In October 1996, local carrier Comair became a franchise partner of British Airways for domestic and regional routes, taking on its colours and livery.

May I also add that the cabin crew wears the BA uniform. They really look smart. I flew BA Comair twice and the F/A's and onboard service were top notch.

Does BA COMAIR have a code sharing agreement with BA?

Question: The LCC in South Africa named "1-Time" ... can anyone explain what that name is supposed to mean? To me, it really doesn't have a good connotation. It sort of sounds like they're saying you'd only want to fly then one time. Anyone?

In South Africa, the phrase "one time!" is a colloquialism meaning "for real!" The marketing slogan of 1Time is: "more nice, less price".

Nice photo trip report!

After reading so many TRs, I can't help but smile at how much is similar no matter what country or airline you fly. Sure, the languages change, and the plane wears different colors, but the at the basic level, they're all familiar territory!

Are the first few pictures taken from an observation deck? They remind me a lot of AMS's excellent rooftop viewing area.

Yes, they are! JNB has two observation decks, one at the domestic and the other at the international terminal. The first few pics were taken from the domestic observation deck.

I hadn't noticed observation decks... how do you get to them?

Couple more questions...

Not so many pics of DUR aircraft? Mostly 737s now...
How's the building work at JNB coming on, between the terminals? Any idea when it will be finished? Or the Gautrain service starting?
Any more news on the new DUR at La Mercy?
I recall from a previous CPT-JNB TR by Henkybaby that SA use an A340 on one of its CPT-JNB flights each day - is this the same both ways? We're planning another trip to DUR in Feb/March and wouldn't mind visiting CPT as well then...

thanks mate  Smile

I wish I could get pics of the aircraft at DUR. I went up to the observation deck and there were quite a few a/c parked (737's, A319's and 1Time's MD83), but I was still pitch dark outside (except for the airport lighting of course!).

Construction of the new Central Terminal Building is still in progress, I couldn't see much though as the front is cordoned off with construction barriers. Work on the new multi-storey parkade is also still in progress. According to the ACSA (Airports Company of South Africa) website, work has to be finished by 2010, for the Soccer World Cup. The Gautrain service will start in 2010, and will initially link Sandton with JNB. It will eventually also link Pretoria with JNB.

Sorry, I missed some of your questions!   To get to the domestic terminal's viewing deck, walk right past all the domestic check-in counters all the way to the back, you'll find a staircase leading up to the deck.

The international terminal's viewing deck is situated on the 4th floor of the northern wing. Just follow the signs from the international arrivals and departures escalators.

Not much more news on the new King Shaka airport. The first phase is expected to be completed by 2010.

There is still one daily A343/A346 return flight between JNB and CPT. It will be a good idea to book in advance!
