Arrival at JFK
by 415am, for a 600am departure. A quick walk inside and all of the check-in kiosks said to check back at 430am. I looked around and was able to find a check-in kiosk that would allow me to check-in. I was more than well aware that the down line leg from ATL
was a full flight with only aisle seats left to select from. In the end I ended up selecting seat 44G for the JFK
sector and 44D for the ATL
sector. After checking in at the kiosk I headed back outside to find a skycap. He was a somewhat friendly person who remarked about we don’t live on the salary we make here, we live off of the tips. I handed him a five, he smiled, and I remarked back “I hope that helps”.
Observations of JFK
As has been very well noted on this website and by the complaints of thousands Delta Air Lines JFK
facilities are in sad shape. I am not going to try and color coat it in anyway shape and or form. They are terrible and should be addressed in a timely manner. As much as I like flying Delta, I cannot for the life of me come to excuse the conditions of their JFK
operations. The terminal as we all know was once the gateway of one of the greatest airlines in the World, Pan Am. Not much is left of the Pan Am image. One can’t help but to wonder in a somewhat morbid way what the passengers on the flight to Tenerife saw in that terminal back in 1977. Or what the families of the Pan Am 103 tragedy saw of that very same terminal back in 1988. I am sorry for the trip down morbid lane, I just call it as I see it. At the same time you have to wonder how many people departed to and from that terminal over the years. How many times was that terminal the gateway to the World for so very many people. You cant help but imagine the crisp and polished Pan Am crews as they paraded through the terminal preparing to board their 747 for destinations such as Sao Paulo, Rome, and Heathrow. It is a living piece of history, if nothing less.
Please excuse me in advance as my camera does not fair well with the glare of terminal lighting and dark exteriors. Hence, the reason that I opted not to take images from the cramped and sardine like Gate 8. However, on the flip side I can tell you it is a sight to be seen. I counted no less than 1 Virgin America at its gate, another one taxing in from the West Coast, and 3 others parked at hard stands. At the same time I saw 1 Avianca 757-200 at it’s respective gates, while a 767-300 taxied very slowly to its gate. I am assuming for the morning departure to Bogota. Nothing was happening in the Delta terminal with the exception of a very early morning arrival at about 530am of a flight from Dakar.

Below I have taken some images of the advertisements on the Delta Air Lines AVOD network which were played during both boarding to inform passengers of markets served, Sky Team, and advertising partners.
Pushback was quick and rapid, as we pushed back we were blessed with one of the most amazing sights I have ever seen, in all of my travels. It was a picture perfect American Airlines A300-600 taking off into the pre-dawn sky with the moon glowing at one end and the sunrise on the other end. Sometimes, as they say, something’s are best left to the imagination. The taxi to the runway was rather quick for an aircraft of that size, we came to a halt and were blessed with yet an even more majestic view. As we sat and waited parallel to the runway the early arrival of the Delta 77L from Mumbai was viewed. It was as picture perfect as they come. We waited for an additional aircraft a Jet Blue A320 to proceed with its takeoff roll, before we were off. The takeoff was uneventful, albeit very powerful.
The remainder of the flight was both uneventful and frankly I think I was to tired to remember half of it. I fell asleep somewhere over Virginia and woke up somewhere just inside of the Georgia state border. Decent was nothing special, we made a few turns and were lined up with ATL
. The landing was smooth and afforded some excellent photo opportunities as you can see below. All in all it was a great flight. The crew was pleasant and professional, the service was suffice, and the aircraft cabin was spotless. Great job Delta Air Lines, and the entire in-flight crew.
