UA Economy Plus To Brussels (IAD-BRU-IAD) Pics

NOW FOR THE TRIP REPORT!

OKC-IAD-BRU-IAD-ORD (Overnight) ORD-OKC

After all of the problems with United refunding my miles because of my mom's surgery last week, I was left with little choice as to where I could fly to Europe with their 40,000 Mile award special. I was originally going to AMS, but the flights (award seats) had sold out, therefore I picked Brussels because it was a 777. Yes I prefer the big jets, and LHR was out, and I didn't know they flew a 777 to Rome now.

I took out my digital camera and found that I had left my SIM card in my computer, which was in my checked luggage, therefore, I was out of luck for pictures for this first flight, and possibly the second if I didn't find another SIM card. Anyway, I booked my ticket the morning of the flight and flew from OKC to IAD on the noon flight. Needless to say, I was in a rush to get packed as I got confirmed around 7AM that morning after being up all night trying to sort out the mess I had made, or United had made with my mileage plus account.

It was your typical CRJ-700 flight. I was seating in the first row of Economy Plus and even though the plane is small, I always enjoy a good CRJ flight, though this was a little long in the tooth for my taste. Descending into IAD was extremely rough. The kind of dropping and upward movement that really gets your stomach, not the choppy kind, or side to side. I hadn't been to IAD since 1999 and then, there was a lot of construction I believe, but I was shocked. IAD was terrible, or at least the United Terminals. Outside, they look like barns, and inside they are SO cramped you can't walk down the terminal without bumping into another person. The waiting areas are tiny and there are only about 2 restaurants, again, very small in the entire building, one of them being a very expensive, and misplaced wine bar, which I opted for some Vino before my flight to Brussels. I had about 2 hours to spare, but didn't bother getting a new sim card, thought it would be pointless because the flight was at night anyway.

I was lucky to get a newly painted 777. It was N769UA, one of the first 777's built, but looking good in the new paint. I believe it is a 1995 build. The flight took off right on time and we followed several other United 777's and departed directly behind a South African A346 headed to JNB I believe, or perhaps CPT. At this time, there are a lot of European flights headed out from IAD and one to Kuwait, not sure about the United DXB flight though as I didn't see it, but I was at one end of the terminal. Seems as though UA has it's highest concentration of 777's in the US at IAD, and newly painted ones at that, or perhaps I was just lucky. Anyway, the flight departed directly behind the South African Jet and per my request, UA Channel 9 was turned on. I asked a lovely Flemish speaking flight attending if she would ask the captain, and as the captain made his flight announcement, he commented on Channel 9 and our call sign, United 950 Heavy. My gift to the cabin I suppose.

I was seated in 26A, which is at the rear end of the Eco Plus cabin. Economy Plus is great actually, though they could use some new seats and PTV's, though, I suppose the non-ER versions of the 777 don't get priority. The legroom was ample, and I was enjoying the sunset. We flew DIRECTLY over NYC and of course, the NE Corridor, JFK/BOS area was full of chatter on channel 9.

We were served dinner about 1.5 hours after departure and it was Chicken with a Mushroom Sauce, Salad with Balsamic Vinagrette, and bread, with some sort of cake. It was actually quite nice. I've flown quite a lot in business class on United both to Asia and Europe, and this time, the food in Economy was rather on par with Business Class, without the free drinks and presentation of course. (Though I did enjoy a few drinks).

Flew up the coast of main and into far eastern/northern Canada and out over the Atlantic. Channel 9 went quiet for a a while, and the flight got particularly rough as nighttime set in. I decided to strike up a conversation with my seat mate and it turned out he was an employee of NATO on his way home to Brussels, and we talked politics, though he declined to give any passionate views about Bush OR Obama.

I told him about my interest in aviation and my predicament with my digital camera, so he gave me his to use so I snapped these shots just before we hit the coast of Ireland and on into Ireland over Belfast, (and he emailed them to me a day later)and turning north for some reason, and returning southward toward Manchester.

