AF/KLM - AMS-LYS-CDG-AMS In Y (too Many Pics)

Wed Aug 13, 2008 2:00 pm

Route:
AMS-LYS-CDG-AMS

Aircraft:
AF F100 ; AF Embraer 145; KLM B737-900

Lounges:
KLM Crown Lounge; AF Lounge LYS; AF Lounge CDG 2F

This weekend I decided to go visit some good friends of mine who have a house in the south of France, about 175km south of Lyon. Nothing much exiting happened on the trip, so it will be a picture report mostly. You will have to endure the wide shots, since I bought a Nikon 10.5 mm Fish-eye and a Tokina 11-16mm zoom for my Nikon D80. I have been experimenting a bit and that shows.  Smile It is too long, I know.

Flight #1:
AMS -- LYS
Friday 8/8/08 (lovely date)
AF Fokker 100
Seat 12F

I was originally booked on a later flight via CDG. Even though I was on a non-changeable ticket I knew that if I went straight to the KLM sales desk at Schiphol I might get lucky. KLM staff are absolutely the best in the world. Upon my friendly request to please, please, please, pretty please be allowed to take the direct flight I was handed a new boarding pass. That's what I love about KLM: rules are not something to hide behind. I was happy. This meant I would arrive in LYS around 16:30 in stead of 22:10.

I had only 30 minutes to relax in the lounge. Not bad, since it was very crowded. Some pics:
Entrance

It was busy

Smokers Area (I don't smoke, but at least it was quiet)

TV area

Here are some picture I took on my way from the lounge to the plane:

Coffee corner

Café down the escalator from the lounge

Schengen area

Bubbles Champagne bar

The flight was on a F100. Strange for a Dutch guy, but I never flew one before. Although nothing beats the exit row on a KLM 737 I thought the cabin and seats weren't half bad. Luckily the plane was only about 45% full, so I had it an entire row to myself.

The view from my location

Not as roomy as it looks with a wide angle. Exit row did not actually have any extra legroom.

The view behind

The view in front

To the left

And to the right

In the seat pocket

Soon after boarding we went on out merry way. It was raining in AMS so I was not unhappy leaving for the sunny south.

Rotate

Climbing

Bank

I like these shots with a Fish-eye

Ok enough of that. We did not get any catering other than a pair of cookies. Really lousy. I don't like eating in airplanes as much as some of you do, but this is ridiculous. Ah well, time to take some shots of the cabin.

The Anet legroom shot done in a different way

Cabin from the back (low)

Cabin from the back (high)

The toilet is really small

Especially if you're 1.96 tall

Crew rest

Ok, not much else to say about this flight. We arrived in LYS a couple of minutes early and we disembarked straight to the tarmac 10ft from the terminal entrance. After a very long walk we arrived at the exit of the terminal and I headed for the AVIS rental centre.

END OF PART 1

Part Two

France itself.

My destination: the pool

The house

My bed

My view

Local village

My loyal friend

And after 3 days of that it was time to head back.

Flight #2:
LYS-AMS
Monday 11/8/08
AF EMB145
Seat 5D

At LYS I also tried to convince the AF staff to let me take the direct flight to AMS. Of course with AF rules are there to hide behind, so fat chance. Never mind. The AF website indicated no existence of a lounge at LYS, but to my surprise the actually have one. It is small, poorly stocked and with very uncomfortable seats. But it was there.

Here to be precise

Not a lounge you see too many pictures of, so here we go:

The very uncomfortable and very tiny seats

Ok, enough of that. I walked to my gate. Some images of LYS to entertain you until I am there.

A nice collection of regional planes. The middle one is ‘mine’.

Boarding started and me and the very few other passengers climbed on board

The carry on of course did not fit in the overhead, but luckily there was room up front.

The picture you have all been waiting for: the catering!

After that scrumptious meal I decided to take it easy for a while and enjoy the aftertaste. It really was something else. While contemplating I noticed I actually quite like the Embraer 145 a lot. It is quiet, not that bad looking and the seats aren’t half bad either. That depends on the airline of course. Before I knew it we were on the ground at CDG. Time for

PART THREE

Flight #3
CDG-AMS
Monday 11/8
KLM B737-900
Seat 14A

How come these trip reports always become so incredibly long? Maybe I should stop asking rhetorical questions in them… I had two hours to kill at CDG which mostly leads to me wanting to kill myself. When we arrived we taxied to a remote stand and were told we would be bussed to the terminal.

Arrival area

A Fokker 70 at our arrival plot

Riding the bus for what seemed like 15 minutes gave me the chance to take some pictures

A TAM plane covered in autographs. Who has the story?

Detail

Yes, there actually is a plane taking off in the background

After a while we arrived at the terminal. Terminal 2F is always crowded. Before I ran to the lounge to hide I took these pictures.

Entry to the lounge (and safety!)

The lounge was surprisingly empty considering the mayhem above. Gave me the opportunity to take some nice pictures.

Food selection was bad as always.

Seating area

Another seating area

My secret quiet corner for when it’s busy

A room with a view

After about 1.5 hrs it was time to board the plane. Reading this TR by now has taken probably longer than the trip itself, so I will stick to pics

Airbridge

Entering the KL737

View from my seat

It was getting dark and we had a beautiful sunset flying not to high about a layer of clouds

Sunset

KLM 737 wing

KLM Cabin view in the dark

We landed, deplaned and ran to the exit. In the car, go home, sleep. I hope you enjoyed the report. Too many pictures, I know.

Feedback, tips and tricks always appreciated!

Interesting to see that your flights were not very full. Maybe it's because Lyon is more of a business route and it's the summer holidays.

When I was a kid I flew a few times Lyon to Paris and Lyon to London. In those days it was from Lyon Bron Airport I think they called it. Air Inter operated the flights using DC-7Cs (leased from UTA I think) and then the Vickers Viscount to Paris. We got a hot meal in those days. AF operated a Vickers Viscount to London and Milan.

In the winter the airport was often closed due to fog. So once I took the train to London instead as it was more reliable than flying.

The Lyon Airport looks beautiful. I wonder if it's part of the old one or completely new.

How did you find the house? It looks very relaxing. Is it expensive? Enjoyed reading your report as it brought old memories.

The house is actually owned by friends of mine. It is exquisite. It rents for E 1100,- a week I believe. Not that expensive considering the size (sleeps 8), location (secluded but with a view) and private pool. The site is in Dutch but you can look it up here http://www.la-garenne.nl/

Too many pictures, I know.

IMHO there are never too many pictures in a TR.

Nice report, three aircraft I have never flown on. I have flown on 733's and soon on the 738, but never the 739.

IIRC this is the first TAM aircraft in the new TAM colours. As a tribute, all employees could sign the aircraft. I believe that the signatures are painted on.

Now what a nice idea! Thank you for clarifying that.

- Nice, shows good customer service and shows rules are made to be broken!

- Amazing!!

AF lounges are really rubbish, I just don't know how they get away with it.
