POZ - FRA LH CityLine (pics)

Wed Apr 29, 2009 7:50 pm

Lufthansa has recently added Poznań to its destinations list, offering daily flights from Frankfurt. That means that LOT’s long lasting monopoly on this route has been finally broken.
Last weekend I took the opportunity to check out this new connection. I took advantage of the promotional fares offered by Lufthansa and decided to make a quick trip to FRA, only for leisure purposes.
Saturday, 25th April
Flight no. LH 3279 Operated by Lufthansa CityLine
Departure: 4.45 PM
Arrival: 6.05 PM (actual 5:50 PM)
Bombardier CRJ700,
D – ACPJ (Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz)
My first ever flight on this type of aircraft.

Seat: 9A
Load factor: ca. 25 pax (i.e. 35%).
POZ terminal was quite busy Saturday afternoon when I entered it beginning my short trip to FRA. The low cost carriers has completely dominated this airport and long lines were formed to Ryanair and Wizzair check – in counters, as there were flights to Stansted and Rome Fiumicino departing in next two hours. When finally passengers of these flights proceeded to the gates the terminal became deserted. I was the first one to check – in for my FRA flight. Then quickly went through security control and headed to the gate. Waiting area in POZ gives quite good opportunity to view the apron but since the mentioned no frills has departed there were hardly any action at the apron. I was lucky enough to spot Ryanair 738 EI-DYD just leaving to Stansted and to see my CRJ waiting patiently for its flight. As there was no incoming traffic until my departure I have killed my waiting time by reading.
When the boarding time finally came we were invited to the bus taking us for the exciting 1 minute  trip to our lonely CRJ, which turned to be D-ACPJ. I was desperately trying to be the last one to board as I am keen on this nice feeling when you are standing just at the aircraft and you can touch it. Waiting at the stairs I was lucky enough to see Augsburg Airways’ Dash – 8 arriving from MUC which has parked next to us.
Finally I boarded the plane being welcomed by the blond female F/A. The cockpit door were opened so I quickly asked the F/A for the permission to take a photo. She consulted the captain who did not mind it. So, I said hello, thanked for his permission, took my photo and lucky went to my seat.
There were another male F/A on our flight. The safety demo announced in German and English followed by the recorded Polish version. Finally we have been pushed back from the parking position, the engines went on and we have taxied via taxiway B towards the runway. We have taxied towards the end of it, then the aircraft performed the backtrack followed by the immediate full power set and take off. I was quite impressed by the powerful take off, which for me was more impressive than this in comparable EMB145.
Immediately after takeoff we made right turn heading west towards Berlin. When the “fasten your seat belts” signs went off the crew began the service. No passengers in the business class at this particular flight (the front rows were left empty) then seating in 9A I was served as one of the first. I was offered a snack (roll) having a choice between cheese or sausage one, as well as drinks (I took red wine and coffee).
The drink offer was repeated as the trolley returned once again in 10 or so minutes. The flight was smooth as the weather was spotless. After 30 minutes of flight the captain made its public address giving us some standard, brief, bilingual (German and English) information, informing us we were cruising over Leipzig (Lipsk in Polish) at that time.
Soon the descent started and finally we landed on runway 25L. I have immediately stuck my nose to the window trying to spot as many FRA activity as possible. We have taxied to the remote parking stand in the western part of the apron. The bus has been already waiting for us. I experienced FRA to be really hub airport when only 3 of my travel companions went to the baggage claim. The screens at the carousel indicated we shall be waiting 9 minutes for the bags, but I took just 2 minutes to deliver it. I was lucky as my bag came as the first ending my trip in very positive way.

And below are some pics taken during my visit @ FRA:

Yes, next day it was racing day at Sakhir track. Unfortunately Robert Kubica’s performance was mediocre …

That is all, thank you for reading it  Smile

Hey, Kuba74,

good to read your shorty story about the new FRA-POZ LH route.
Nice pics, the CRJ7 is also my favourite plane from this series.
D-ACPJ is also in my log from a STR-TXL leg.

Well, after LH changed the aircraft type on my KRK-FRA-STR in two weeks,
I´ve decided for LOT´s E70 on KRK-FRA.
Hopefully LO survives!.

Hi Kuba74,

Nice report of this short trip on LH. I really loved it!
How are you guys in Poland thinking of the expansion of LH in Poland?

Hi Kuba74,

nice and interesting TR. LH is my main carrier to fly with, because I live close to a regional airport (PAD) and LH Cityline is the only airline here, beside some charter airlines.

Nice pics from FRA as well. I like those special liveries such as SkyTeam or the "little Europe", which I have been on several times.

Thanks for sharing.

Great to read something about LH's POZ service! Now another triprep for the new RZE flight and I'd be happy!  Wink

What was the load like? Beeing served as one of the first in row 9 doesn't sound that promising.

I actually like those CR7s, just SO much better then the 100/200 series.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1):
I´ve decided for LOT´s E70 on KRK-FRA.

Good choice! Way better then Eurodings BAe's with 3+3 seating.
Always a tough decision which flight to take though, as when booking with LH ex KRK you mostly end up in the 750 Miles "U" booking class, which unfortunately books you into "W" on LOT flights.
So thats either a nice flight on LOT's 170s giving you just 125 miles or an EW BAe for the whole 750...

Wenn zwei sich streiten freut sich der dritte! (When two having an argument, the third is the lucky one) Next time I'm heading home they can both kiss my feet as Austrian will be the airline of choice.

Thank you all for kind words and comments.
Well, certainly, LH expansion in Poland will not make LOT's life easier. As I mentioned in my report LH has just broken LOT monopoly on POZ-FRA route. IMHO LOT will not be able to compete with LH, still serving this route with turboprop ATRs and offering not competitive prices. LOT has just also lost its dominant position in the other small, regional Polish airport - I mean Rzeszów/RZE/EPRZ (in southern Poland, ca. 100 km from Polish - Ukrainian border). LH, as the first ever foreign traditional carrier, offers now nonstop flights to FRA. Even though RZE is relatively small town it has huge potential as people from this part of Poland traditionally often seek employment abroad (especially in US and Canada).
We will see what the future will bring for LOT. I do hope however, it will survive.