The pilot managed to keep the wing lights (not sure what these were called) on during the flight, which illuminated the vortex generators on the wings:






I didn't want to seem like a burden, so I didn't use his camera very long. So I only snapped these night shots, but as we neared Ireland and Especially Manchester, the chatter over Channel 9 was getting busier. It's funny, because at IAD the restaurants are so small, I shared a table with an English Professor about my age who was going to AMS on another United 777, as UA946 heavy that departed just before us. We were trailing them all along, and even to AMS center, and I could hear her plane as well.

We flew south over Rotterdam, and the sun started to rise barely into a cloudy horizon, but the orange sun was apparent. Rotterdam was actually exciting. I was looking out the window and saw all these buildings lit up from the top as if they had no roofs, and I commented to my seat mate, and he explained to me that they were greenhouses! Wow, it makes sense though. We finally were handed off from AMS and for BRU approach and landed very softly in BRU. It was extremely quiet at the airport at this time of day, therefore, not many aircraft to look at. I headed through customs which was very quick due to the lack of planes at the time, and stupidly, hired a Taxi to take me to my hotel, which was 41 Euro. The train is 3,30 Euro!!!!!

Checked into the Hotel Metropole which is an historic hotel in BRU and a famous landmark. Supposedly one of the oldest 5 star hotels in Brussels. I did the Cardinal Sin of falling asleep as soon as I got to my hotel, and woke up about noon, and went to eat lunch then went back to bed around 8PM. The next few days I went sightseeing and met some really interesting people in the various pubs from all over Europe and the US there for various reasons. Here are my pictures from the trip.

Made friends at a pub with this crew, from South Carolina, Germany, Ireland, Canada, and England. Tried my first taste of Absynth with them, which was rather good with the sugar cube, sort of lost track after that though!  



Of course, I was hungover quite a bit the next day, so I slept in, but had a good dinner and packed up for my return flight to IAD and onto OKC. Though, I started looking at my itinerary, and realized that UA951 continued onto Chicago, and I was BOOKED ON IT! I panicked and called United, and they informed me that I was indeed booked on it with an overnight stay in ORD and would return to OKC on the 8:24AM flight to OKC. So I called up my friend Lacey and planned on staying with her at her apartment.

I couldn't sleep well the night before the flight, so I got up early and headed to the airport, (THIS TIME BY TRAIN!) around 530AM. Check-in time at BRU for UA951 to IAD and ORD was at 8AM, so I had some time to take some pictures of the departure lounge and some of the interesting artwork at BRU.










Finally, it was time for check-in. I thought maybe, being a Premier Member on UA might give me some pull to getting a direct flight back to OKC from IAD the same day, but no luck with that. I headed to the check in counter and got my boarding passes and headed to the gates. BRU was getting really busy at this point in time, and soon you'll see why.




I went through passport control, and then through another security checkpoint into the terminal, which I think was terminal B. It was FULLLLLLL of Jet Airways A330's headed to various Indian destinations, as well as all the US bound flights, with AA, DL, CO all at their respective gates. My UA 777 sat on the tarmac for a later departure.

After the Delta Ship departed for JFK, they towed my 777 to the same gate and prepared it for flight. By this point in time, my battery on my camera was getting somewhat limited, but I managed to take a few shots.




We boarded rather quickly, in fact, I was the first passenger on the plane for economy given my Premier status, I was seated in 22A and had the row by myself, which was nice. The flight was rather empty and it wasn't long until we started to taxi. We taxied onto the active runway, the engines spooled up a bit, but not much and we just sort of lazily drifted down the runway. I knew something was up, and sure enough, we turned off and stopped for about 10 min. No one really noticed anything, but I figured something was wrong. Finally, our captain came on and stated that we had to return to the gate as there was an "Aft Cargo Heat Light Warning" and that we needed to have it checked out. We returned to the B terminal, but this time to the Continental gate, even though our previous gate was still open. This is when I noticed a LH A340-300 sitting at the terminal beside us. Since when did LH start flying those aircraft to BRU? Could it have been a diversion.

