SLC-IAD-SLC On Delta 737-800 Winglets (+pics/vids)

I visited Washington, D.C. and Virginia a week ago for a meeting and was able to get some pictures from the flights and would like to share them with you.
This was the first time I had flown as a revenue passenger in quite a while and have never really felt the urge to record my non-revenue flights. So this is the first real trip report I have done.
My outbound trip started by leaving home just before 8:00 am. I arrived at the airport twenty minutes later and made my way to the terminal. I checked in online beforehand and went to the counter to drop my checked bag off. Delta still allows customers to check one bag for free (unlike most of their competitors). I dropped my bag off and made my way to security which was hassle-free.
The airport was rather busy as it was a Friday morning during a large bank for Delta at SLC. The lines were however, very reasonable. I made it to the gate with about 25 minutes to spare before boarding began.
The flight was scheduled to be operated with a 737-800 with winglets and personal IFE. However, an aircraft swap resulted in a non-winglet version with no personal IFE. Oh well.

The flight itself was rather uneventful. We began encountering turbulence about 20 minutes after departure and it didn’t let up until wheels down. The turbulence was significant enough for the flight attendants to be seated for almost half the flight.
Unlike other competing airlines, Delta does not charge for water, soft drinks, or juice in economy class. It also has complementary snacks. You can also purchase food on board. For longer flights, they offer two opportunities for snack and beverage in coach. The onboard movie on this flight was also free.
Due to the bumpy flight and since the captain had asked the flight attendants to remain seated for a good portion of it, the flight attendants were unable to complete a second snack and beverage service. No biggie.
The flight was pushed along by a good tail wind which got us to IAD in a timely matter and almost twenty minutes early. It was lightly raining when we landed and taxi to the gate was quick and uneventful.

Before catching my return flight, I made a stop at the Steven Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport. This was my second time to this museum and unlike last time, the crowds were very minimal this day. For those of you who haven’t had a chance to visit this museum, I highly recommend it.

I arrived at the airport 1.5 hours before departure. The airport wasn’t very busy today. Check-in and the security lines were light. I had some time to kill before boarding, so I grabbed a bite. Concourse B at Dulles is rather nice and offers a lot of good places to eat and quiet places to wait for your flight. It also gives spotters better views of airport activity.
Our aircraft arrived from SLC about 40 minutes before our departure time. Today we would have our scheduled 737-800 with winglets. This was my first time on a DL 737 with winglets. Boarding began about 20-25 minutes prior to departure. The flight was rather full but boarding was completed in a timely matter and we pushed back only two minutes late. We were airborne about 20 minutes later and headed west for SLC.

The personal IFE features free live TV for passengers as well as several on-demand movies. From what I remember, the options included Indiana Jones, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Iron Man, and some others. I watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall and thought it was hilarious. The on-demand movies are $6. Passengers can also watch a variety of HBO shows for $2. If you are still bored after all that, you can play a few games including the popular trivia game where you compete against other passengers. You can also build a playlist from a large selection of songs.
The flight was smooth for the most part and flight attendants were able to complete both beverage and snack services this time. Approach and landing in SLC was a little bumpy, which isn’t unusual. Landing was to the south and we arrived at gate C6 a few minutes later.

Overall, I had a great experience on both flights. The crews were wonderful and the flights were operated on schedule. I love the personal IFE and is a great benefit for longer flights. I think Delta is one of the better prepared airlines for the future in these troubling times in the industry and I think they will continue to offer a great product when compared with other airlines.

Hope you enjoyed the report. Maybe I'll do another one sometime.

Wow, great photos of SLC and the area surrounding it! Salt Lake City has by far one of my favorite airports, departures and arrivals always come with outstanding views of the landscape. Again, nice photos and videos! Well done.
The proper term is "on final" not "on finals" bud...
