London To Cancun / Cozumel To London; AA And CO

Tue Dec 30, 2008 5:19 pm

I wanted to fly from London to Cozumel via New York. I decided to fly to Cancun instead as CO's connecting time in Houston was only 1 hour and I did not want to risk spending 24 hours in a Houston hotel room if I missed the connection. One can travel from Cancun to Cozumel by MayaAir in a small Cessna in 15 minutes or take a taxi to Playa del Carmen (1 hour) and a fast ferry boat in 40 minutes. We chose the ferry boat which was very pleasant. Here is the web site of MayaAir though. The return was from Cozumel.

http://www.mayair.com.mx/

The flight from London to New York was on American Y class on a 777 and was nearly full. Left at 8 pm and arrived at 11 pm.Flight lasts 7 hours. It was dark so I only took a picture of the meals. Check in was a breeze. I found the meal excellent. A decent interesting salad unlike the boring lettuce they serve on flights from New York. A decent carrot cake unlike the cookies they serve from New York.

The snack was a very good pizza. I am bringing this picture from Photobucket. You have to click.

The seats were comfortable. The crew were nice but the entertainment was boooring. A 2 year old film, a boooring interview and a short travel documentary. Music was OK.

As one boards they don't say hello. When I looked at a stewardess to say hello she looked on the floor so I got the message. Having arrived on a British Airways flight 2 days before with friendly "hellos" it felt strange. But I am used to that.

The flight to Cancun was Continental 737 and was nearly full. Left from Newark at 7.45 AM and the flight takes 4 hours and 15 minutes. As one arrives close to Newark we were welcomed by the terrible smell of chemical gasses from chemical plants.

Check in lasted about 30 minutes. Security line lasted another 30 minutes. I sat opposite the toilet which was entertainihg for people watching. For the whole flight there must have been on average 5 people waiting in the back.

Seats were comfortable, crews nice. Breakfast was a tiny but very good muffin, Corn flakes and some raisins which I hate. I would have preferred a bigger muffin and no raisins nor cornflakes. Here is the picture.

As were landing at Cancun we could see Isla Mujeres and then the hotels. I have been to Cancun many years ago but not liked it. One bay has rough water / currents (the best is near the Club Med on the closest tip on the picture) and the other bay has very shallow water. I was told that there had been drownings on the rough part of the beach.

Cozumel is famous for having the clearest water in the Caribbean. It was made famous by Jacques Cousteau in 1961. The population is 70,000 and the people are mostly Mayan. Very friendly. Island is popular with divers and snorkelers.

The airport is modern and very pleasant. Think it is managed by Swissport. Here is the picture boarding the CO 737 to Houston. Flight was full. Crew nice and funny. They told everyone to turn off their cell phones, blackberries, blueberries and strawberries.

Take off was very nice. We could see the capital of San Miguel which has a nice square and cafes.

The flight takes 2 hours. We were served a so so chicken sandwich, a so so biscuit and nice grapes. Seats were comfortable. When I arrived at 11.30 PM Newark was very quiet. I noticed boarding for a CO flight to Bonaire. I would have loved to stowaway on that flight. Bonaire and Curacao are places I would like to go to.

As we approached Houston we saw the Texas coast. It was interesting as it was very flat and low. Reminded me of Holland. This explains all the floods they have.

From Houston to New York the flight was only about 30% full. They served a delicious Mexican chicken wrap and a Twix bar which I loooove. Flight lasted 3 hours. Seats were comfortable, crew nice.

Took the 9.30 AM AA 777 from New York to London. Arrives at 8.30 PM. I prefer this than the evening flight though one loses the whole day. The AA terminal at JFK is very nice. It was pleasant and quiet early morning. . The taxi driver made a short cut through a petrol station. He got caught and we got stopped. The poor guy got a $250 ticket. Gave him an extra tip to try and help him pay it off. Lost at least 10 minutes with the police.

Here are 2 pictures of the AA 777. This is a code share with El Al and Gulf Air. Amusing to see AA, LY and GF blincking on the departure board.

Next picture has to be clicked.

Flight was full and lasted 6 hours. I had 2 seats though and was like a King. They even gave out remaining USA Today. Nice crew overall. Seats comfy but tray tables were dirty. No big deal but surprised. They probably don't clean them after every flight.

However one hostess was very hostile towards a group of young Israeli religious students who were well behaved. I later overheard her as I was waiting to go to the loo, making fun at them ....."that they don't stop praying." Then she added ......"we have a few in Ireland."

The breakfast was wonderful. Omelet, fruit, croissant. They even gave a snack box. Toblerone, cheddar spread and crackers. A bit dry. Also those awful raisins. It was a bit too much. I have no idea why we got the snack box. What I liked is that one could go to the back and get orange or apple juice any time we wanted.

Snack was good. A small turkey sandwich and biscuit and yes the "famous raisins." 10 years ago the snack was more fancy. But it was OK. Picture must be clicked.

Here are a few pictures of Cozumel. Beautiful clear water. A nice island to visit.

Nice report! Too bad about the seemingly bigoted hostess -- unfortunately, anti-Semitism is still alive and well. Glad you had a good trip.

Nice and interesting report!

The food on AA looked nice, and i must say that i think that they are now one of the "better" US airlines. It's good that AA have a "real" starter and dessert, instead of two tiny bits of letteuce and one slice of cucumber, and a bag of trail mix for dessert, like they do on Continental Airlines.

It's also good that they offer a proper snack before arrival. Many other airlines (even EK) only give out a tiny sandwich, though IIRC AF serve a full cold meal tray before arrival, or have they dropped that?