Anyway, after about an hour, we had things in order and were first to take off. As my camera was dying, I had one last shot, climbing out of Brussels, and then the poor thing just couldn't do any more pics.



The meal was served about an hour after take-off and we had an unusual routing. On most of the westbound European-US flights, we usually go way north, however, we turned immediately south flight right over Paris, then turned eastward and headed out over the Atlantic somewhere around Brest. The flight was smooth for the most part, and it was completely cloudy over the Atlantic as we made an unusually straight flight path to Boston, then turning south, and west of NYC and on into IAD. The landing this time was rough! We bounced and several of the middle overhead lockers fell open, but no bags fell out as far as I know. We taxied for some time and I noticed LH, QR, Ethiopian, and BA were all present at this point in time.

Quickly got off the plane and headed to immigration and it was quite the mess! Huge amounts of people as the bank of flights from Europe had just flown in. Again, a HUGE amount of 777's at the same airport all at once.

I got through customs, after waiting forever for the bags to be unloaded and TONS of drug/bomb sniffing dogs everywhere! I swear they sniffed everyone at least 3 times! Oh well....

Finally, I headed up to the terminal for the flight to ORD.

It was another 777 with the tag UA 951 Heavy. I was seated in 21A this time. The flight duration was around 1h 39m and Channel 9 was on. The captain advised us before taking off that the weather in Chicago was fine at the moment, but there were some storms coming in and we were going to try and beat them to ORD.

The usual chatter was going on during flight over the US as this is a busy sector. However, as we contacted center (Indy?) we were advised that ORD was shut down indefinitely due to storms. We were requested to do 20 mile turns and for a while the captain said nothing, He then came on and told us what was going on and stated that we had about 30 min of fuel left to make these turns and head to ORD, otherwise we would probably be diverting to IND. Finally, after about 30 min, we were cleared into a very wet, cloudy, and stormy ORD, but it was particularly smooth through the descent.

We went out for drinks, got home around midnight and woke up at 6AM and she went off to work and I headed for the blue line back to O'Hare.

Ugh, I am tired today! It takes about an hour from Downtown to O'Hare, then you have to walk for a LONG time before you reach the ticket counter. I had to get a boarding pass and was told I couldn't check in my luggage as I was too late, which was okay, because my bag was small enough to carry on, even though I knew they would check it at the gate, seeing as it was an EMB-145 to OKC. I walked all the way to gate B22 off in it's own little world of the United terminals (Very far) and went straight on the plane.

I finished "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" on this flight, and fell asleep and woke up on approach. My grandmother picked me up from the airport, and I got my dog and now I'm in bed with him sleeping at the foot of my bed!

Overall, great trip, bad service, but I never turn down a chance to fly!

Actually the 772s and the 77Es are all getting new seats and PTVs starting in August. They are switching to 3-3-3 seating and installing the same PTVs as F/J have on the newly configured 763/744.

Sorry you had so many issues with re-booking the flight but it sounds like you had a fairly decent flight in the end and hopefully enjoyed Europe.
I know the voices in my head aren't real but sometimes their ideas are just awesome!!!

It is temporarily operating BRU-DKR flights for Sn Brussels Airlines as one of their A330's is undergoing maintenance.

I had the pasta dish they served on the westbound flight which came with a baguette, salad, and green beans I believe, and we had a small sandwich, I believe it was ham and cheese with a Twix bar and some chips and mustard on the way back.

Yes, Lacey is very pretty, lots of fun....I grew up with her my entire childhood, and we dated back in the day, now just really good friends. Our families have known each other since they were kids as well, and my dad even dated her father when he was in high school. Oh how history repeats itself....sort of.

Interesting report - just too bad you couldn't take pictures in the cabin. Would have been nice to see some shots of the Economy Plus seating.

Yes, built in 06/1995. It was the fifth 777 for UA.

