VS To DXB Looking For The EK 380

Sat Aug 02, 2008 6:01 pm

Hello Dear readers, thanks for dropping in  Smile

I had decided to join Emirates for their A380 first flight, this is the first of 3 reports detailing my travels.

The plan was to leave the UK Thursday evening and be back in London Saturday afternoon after some 26 odd hours in the air.

dropped me off outside Heathrow’s T3 just before 19:00, certainly looks much better here than last time I passed through, looking back, that too was in search of an A380 flight!

The regular VS check-in line looked pretty long, but Upper Class had few people waiting. Despite 5 agent’s checking passengers in, it did take some 5 minutes to get checked in, there seemed to be issues with the passengers ahead of me…………
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/VS400%20310708/VS400310708010.jpg
VS have a priority security screening area for premium passengers, you take the lift to the right of the check-in desks, scan the bar code on your boarding pass and it let’s you into the priority screening point, fantastic!

Once through, you still have to join the masses to have your passport checked, then remove your shoes for secondary screening – still dubious to the point in this!

Once in the shopping mall I realised why I dislike T3, people everywhere, you can’t get where you want in a hurry, the queue in WH Smith was huge, almost to the point in do you really need to purchase this stuff?? ( I am now on EK3801, 3 hours from JFK and have still not used the stuff I bought!)

Not wanting anything else I decided to head out to the lounge.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/VS400%20310708/VS400310708014.jpg
First impressions, nice and airy, liked the waiter service and selections of food, they seemed on a par with BA’s Gallaries.

Unfortunately the roof garden remains closed following the fire smokers started, it’s always the minority that spoil things for the majority!

I decided to have a small snack as I’d not eaten much during the day.

It was whist eating I noticed the lounge was quite noisy, piped music was played and if you were close to a TV, you had the noise from that too.

Boarding was announced at 20:14, the flight departing from gate 34 which was a 10 minute walk.

Boarding was quick and easy as Upper Class and Premium Economy had a separate line to queue jump, I was soon aboard with a nice glass of champagne – though it was slightly on the warm side.

Crew seemed friendly enough and asked each passenger if they had flown Upper Class before, if the needed help with the seat, in addition they asked if we wanted to eat or sleep – I decided to eat.

Push occurred a few minutes late, the captain having already advised due to paperwork issues, what ever that means, additionally he announced today’s flight time would be 6h 25 minutes, I’ll be timing that.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/VS400%20310708/VS400310708040.jpg
Push occurred at 21:06 and we began a taxi over to 09R for this evening’s departure, our turn taking place and wheels up at 21:23 local time.

Once the crew were released dinner orders were taken and Fast Track vouchers were issued to speed our way through DXB, the amenity pack was pretty poor, basically a shoe bag with eye shades and a pack with a toothbrush and toothpaste, that said the crew did come around with a basket offering additional items such as raisers, pens and polo’s! – I took a pen and the polo’s – easily pleased me!
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/VS400%20310708/VS400310708038.jpg

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/VS400%20310708/VS400310708053.jpg
Around 25 minutes into the flight hot towels were issues, almost an hour later these had not been collected nor had any drinks been served.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/VS400%20310708/DSC07483.jpg
Roughly 1 hour into the flight my meal arrived, drinks served shortly afterwards. I took the chicken. The meal was nice enough, portion perfect for the time of flight, though the chicken was slightly on the dry side.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/VS400%20310708/VS400310708052.jpg

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/VS400%20310708/VS400310708057.jpg
After dinner I walked the plane, Premium Economy was full, Economy had only a handful of empty seats. I note the seat fabrics have been changed in economy, now much more tasteful than last time I flew down back with VS.

After the walk I sat at the much touted bar and had a drink or 2 with the crew and a few other passengers.

I have to say the bar is not quite as impressive as I thought and found the area more of a work area for the staff than a relaxation area for UC passengers, that said, it was nice not to be stuck in your seat for the entire flight. I again noted the champagne was not that cold, the crew advised there seemed to be an issue with cooling the drinks – I noted wine & champagne being delivered with ice in the glasses to cool it down!

Not sure what the time was but the seat belt sign came on and we retired to our seats, I reclined, took out the duvet and dropped off after a few pages of my book.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/VS400%20310708/VS400310708055.jpg
1 hour before arrival breakfast was served, I took the fresh fruit, OJ, omlette with chicken sausage, mushrooms and grilled tomato, was ok, fruit was the best part, seemed nice and fresh, well chilled, overall not the best breakfast I’ve had on a plane, the coffee was not too good either.

A freshen up in the and we were on finals for DXB, on finals you could see new land being created in the sea, tonnes of sand being piled up to create islands, fascinating!

My next ride  Smile
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/VS400%20310708/VS400310708079.jpg
10 minutes later before we pulled into a remote stand next to A7-BAA, nice, my first sighting of a QR 77W.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/VS400%20310708/VS400310708078.jpg
Being on a remote stand we had the pleasure of being bussed in one of the much discussed Dubai Airport busses, these covered in decals making photo’s nigh on impossible.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/VS400%20310708/VS400310708081.jpg
Exit from the aircraft was like walking into a blast furnace and it was only 7am, hell, can’t imagine what it’s like a lunch time!

The immigration queue’s were pretty small, and I was through with a stamp in my passport less than 10m minutes after stepping off the plane, pretty good, had envisaged massive queues.

