the American Terminal to grab some shots, I mean, what else are you going to do witth 3 hours in Chicago.

I went down to gate K12 to snap some shots of the AA 777, which I probably believe arrived from DEL and was headed out on the 9:00AM departure to LHR. At that part of the terminal you can really get a good view of the 777's MASSIVE size. So I tried to take some terminal/aircraft comparison shots to give some good examples of how really big this aircraft is. Oh, and AA777, if you are viewing this, I took these for you! HAHA!

And here's a nice winglet shot of an AA 757. It makes that aircraft even sexier!

The flight to OKC wasn't really worth posting about. It was on an ERJ of UA Express. No first class on that flight. I think it was blocked at 2h10m but we made it in 1h45m with a direct approach from the north into Will Rogers. The flight had light to moderate chop all the way. Sort of annoying, but nothing to write home about.

I have a landing video of the 777 in ORD, but it was really dark and you can't see much, but if you want, I can upload it to youtube and post later.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this trip report as much as I had writing it and flying it!

Great TR once again, UAL. I appreciate the tribute to the AA777s.... I know you know that the T7 looks better in AA's colors anyways  Wink

Cool shots of the underground walkway in ORD....

...and Trader Vicks? I'm a little jealous. I ate there once in London, and it was excellent. Hope you enjoyed that meal!

Hmm, that is strange. You actually departed from 22L and not the reef runway. You can see the reef runway pass underneath after liftoff. I believe 22L heavy departures are pretty rare, so that was neat to see. Nice report again.

You know, after looking at the video, I agree, it wasn't the reef runway. Which was odd, because I clearly heard him saying that and was sort of varified by the person sitting next to me, because she commented about doing the reef runway departure....maybe they changed things around during taxi, but you are exactly right, it wasn't the reef. I wish they had Channel 9 on, then I would have known for shizzle...

Great report!

As mentioned earlier, that was not the reef runway. When the trade winds shut off as they did here in HNL yesterday, aircraft will take off to the Southwest. This probably happens only about 10% of the time in a year.

I have to tell you, the food on UA has really gone down hill! Your meals in both directions looked pretty bad! I know you said it was tasty but compared to other carriers, it looked very low end for F class.

It's always a pleasure to read trip reports to and from my home so thanks again for doing one. I enjoyed it.

Nice follow up!

Did you have to leave the secured area to go to the AA terminal at ORD? If not I didn't realise the two were connected airside...

I was going to say the same thing! A Reef Runway departure looks something like this:

Yeah, you can walk directly between the two terminals and still be in the secured area. However, going to the international terminal, I do believe you have to exit security and take the train.

Where was the NW 747-400 flying to? I was surprised to see it at HNL because of it's range. Prior to the 747SP, 747-400 and 777, and other long range aircraft, the 747-100 and 747-200 for the most part did not have the range to fly trans Pacific and HNL was almost always a stopping point to refuel and change crews.

Even though you took this one for someone else I'm glad you included it. K12 is a great place at ORD to view AA 777

great TR! Glad you had fun, but I must say my food from ORD-SEA (last time I flew UA) in F looked much better. Must just be your camera because I love...

Trader Vics

One is about 20 min from my house and I looove to eat there. MMMM!

Back on topic

I would expect more on a long flight like that. Isnt it like 8 hours?

I mean in F from IAD-LHR you get a lot more and its a shorter flight. UA should ramp up its F to Hawaii, but times are tough now so I give them a break.  Wink

Nope, you can travel anywhere from the UA terminal to AA terminal to DL/other airlines terminal. No security check to the AA terminals and other terminals. That was cool to walk around three terminals and i love it. Man...that was a long way for me to walk and my legs/feet were killing me...I almost lost my way hehe.

Yes, you are right I think. Didn't check, but I think the only widebody they do to HNL now is the A333 back and forth to MSP. Otherwise you have to change planes in SEA or LAX. Last time I flew NW to HNL (at least ten years ago) -- we went through SFO on a DC10-30, but think they dropped that trip too along with the DC-10's.

Your UA FC meal looks yummy to me. Am a bit anxious to see what we get on AA next week up front from DFW. Last fall it was pretty much the same as previous times -- pre-board champagne, nuts/drinks, two entree choices, salad service, ice cream sundaes, or fruit/cheese -- and a pre-landing snack - more fruit/cheese/crackers. But, with cut backs?? We shall see. . .

Thanks again, so enjoyed it. I just love the HNL airport also. Dated, but part of its charm.

NW has 4 daily widebody operations at HNL. There are two daily flights from NRT. One on a 747-400 and one on an A330-300. There is also a daily flight from KIX on a 747-400.

Yeah, I saw an ANA 777-300ER and a picture of that is in my first trip report which is on the trip reports forum OKC-ORD-HNL. Though, I only caught it from afar. Other than that, I really didn't see much at ORD other than domestic based airlines and Air Canada. I was at the airport during weird times before many of the international heavies started arriving or departing. I arrived at ORD from HNL at 5:00AM so not much activity there.

Yeah, I believe that is a -500 with winglets. It's definitely not an NG.

Yeah, that is the Embassy Suites behind my hotel. The pool at that hotel was always jammed with people and they played REALLY loud music.

My hotel was fabulous and the area, beachfront Waikiki you can't get any better than that.

I was thinking the same thing. It's nice to hear it at least tasted good- but the presentation is awful. Did they serve a salad at least before the entree?

Even the tray setup looks cheap from what I've had before on Hawaii flights. Sad.

Yeah, the pool always was crowded, I remember that. Although, I don't remember much in the way of music. But most of my time spent in the pool was at night. I loved the area also, a great area btw for anyone planning on going to HNL.

Well, yeah, pretty much ALL widebody there because of the location and it being a HUGE leisure destination. It's a very casual airport, which is great, but if you like widebodies, then you're in luck.