Great report & really nice pictures of Brussels! Looks like quite the bar with the high-heeled-shoed leg sticking out of the wall (!!) I tend to meet lots of crew at bars here in Toronto - just last weekend chatted with "Stu the Stew" who's with BA...

Umm, was this some kind of freudian slip?

Enjoyed the report! It kind of has a frantic last-minute feel to it! Sorry to hear about the camera trouble.

I went to BRU recently (and did a trip report) and noticed you and I have a many of the same pics, or at least very similar! Your hotel and your view were great!

Glad you at least liked the Economy Plus legroom and Channel 9 both ways as well. (I never get channel 9 when I fly UA. They see me coming and shut it off).

I agree with you. It's always fun to fly a 777, so I'm glad you enjoyed yourself and had a somewhat spontaneous trip to BRU!

It seems that BRU - IAD - BRU is a rather good route for UA, been on the same flight last month and the loadfactor was pretty high in both ways (IAD-BRU near 100%).

To bad we don't have to many direct flights from BRU to the US anymore...

It seems that BRU - IAD - BRU is a rather good route for UA, been on the same flight last month and the loadfactor was pretty high in both ways (IAD-BRU near 100%).

To bad we don't have to many direct flights from BRU to the US anymore...

Yeah, I'm not sure why UA has such a good route with this as I don't believe they have any Star Alliance members based here, but I was looking through their Star Alliance list in the in-flight magazine and it lists Jet Airways as a partner airline, though I don't think they are with Star Alliance. I know that AA and Jet Airways have a partnership in some way as well. Not sure how these work....

As for UA, perhaps they do well with it on the 777 because it is their ONLY flight to BRU from the US, while the other airlines have multiple flights from other cities like AA and DL, but I believe Continental only has one flight from EWR with the 767-400, which has a lot of capacity as well.

Jet Airways isn't connected with any alliance at this moment but has some agreements with other carriers (SN, AA, QF, EY, etc...) With Jet Airways it seems that United has only an agreement for their frequent flyer miles while customers from both airlines can earn miles on both carriers. But they don't codeshare flights.

Well, it is rather strange to me still, because at the moment, there is no Star Alliance hub by any means at BRU. I bet you see more flights once SN becomes part of Star.

Really, it seems as though Jet Airways is your predominant carrier there! LOL  Smile

It seems that you have quite the attractive friend over there in Chicago. Anyways, awesome report, I haven't read one involving BRU in a while and its interesting that so many of the UA 777's are in IAD. I would have thought that they'd all be in SFO or LAX or even DEN for long haul asian routes. Just a quick question, did you like the crj-700 better than the erj-145? Thanks for the great report

CRJ-700 is much better than the ERJ. CRJ has Economy Plus as well as "ExecPlus" which is semi first class. I was seated in the front of the aircraft, however, I noticed that when you go back to the lav in the rear, it gets quite loud. Not the case with the ERJ, it's much quieter in the back. There is indeed no Star Alliance hub in Brussels (yet). Maybe this will change after SN joing Star, but maybe this will change someday  Wink

AMS has his own carier (KLM) which is flying from and to several destinations in the US. Since the faillure of SABENA we don't have our own carier flying to and from the US anymore since SN is only flying from and to Africa. AA is upgrading their flight (AA88/89) from ORD to BRU and back next week into a 777-200ER and also Continental is upgrading their flight (CO 60/61) from EWR to BRU also in a 777-200ER. This means that 3 US cariers are flying with the 777 to BRU.

It seems that the 777 isn't overkill afterall for Belgium?  Wink

Don't know about AA and CO but it seems that the UA 777 has some pretty decent loadfactors on this route...

And yes, AA has always been present at BRU, If i'm not wrong they worked together with the old SABENA before they failled and started again with the new SN.

Jet Airways is indeed a prominend carier in BRU at least with widebody's, unfortunately they stopped operating the 777.

