SYD: Welcome To Australia

Thu Jul 31, 2008 11:33 pm

Hello,

Yesterday I flew in on flight SQ221 from Singapore on the A380 - the flight was great (as to be expected) but SYD was a disaster - after going trough immigration which was fine we went to pick up our bags - 20min from the arrive of the first until the last one and then Conveyor Belt 1 broke down (JL flight) and suddenly all hell broke loose. As at the same time as us JL, KE and SQ (and another but I forget), the customs was too busy so they sent a large amount of passengers through the side way, now I had food to declare (but nothing I wouldn't have been able to have) but they still let me through. After that we had to get through the swarm of people to the bus which took us to the Domestic Terminal - $5.50 - ridiculous. After coming from Zurich and Singapore where it is free they expected us to pay $5.50 each to get on a dingy bus to Domestic. It was embarrassing! I felt ashamed that all the tourist arriving had to go through such a disorganised and crappy airport. I only flew into SYD to go on the A380 but I wont be doing it again!

Trueman,

I can so relate to your rant about SYD. It isn't one of the best in the world and it is obviously bursting at its seams. The arrival time frame of the A380 coincides with some of the busiest movements in the beginning of the morning arrival bank from Asia ie. heavies, widebodies etc...

That being said, public transportation in Australia is expensive generally so the issue of paying $5.50 for the bus ride to Domestic isn't just confined to SYD. The train ride to town costs more that $10.00 when back here in Singapore, no more than $1.60 and the trains here are cleaner, quieter and more comfortable.

But hey, you got on the A380!!!! Everyone has but me!
Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

TruemanQLD,

SYD isn't one of the best in the world during peak hours when all the airlines (SQ, CA, CX, EK, KE, BA, QF) ex-Asia & ex-Middle East arrive at the same period. If customs let you through, just go through. They are just doing their job to reduce the backlog. They are more keen on catching travellers who bring in live animals, plants and seeds.

Yes, but at SIN you can get between every terminal (maybe not LCC) for free... $5.50 to get between terminals is a bit ridiculous

SYD is an end-point O&D airport. People who go through Sydney Airport go there cos they have to get to Sydney. As such Sydney Airport is in a position to rip passengers off. In such cases though, a strong regulator should be in place to make sure the airport operator does not abuse its monopolistic posiiton. Luckily for Macquarie Airports, they paid a huge sum of money for SYD back in 2001 and the Australian government is hesitant to clamp down on their anti competitive behaviour.

(I'm sure MacBank worked all these clauses nicely into the contract when they bought the airport from the government. After all in 2001 there was no resources boom and the Australian government didn't have huge amounts of revenue from mining taxes and what not, and would have gladly accepted the highest bidder - just my personal opinion)

SIN is a hub airport and has heaps of competition from other hub airports from Dubai to Bangkok. A significant proportion of people who come to SIN are just passing through and besides QF and SQ via SIN to Europe, they can choose TG via BKK, CX via HKG etc. As such, hub airports competing for the same traffic tend to "self-regulate" in terms of passenger fees and prices.

Yes - but no. What for all the passengers who want to travel to NZ or Domestic?

It still doesnt give them the right to rip me off!

International flights depart out of T1, you don't need to transfer to domestic.

If you didn't want them to rip you off, you could have have flown directly to BNE. The charges are on the Sydney Airport site.  Wink
