One Short Day In HNL/ UA F

Fri Jan 16, 2009 10:43 pm

Background: Living in Denver and it being cold lately and wanting to go somewhere a few days before college starts again, the flights were wide open to HNL so I headed out there for a day

I tried to get on DEN-HNL but the seat was going to be a center seat in the last row of a full 763 and knowing that the flights were more open out of LAX I headed to LAX

When I got to the gate the agent had my boarding pass printed out and I had about a half hour until boarding so I pulled out my computer to send a few emails, Boarding was soon called and I headed to the Red Carpet lane and headed on board into 3A, I was offered juice or water and took the juice. The captian would not put on Ch9 so I was kind of angry at that
Soon the jetway was pulled and we were on a quick taxi to the runway

As soon as we were at a safe altitude the F/A quickly offered a drink and asked what we would like to eat the choices were a Shrimp Salad with Ginger Dressing or a Melted Turkey Sandwich. I took the Salad and a coke

The meal included a fresh chocolate chip cookie and a multi-grain roll.
The salad was very good and the fresh baked cookie is always very good

LAX is a nice terminal but it can get crowded when you have a few late day departures
After a few hours it was time for the flight to HNL my name was called when boarding was started and she did not have any window seats so I took 2E I boarded through the red carpet again

When I boarded the Purser greeted me at the door and directed me to my seat, and I was quickly offered juice or water and I took juice again, this Ch9 was on, we soon taxied to the runway and took off, I saw my first A380 sitting on the QF holding pad with 3 744s and the A380 is not as big as I was expecting it to be.
After we took off the purser introduced himself and addressed me by name the entire flight, a rare instance on U.S. carriers now, again I took a coke and I was given warm nuts
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm37/N104UA/040.jpg

After the first drink service they took meal orders and I took the chicken, the meal was served on a tray but to my surprise they did it in two courses

The Chicken was very good and after the meal the F/As passes out immigration forms and the Half Way to Hawaii game, I then watched a movie on my iPod, the F/As were very good at keeping the drinks full and were very friendly
As we started the decent I tried to put on Ch9 but the captain had turned it off sometime in flight. We landed and had a quick taxi into gate 8.
I soon got to the hotel and after a short night of sleep got up for a short day before to get to the airport for my departure that night
I went to Waikiki beach late in the day and got a few pics of planes landing

After a short day I got to the airport for my red eye flight to SFO
when I got to the airport after a quick check in I went through security and then to the gate.
I walked around HNL and got a few pictures

Upstairs in HNL has nothing in it except the red carpet club

I went back to the gate and my and the agent said that there were over 60 standby's but there were only about 150 people booked for 310 seats in Y so I was not worried name was soon called and the agent had 1A printed out for me

When I boarded I took my seat and was again offered juice, and I asked the purser if she could ask the captian if he would turn on Ch9 and she said "They are discontinuing it, because of security concerns" I knew she just did not want to ask him.
We soon taxied out to the runway and had a short take off roll, and I love how quite the P&W engines are.

After takeoff I was given warm nuts and asked what I would like to drink, I took a sprite, when he brought the drink he asked what I would like to eat the choices were cold fried chicken or a fruit and cheese plate, I took the cheese and fruit plate.

I was surprised on how little was given to F on this flight
After I ate I put on my ipod and went to sleep until we were about 20 minutes out of SFO

Landing SFO
Landing was smooth and we quickly taxied to the gate

After deplaning I went to the DEN gate and was watching the new board UA has and it showed me as number 8 on the list with 15 seats left so I was happy but the upgrade list had 18 names on it with 8 seats left so I knew I was not going to get F
When the agent called my name but all she had left were center seats but I got an exit row

I did not get any pictures because I was in a center seat, Ch9 was not on AGAIN  Angry put I just put on my iPod and then fell asleep for about an hour and then got a cup of coffee from the F/As landing was good besides having to wait because of fog in DEN when we landed clouds were on the ground and then we taxied to the gate B35.

Great report - thanks!

The roadway/driveway upstairs at HNL is for the wiki wiki shuttle. It usually brings international pax from their arrival gate to the HNL customs and immigration facility (based on my experiences in flying into HNL anyway).

Brad, you are one lucky guy to get on one of the 59xx 757's, the winglet ETOPS birds. I *think* there are only two of them, 5946 and 5949.

Looks like the trip was really fun. Where you off to next?? SFO-FRA on the new 744's??