The one thing i didn't like was the plastic tin foiles, can't just use reusable plates, cups (or what ever they're called)

The meal on your second flight didn't looke very proper. Aren't there supposed to be a full hot meal on flights from the US to Latin America? I know that Delta serve a full hot meal on those flights.

Besides, why can't CO just use trays, they look so much better than that black box. The meal served on the domestic leg looked quite nice. It's good that CO is the only US airline that still serve complimentary food on domestic legs.

When it comes to the food on CO, i think that they are a bit euphemistic. What they serve seem more like a small snack than a "proper meal"

The food on your return flight to London looked very nice. Both the quality and quantity of food looked great.

Such a pity when it comes to the F/A. IMHO one of the worst things a f/a can do is to just ignore a passenger, very unprofessional  thumbsdown

Thanks for sharing

A very interesting report on a quite uncommon routing. However, there isn't a huge amount of detail, particularly about the aircraft or the airport

thank you for an interesting report nonetheless

Nope, the airport is concessioned to Asur (ASR is the ticker code on NYSE). I do not believe Swissport is involved in the equity or management of Asur.

Enjoyed the report. Good summary of the service. I find it amusing how similar the upholstery of the AA777 and CO737 is. AA's is just a bit darker.

I'm glad you had good flights and service. I'm also a fan of Cozumel. I used to go diving there all the time but have stopped in the past few years for some reason.

Great pictures and a great report! I've never been in a cab that got pulled over by the police before! Wow.

Thanks

Thank you for your comments:

TWA757: At first I thought I was being paranoid. But yes, my suspicions were confirmed an hour later.

LH4116: LOL you are like me. I get very annoyed at getting "lettuce with cookies as a desert." This is exactly what CO do on flights to / from Europe. And their hot lunches are not even good. Unfortunately AA do the same thing on the evening flights to Europe. And Swiss serve lettuce with not even a tomato or a measly cucumber.

The breakfast on CO was the same as a domestic flight. But because I split a large croissant before boarding I was OK. Cozumel is part of Mexico, not South America.

AA on their Caribbean flights are more generous. To Providenciales a year ago on a 3 1/2 hour flight we got a hot omelet and fruit going and a hot lunch coming back.

AF to JFK still serve a small sandwich as a snack.

Staralliance 38: I loved the pizza and the Scottish shortbread.

Atlanta: I use a Canon SD550 Digital Powershot. It is easy to use. It's now 3 years old so they must have other models now.

Lovetojetblue: In regards to the airports. In London AA leave from Terminal 3. It's not very nice. The new British Airways Terminal 5 is beautiful. I also like the new American Airlines Terminal at JFK. Much better than Newark. It took 1 hour at Newark to check in and pass throgh security. A lot of crowds early morning.

However the AA Terminal early AM is a pleasure. It only took about 15 minutes to check in and pass security.

Eddiedude: There were some carts that said Swissport. I did some research. They handle the US Air flights. Here is the link below:

http://www.swissport.com/network/company.php?id=452

DFW13L: I don't like going back to the same place. I don't blame you going to new places. But I am happy I went as I always wanted to go. It's also not too expensive.

Yes it's funny that the CO and AA seats are nearly the same. I did not notice. You have a good eye for details.

My, that was extremely tolerant and accomodating of her.. NOT!

Sorry about that, I hope you dont think that she is representative of Irish people's attitudes. She certaintly doesnt represent mine!

Anyway, good trip report, some nice photos too... must get to Mexico sometime!

Super80DFW: I stopped over in New York for a few days both ways so I did not have to go from EWR straight to JFK. I found out I could have flown Houston to La Guardia. I did not know CO went to La Guardia also. When I asked in Houston to go standby they told me I would have to pay $50. That is a new rule now. The taxi from EWR to New York is expensive.

Very nice TR

The pictures are good.

I find it amazing that there are departures at 8pm to the US from LHR. The west bound transatlantic bank is during morning to early afternoon. The same for your return out of NYC, it is so early in the morning, and you arrive so late in Europe then. East bound flights departs usually throughout afternoon and evening and arrive early following day.
Dose those flights that you took from/to LHR affect you less ( jet lag).

Seems that AA are plain good over the pond, nothing out of the ordinary,

B747forever: Westbound: It is great for me that AA have a flight at 8 pm. You arrive at JFK at 11 pm. It is quiet and you pass customs very quickly. There was only one other flight from Santo Domingo. Got to the hotel at about 12.30. Slept OK.
Eastbound: Leaving in the morning JFK at 9.30 AM and arriving in London at 8 PM is for me the best. In the summer AA also have a flight at 8.30AM. Heathrow at that time of night is very quiet. I found my friends waiting for me very easily as there were few people around. I went to bed at midnight and slept 7 hours and felt fine. However the 3rd night I slept 10 and felt great.
Leaving at night and arriving in the morning I hate. In order to feel OK I sleep about 3 hours when I arrive.
The morning flights to London are not so popular as one wastes one full day and there are no connections to other European cities. Only to the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Catering on the AA flights seems to have improved, hopefully a sign they have decided to lift their game a bit.

An interesting trip report.

LHR777 the reason it is a hot breakfast is that it is the morning flight to London. In the evening flights they just give a croissant like CO.
On the CO flights from Europe that leave at 9AM they serve "lunch" at 10AM. It's absurd. And it's a lousy lunch in my opinion.

Depends on what sector you are flying to/from the Caribbean. On some routes the meal service is good while others its virtually non-existent. I do agree though that they seem to be improving.