But Brussels is not that big of a city, and without and alliance there other than the cooperation with JET, I'm wondering what is giving these airlines all the premium traffic from the US to BRU that they use their most premium aircraft, seeing that AA and CO will be upgrading to a 777? If you know US aviation, you know that the 777 is usually reserved for VERY premium routes or long distance routes, ie, Asia for most airlines.

I don't know that much about Belgium, so if you could inform me, I'd appreciate it!  Smile

Don't forget to mention the 777s that do the DEN, LAX, ORD and (usually) SFO domestic runs.

Also earlier in the day there are 2 777s operating NRT and PEK.

@NRT: 777s fly SEA, SFO, HNL, and IAD. They also fly SIN, ICN, TPE.
BKK has switched back to a 747 from a 777. When UA flew NRT-HKG this was operated by both 747s and 777s, as was NRT-TPE.

747s do Intra-Asia from HKG: HKG-SIN and HKG-SGN.

There is probably a greater demand for premium cabins (more first and business) on FCO and BRU. Don't forget BRU is where the EU is head quartered... and therefore there is a demand for business and government traffic between Washington and Brussels.

I've been on UA950 a few times, but only on the ORD-IAD route, which seems to always be pretty full. I'm thinking about taking 950 all the way, with how cheap europe flights are right now.

At this moment only the UA777 is a permanent visitor to BRU. Both the AA777 and the CO777 are upgrades from this month on till ??? Don't know if they are staying for the winterseason but I guess they are at this point only upgrades for the summerseason.

Brussels is indeed not the largest city in the world nor Europe. It has "only" 1 million people living there but it is besides our capital also the capital of Europe. It houses the European Union, the NATO, SHAPE and several other organisations. We have also some specialised industries where we do have some (Global or European) HQ's located in Belgium.

I don't know about AA or CO but I know that UA has some pretty decent figures on the BRU connection with IAD. The fact that we have only connections to New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington and Toronto from BRU gives that they probably have some decent loadfactors.

So If I read your post correct we have to be flattered that we get those 777's in BRU? Actually I do prefer the good old Jumbo instead :lol: To bad that they aren't flying to BRU anymore (PAX version).

Well, flattered, I dunno, but lucky, yes. Many other European markets do not see the likes of ANY US based 777's. In fact, I think that other than MAD, FRA, and LHR, AA does not fly to any other European destination with the 777, and most of their 777's are allocated to LHR. The majority of the time, the only time you'll get a 777 exiting the US on a regular basis to destinations which do not require the range of the 777 are to LHR, and very few Latin American destinations. (Please note that I said these were routes which DO NOT require the range of the 777).

With about 250.000 flightmovements each year and arround 16 million passengers I wouldn't call BRU "dead". But yeah, when you compare it to an US airport it will probably look quite dead though  Wink

The original SN was unfortunately bankrupt back in 2001 due the bad management of main shareholder Swiss Airlines. And yes, back then SN had a nice fleet of long haul planes...

The new "SN" (Brussels Airlines) does only have 4 A330 flying to Africa and that's it... It's only a small part of the original SN...  Sad

Maybe it will change in the future, with LH becoming the owner of SN it's possible that additional long haul planes will join the fleet. But I think the main target for the fleet of SN will stay Africa...

Yesterday I saw a small van from the new SN outside BRU at the Brussels Airport building still wearing the full Sabena colors including the Sabena brand... One of the few vans that never was repainted and it was a beautifull sight  Smile

But those days never will come back...

Some additional long haul carriers would be nice to see at BRU, maybe in the very far future  Wink

The details for the winterseason are announced...

BRU - EWR by CO will be downgraded again to a B767-400
BRU - ORD by AA will remain a B777-200
BRU - IAD by UA will also remain a B777-200

Only the EWR route by CO will go down again to a B764 instead of a B772

BRU - PHL by US will remain a B752
BRU - ATL by DL will remain a B763
BRU - JFK by DL will remain a B752
BRU - JFK by AA will remain a B752

So back from 3 B772's to 2 B772's (which is one more then previous winter).  Wink