Once through passport control your bag’s have to be x-rayed before you can proceed, after that out into the blast furnace again to find check-in for the real quest in this journey………………………..

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed the trip so far, next part, EK3801 to follow!

Kind Regards

Mark

Hello Mark, thanks for the report, it was very interesting to see a VS J report on the forum. To me the food on VS J seemed a bit poor, i thought that they would have served more for breakfast. I'm really looking forward to your next report!

Excellent TR! loved it.

Good to know VS had a full flight on the LHR - DXB sector as it is competing with 2 dailies of BA and 5 dailies of EK along with BI as well.

thanks for the picture of the QR B77W, just validates my assumption that it does multiple quickies from DOH to DXB.

Mark,
Thanks for another lovely TR. I enjoy your voyages very much and the way you write honestly and descriptively. You definitely remind me of the best, Abrelosojos, FBGDavidson, Carfield...and a few other's..

I've heard similar comments about VS. It's not all touted up to what it suppossedly is. It's disappointing to see they don't provide a nice amentity kit. I thought they would have with some high end products (do they offer these in addition to the other items you mentioned?). BA definitely is the best (I've always had pleasant trips with them in CW x3 and BA First x1).

Warmly

- Thanks for the kind words Jeb  Smile

Quoting LACA773 (Reply 11):
I've heard similar comments about VS. It's not all touted up to what it suppossedly is. It's disappointing to see they don't provide a nice amentity kit. I thought they would have with some high end products (do they offer these in addition to the other items you mentioned?). BA definitely is the best (I've always had pleasant trips with them in CW x3 and BA First x1).

- It's funny, economy get a reasonable little pack as their amenity pack, so UC's offerings inc the stuff on the trays, small moisturisers, raiser etc, seems a little lame.

Regards

Mark

Hi Mark,

thanks for a new interesting story. Interesting to see VS in Business-Class. The arrangement of the seats makes it difficult to look outside, or am I wrong?

Looking forward to the next part.

Cheers,
Stefan

- Correct, in my seat I had to swist my head/body over 90 degrees to see out of the window. Those who like looking out of the window on day flights really won't like this.

Mark, I've been reading your reports backwards!

Another superb job and interesting to see the VS UC perspective from another BA regular. I'm amazed at the need to put ice in champagne/wine to keep them cool, that'd ruin the taste completely! I'm surprised there was no way to jury-rig some form of ice box for the drinks needing to be kept cool. The food also looked pretty poor, even compared to the fairly unremarkable 'cuisine' I had in Club World last week across the pond.

I still really should give VS UC a chance some day. A few here have told me to try it out but to be honest it doesn't seem that much better to tear me away from BA. Maybe once I'm in a blackhole between the tier points needed for something good after renewing BA Gold and I've got too many miles to care about I'll give it a shot. However, after reading your report I'm glad I recommended BA Club World over Virgin UC for my father the other day...

I agree on your comments from the other report about DXB. I flew into/out of there on BA in May and didn't think it was that good. Plenty of walking from the arrival gate to immigration inbound although priority immigration was good. On the outbound though it is a mess. Why the need for checked bags to be searched, then umpteen boarding pass and security checks? Once you get out to the central terminal thing it is unbelievably busy!!!

- I'm happy I took this flight, more so as I prefer the A340 over 777's, she is so so quiet! Plane aside, VS would not be the first choice up front though would likely be so along with BA if travelling in economy.

Another great report, Mark. But I'm a bit disappointed about VS' premium product - and that's not just because I read your EK report first.  Wink Seats, amenities, food - there seems to be a lot to improve on VS.

Don't get me wrong, it's ok but this particular flight did nothing to really impress and grab a new loyal passenger.

Hi Mark,

again a detailed report with lots of great pics. VS-reports don't show up very often here, so this was interesting.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
The plan was to leave the UK Thursday evening and be back in London Saturday afternoon after some 26 odd hours in the air.

Sounds like a tight schedule. Flying that much in such a short time sounds exhausting, even for an aviation enthusiast. But then again, it's Business Class - imagine the same trip in Economy!  melting

I'm looking forward to the next parts of your report.

- It was tight, especially if I encountered issues. I booked the flights to have a minimum of 4 hours layover to allow for imigration, delays etc. The EK flight should have been a Y segment which would have made it less fun, however I managed to change that Smile

In the end everything went on-time except flight number 4 - more of that in my last TR of the 3.

A great trip report of VS Upper Class and Dubai! I think the photographs are great, while the Upper Class lounge looks quite snazzy.  Smile

I actually read it on Sunday, whilst writing my own trip report Big grin But I didn't have time to leave a reply here. I also read the Emirates A380 trip report at the same time, so I'll leave a comment on that soon!

Thanks for the report, I look forward to reading the rest!

Hi, Mark,

reading your story from part to part at the hotel lobby in DRS during the long weekend.
To much other people around, so time now at home for the reply.

A real interesting one, no question, together with perfect pics around your
"How to catch the A380" experience.
But nothing else than high quality expected according to our earlier discussion.
So, looking forward to the A380 and also and especially to the
return on LX  Wink .

Nice TR Mark, as usual.

The pics are really nice.

Seems you had a pleasant flight with VS after all.

The transfer busses in DXB looks horrible. Really hate that they need to have adds that makes if impossible for good pics.

VS have a priority security screening area for premium passengers, you take the lift to the right of the check-in desks, scan the bar code on your boarding pass and it let’s you into the priority screening point, fantastic!

That is very cool!