Its not really an immigration form, its more of a declaration form. Because Hawai'i is an island, they need to be sure that nothing that is harmful is coming into the state.

Since I am not familiar with UA's First service, I am only guessing here. But I would have to say the lack of food is because it is an overnight flight.

There are really only two of them? I guess I flew on one of them from LAX-DEN back in november as it was an over water 757 with winglets.

That is what I thought but it was a very small amount of food even for an overnight flight

Or cutbacks. I've had the fruit and cheese plate before on UA's redeyes out of LIH and there was more "food" on the plate than the one pictured by N104UA...different crackers, chocolate chip cookie and some tasty dipping sauce in a small ramekin. Of course, it's been a year since I last flew them in F. The difference too could have been with the caterer. I believe that UA contracts the Kauai Marriott for their catering in LIH as there is no Gate Gourmet like in HNL. Not sure if they still contract catering or if they are bringing in extra catering on the inbound flight to service the outbound flights like as I believe AA, DL and US do out of LIH.

That's correct. There are two levels at the "overseas" terminal*. The lower level is the one that most people see since it is at boarding gate level. The second level is used primarily for international arrivals pre-customs/immigration. Although I have seen domestic arrivals use the second level if the lower level is too busy. At night when there aren't too many flights, the second floor is an absolute ghost town....

* ironic due to the fact that all flights technically fly over the water and can be considered "overseas" since we're an island state. Overseas in this context has always meant out-of-state flights as opposed to the Inter Island terminal.

Hope your short stay was a good one!

Thanks is that why the gate areas in HNL can be closed off so the can send the NRT arrivals upstairs using the same gates

Exactly for instance, before Hawaii didn't have any snakes until someone brought them onto the island, they don't want any foreign fruits and stuff outside of the ones they permit.

Excellent trip report. One thing I noticed though, did you really arrive at gate 75B? The plane next to you is at 75A and I thought 75A and B were dual gates? Just curious

No. I am not joking. It's not the unlimited travel use that's important here, it's the fact that a gate agent took the time to find a seat and print a BP... and then for a NRSA passenger to say, "no thanks, that's not a good enough seat for me" (all the while remembering that the folks in 42D and F most certainly did not pay $0.00)... seems a wee bit inconsiderate. And it annoys the gate agents to no end.

ALPAs not involved in this at all, certain pilots have elected on their own to turn channel 9 off whether its in protest off being laid off or for what they perceive as liability issues. Channel 9 is still available on the vast majority of flights.

Sure it is. Beings as how it is "unlimited", fly however you like. If you'd like to fly from SFO to LAX via JFK, that is completely within their province as a nonrev traveler.

Quoting UniTED (Reply 20):

Something the computer will do for us, it'll just assign a seat (seemingly at random) - any open seat - and onload the nonrev. It takes a sumtotal of 1.2 seconds.... perhaps 1.8 if you are slow.

Quoting UniTED (Reply 20):
And it annoys the gate agents to no end.

Yea?? Remind us how you know?!

We get it all the time and we don't care at all. If they don't want to fly on the plane, it's no skin off our back, it's totally and completely up to them.

The gate agent was not angry and almost every non-rev that I have met has turned down a boarding pass especially on a longer flight, if it was DEN-OMA or DEN-MSP they might be a little mad but I could have taken the boarding pass and not boarded and then another non-rev would not have been able to take my seat, so it is better that I give it back

Cool strange trip. I'm thinking of doing something similar this Winter as not as many people are flying. Maybe LAX-SCL on an AA mileage run!

Speaking of these terminals at HNL, what's the deal with what I called the "ghost terminal" on the opposite end of the airport? I believe it's where US Airways flights depart. We walked over there before our NW redeye, and found a nearly completely darkened, empty terminal. It was almost creepy. And, the decor hasn't been changed one whit since the '70's, when this terminal must have been built. It was like being in a time warp.
Finally made it to an airline mecca!

Quoting UniTED (Reply 20):

I work gates every other day during my week, and I have to tell you people do it all the time. I just cancel their seat out and either onload the next non-rev or continue with whatever I do. Just the other day I turned down a seat. Its actually better for the gate agent to tell them you don't want the seat than not get on the aircraft and have them page and page for you.

And with 21k miles already this year, yeah, I'd have to say its the unlimited travel use that really is what its all about. Big grin
